Hi Mark and Andrea, thanks SO much for the fun post about my book! I actually saw “Dr. Dave” recently at a library night. He is the same, sweet person I remember, and he told me he remembers me drawing on my patches! Only those patches were these icky band-aid-like patches that got all sweaty–so in the trash they went at the end of the day. They were more simple doodles–since I got the chance to relive it in my book, I made them a bit more elaborate.

Anyway, thanks so much. I really appreciate you sharing my story on your podcast, and inspiring us all with your ongoing reviews and interviews!

I’m so glad to hear about this book on JOMB! Illustration Friday did a fabulous interview with Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw a few weeks ago and my interest was piqued. I got my copy in the mail the same day JOMB did the review. So exciting! I love this book. I recommended it today to a parent of a child with a travelin’ eye. She was thrilled!

This is a great book! Sarah Ackerley is very talented as an artist and author. We had Sarah show her illustrations and read to kids at our gallery. The kids loved it! This was a few months ago and I still have parents telling me how much their kids love Patrick! Thank you Sarah for inspiring these kids…and Patrick, too! I’ll keep my eyes open for the new book…

I love you Stinky face is my favorite book to read to my son and has beenf or the past 2 years. He reaches for it every time I ask him to get a book to read. I now get it for all of my new mom friends. It’s a fun book, you can make lots of funny voices, and my son can now read along with me!

Thanks for posting about this book. I find the illustrations so beautiful. I researched a bit about her and she does amazing work. Her website is so alive, everything moves.. very cute :o)

I am so thrilled you reviewed this book, I read it years ago, for my own enjoyment, and soaked up the gorgeous illustrations for hours. It has inspired me to pick up the others in Niki Daly’s series!

After hearing this podcast I immediately ordered this children’s book. I love the message and values that it conveys, in addition to your take on the text and its illustrations. The idea of loving oneself regardless is an important message at any age. Validating yourself rather than waiting for others to validate your actions is a life long lesson with great importance. Celebrating independent thinkers is a rare topic for children’s books. This one does it with such grace and truly disrupts any notion of normality.

I listened to this podcast in a very timely manner. I was recently asked to analyze the story of Cinderella in one of my graduate classes. The thing that struck me the most was the idea that Cinderella relied on other people to bring her happiness. I think that this sends a very negative message to kids, especially young girls. It is refreshing to find a book about a girl who is an independent thinker and who can enjoy being herself for who she is. I love that Odd Velvet does not need other people to accept her in order to find happiness in her life. I have never read this book, but I certainly plan on seeking it out. Thank you for introducing this book to me!

I think this book looks critically at the social dimension in schools that can be hurtful to a student if they realize they are not treated the same as the other students. A lot of students can relate to Velvet, weather it is being just a little different or very different from other students. This book is helpful in classrooms where students are not too accepting of other students who live life in their own way. I think students who beat to their own drum will be affirmed by this book, and those students who are the social ring leaders maybe a little more appreciative of people and their differences.

Andrea and Mark (and Diane!), this is great! I love how she talks about the difficult, time-consuming side of illustrating. And that’s not only ’cause I love to read about illustration, but because a lot of people tend to simplify what illustrators do, as if they are surrounded by little, cute, pink children’s lit bunnies all the time and can whip up something fast. But, as she said, it takes a long time for one book, and you realy have to keep your enthusiasm up. I can only imagine.

Her blog IS great! I scanned it while listening. I love her July post about the creation of the snowflake.

And I see that she wrote this at her blog:

I agree. And I LOVE her blog too. It is so honest and concise and she only writes when she has something very interesting to share. I love that she captured and shared her just-received-my-new-book photos and excitement, for example.

For me, the beauty of a blog is the intimacy, but it seems many bloggers feel pressured to produce on a schedule and the intimacy (and, I think sometimes the honesty) gets fuzzy.

Diane seems like the real deal, eh?

Yes, she does. Now, can someone just add about five more hours to my days for great-blog-reading? :)

Thanks for this interview with Diane Greenseid. Her 2007 snowflake is colorful and detailed and really delightful. I’ve had the opportunity to see the snowflakes in person. I am also the lucky individual who won Diane’s snowflake “Bear Soup” in the Robert’s Snow 2005 auction.

Similar to what you said in the podcast, I find that Monkey Business (as well as Alphabeasts and especially Mixed Beasts) are very re-readable. My son, who’s 5, loves to look at the pictures over and over because they are so dense: they’re full of little jokes and wonderful imagery.

I loved the idea of a book about idioms! I teach first grade and I am continually backing myself into a corner with old-fashioned expressions that flow out of my mouth. How can I explain to my class what it means when they need to “hold their horses” and that this next assignment will be “a piece of cake.” This book seems like it will be the answer to my problem.

The clever illustrations that have intricate detail laced with humor are perfect for young children. They will be exposed to works of great artists and have fun “to boot!”

This book sounds and looks very colorful. When I here you say that there is a monkey on every page, It just makes me want to get this for my collection. The critical literacy on understanding idioms and making connections to the real world is quit a challenge. Also, the book sounds like some sort of puzzle, this would be a challenge for children to understand, why and where the monkey is located, and for what reason the author placed the monkey in that position. Thanks for the information, it’s most enlighting.

Sounds like a fun book, can’t wait to read it to the kids!

The discription of the book,makes me think I think of an exciting adventure.
I can relate this to “ME LLAMO CELIA ” which tells of the life of Celia Cruz.
This book is extremely colorful and exciting, with the bright yellows, burnt oranges, bright greens and purple pictures.
The books tells of her life in Cuba, where coffee, sunshine, bright moonlit nights, story telling, fresh fruit and birds of bright colours are talked about.
Bright colorful comstumes become a part of her career as a singer.
SUGAR: used as an idiom to a singer signifies a strong, smooth and sweet voice.
Children coming from an old school home environment, would understand most idioms used by their parents.
I look forward to reading Monkey business to my class.
I hope it comes in Spanish.

Thank you for sharing such an interesting and fun book. It seems to be a book that can be shared by children and adults together, enjoying the art, details, and humor. The English language is filled with expressions that literally make no sense, but have deeper meaning in a social context. It is important to be able to decipher the hidden meanings of these idioms and know when to use them in conversation. This book seems like a great way to expose children to this type of language. Furthermore, kids get excited about plays on language and I see “Monkey Business” as having the potential to get my students interested in reading, observing, and analyzing text.

This books seems to be very colorful as well as exciting. It looks like tons of fun for a child as well as for an adult and a child to enjoy together. As a third grade teacher I am always making references “using idioms” within the classroom that my students do not understand. This book can help apply the real world connections for my students that are not just auditory learners. This book is exactly what I can use to make the connection for my students that are visual learners. This book is one that I need to add to my reading library.

Even though I teach the 5th grade, they still struggle with understanding idioms. So thanks for sharing such a great picture rich story. It sounds like this book with help me clarify the idioms that I use in class along with the ones that we read in our text. I love the fact that this book draws students in visually, while also challenging students to loook beyond the words and explore the meaning of the text. The book also looks and sounds like something I might enjoy reading to my class leisurely. Once again, thanks for sharing.
