For any girl growing up in the modern world, Little Women is a great read for understanding how far our social norms have advanced and for putting ones own childhood into a historical context. In creating her characters, Louisa May Alcott used many aspects from her own personality. The character of Jo is loosely based off of herself and is a tomboy in many respects. With the character of Jo, Alcott is able to explore feminist ideas as Jo encounters a series of barriers to her own life's desires to join the military and involve herself more in writing. Little Women is as much about the issues that girls face while growing up as it as about the problems women faced in the nineteenth century. When it was published, Little Women exploded onto the scene and grew rapidly in popularity. It wasn't long before people were coming to Alcott's house to discuss sequel opportunities and to inject their own two cents about what should happen to Little Women's popular characters. Little Women has also been adapted into many different forms that include plays, films, operas, musicals, and even anime. Its characters are very relatable to most young women and cover a spectrum so wide that they attract even the most casual of readers. The book is a historical journey to childhood in a time quite different from ours.
