Literary superagent Bill Clegg labored over his debut novel Did You Ever Have a Family for seven years, unsure anyone would bid on or buy it.
As he told the New York Times, he’s secured mega-deals on behalf of other writers, but gauging reaction to his own novel was difficult.
\"It doesn’t make you any more confident — if anything, it makes you less confident. I represent great writers, and I couldn’t carry their glove on the field. When the bar is set that high, it’s daunting.\"
According to Alexandra Alter at the Times, four publishers bid on his book, and one–Gallery Books’ Jennifer Bergstrom–was so sold on it she offered a two-book deal. She also approached Carolyn Reidy, who is president and chief executive of Gallery’s parent company, Simon & Schuster, asking to create a new literary fiction imprint. Reidy agreed and Clegg’s will be the lead fall title for the imprint, Scout Press.
Bergstrom said, \"Because Bill’s book was the impetus for the imprint, it’s also the epitome of what we want to publish. It’s literary but very accessible, not precious, not fussy, not esoteric.\"
Clegg’s novel centers on a woman whose family was killed and home destroyed in an accidental explosion.
\"So much of my day job is occupying the ambitions of other people’s writing,\" Clegg told the Times. \"To just occupy my own feels almost brazenly selfish.\"
Simon & Schuster has made some changes to the rules for its library eBook program.
Henceforth, all the digital books from the publisher’s catalog (this includes both frontlist and backlist titles) will be made available to all libraries throughout the country. Prior to this, a library could only access these titles with participation in the “Buy It Not” merchandising program.
CEO Carolyn Reidy gave this statement in the press release: “Since we first began offering ebooks to libraries, we have been gratified by the enthusiastic response and valuable feedback we have received from our partners in the library community. We very much look forward to serving the broadest possible segment of the library community in order to bring our ebooks to their patrons, while at the same time we hope libraries will consider ‘Buy It Now’ as a new and viable option to generate revenue for the library and provide a service for their patrons.”

Simon & Schuster has established a partnership with Scribd and Oyster.
Readers will now have access to the publisher's backlist eBook titles. Some of the books now available through these two eBook subscription services include 11/22/63 by Stephen King, The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult, In Her Shoes by Jennifer Weiner, and How to be Compassionate by The Dalai Lama.
CEO Carolyn Reidy had this statement in the press release: "Consumers have clearly taken to subscription models for other media, and we expect that our participation in these services will encourage discovery of our books, grow the audience and expand our retail reach for our authors, and create new revenue streams under an author-friendly, advantageous business model for both author and publisher. We are delighted to work with Scribd and Oyster to offer this exciting new model for readers to find and read eBooks, and to do so in a manner that respects the value of our authors’ creative endeavors and supports our mutual goals of selling the most possible copies of their books."

Simon & Schuster has created a new website and daily email dedicated to book reviews called Off the Shelf.
The site will publish an original book review or essay about a book every day. The site will feature books that were published at least one year earlier. They must also be currently available for purchase in some format. The site will feature books from any publisher in fiction, nonfiction for both adult and young readers. Readers can sign up to receive the daily review as an email.
“With Off the Shelf, we aim to bring attention to books that were bestsellers you might have read or wanted to, books that you may have missed in the often overwhelming number of titles that get published every year, or simply books that have touched us as readers, left an indelible mark on us, and become friends that we revisit often,” explained Carolyn Reidy, President and CEO of Simon & Schuster, in a statement.
Simon & Schuster employees will be writing reviews, as well as occasional guest writers.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will write a new memoir for Simon & Schuster, a book focused on “key decisions and experiences as Secretary of State.” Publication is set for 2014.
Williams & Connolly attorney Robert B. Barnett negotiated the deal with publisher Carolyn Reidy. Jonathan Karp will edit the book for Simon & Schuster’s trade imprint. Here’s more about the book:
The yet-to-be titled book will use a number of dramatic moments during Secretary Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State to frame her thoughts about the recent history of U.S. foreign policy and the urgent, ongoing need for American leadership in a changing world. She will write about her role in, and reflections on, such recent events as the killing of Osama Bin Laden; the overthrow of the Qaddafi regime in Libya; the transitions in Iraq and Afghanistan; the Arab Spring; the pivot to the Asia-Pacific; the rise of new powers like China, Brazil, Turkey, and India; building diplomatic coalitions to deal with Iran and North Korea; and our relations with important allies around the world.

Simon & Schuster will now share piracy statistics with authors and agents.
The publisher has worked with Attributor since 2011, a company that searches millions of pages for pirated copies and sends takedown notices every day. Authors can report piracy by using the publisher’s Online Piracy Report Form to report piracy to Attributor. In a letter, Carolyn Reidy explained the new reports:
The reports that you will see provide information about the number of infringements identified and takedown notices sent to infringing sites, success rates in removing infringements, the types of sites where infringement is occurring, the specific urls and geographic distribution of sites where unauthorized copies are offered and more. (We expect that in the future we will expand upon the information currently available.) We have also provided a set of Frequently Asked Questions to increase your understanding of how piracy occurs and how we are combatting it. All the information we are providing is confidential and private, but please note that we are making the same information available to agents at the Simon & Schuster Agent Portal.
