"Sustainable Development" was enshrined in the Brudtland Report and will be the focus of a major UN Conference on Environment and Development in June 1992. It is now widely accepted by environmentalists and development workers, as well as a growing number of economists, planners and policy-makers as the only sensible goal for both North and South. This book is an account of sustainable development, explaining what it is and why it matters, and describing its application to land use, deforestation, agriculture, human settlements, freshwater resources, energy, climate change, people and poverty. Its recommendations cover the economics of sustainable development, the empowerment of people for development and institutional change. It ends with a common North-South agenda. Lloyd Timberlake also wrote "Africa in Crisis" and "When the Bough Breaks: our Children, our Environment".
