29. Backache

Nowadays with Google etc., it's quite unusual not to find suitable artists' reference photos. Despite a lot of browsing the web and my own bookshelves I could not find a picture of a man in the above pose. So there was nothing for it but to photograph myself and insert me into my own sketch for my next wood engraving in the current series.
Digital composite 30cm x 20cm. Click to enlarge.

34. Triste Trieste

Over a period of two weeks in September 1983 in the Gulf of Trieste, a high biomass macroepifauna community suffered mass mortality. The Ragactis Pulchra sea anemones managed to survive the low oxygen levels, although they did appear somewhat stressed.

I designed this rather fetching hat to commemorate the event.
Pen and ink with watercolour. 23cm x 16cm. Click to enlarge.

38. The Drawing Club of London

I went on my first outing with the London Drawing Group yesterday. The location was a rather soggy Trafalgar Square and I worked from the shelter of the National Gallery portico. Our intrepid leader (shown above) actually managed to fit Nelson's Column onto the page, which is no mean feat. I'm afraid my scrappy little sketch was quite awful, but to be fair it's actually very difficult to draw perched on one leg whilst balancing a paintbox, sketchbook and water bottle in one hand, all the while trying to ignore the tourists peeking over my shoulder. I preferred drawing the people rushing about in the square and their reflections on the wet pavement.
Over lunch we discussed the merits of vodka as a painting medium, the shape of future teabags, and whether scepticism about cycle helmets is justified.
Pencil and watercolour approc 13cm x 11cm. Click to enlarge.

39. El Milagro de San Grillo

The mighty Oscar Grillo sent me this screenshot of the word verification pop-up that appeared whilst he was commenting on my Pen Island post. Is this a sign? Is Grillo the hidden Qutub?

44. Nimrud

Large stone sculptures and reliefs were a striking feature of the palaces and temples of ancient Assyria (modern northern Iraq). An entrance to the royal palace of King Ashurnasirpal II (883-859 BC) at Nimrud was flanked by two colossal winged human-headed lions. A gigantic standing lion stood at the entrance to the nearby Temple of Ishtar, the goddess of war. Painted in Room 6 at the British Museum, London. You need permission to use paints, but pencil is allowed without a permit.
Watercolour 18cm x 25.5cm. Click to enlarge.

48. Job's a good 'un

The Book of Job certainly makes for a fun holiday read....not.
My copy was the 1927 Westminster Press edition with the dreadful overrated William Blake engravings. These sketches were as far as I got in planning a new edition before giving up and having an ice cream instead.
Brushpen. Each page 21cm x 15cm. Click pics to enlarge.
