2. Countdown to Christmas, day 24

So Kailana (The Written Word) and I are teaming up again...this time to celebrate CHRISTMAS. 25 days of answering questions! You are definitely welcome to join in on the fun!

A Christmas I'll never forget...

There are two or three Christmases that I'll never ever forget. But the most memorable would have to be last Christmas.

I spent twelve days in the hospital last December...including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. And while I had always hoped that it was true...
It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.
I found out it was completely, positively true. I could write hundreds of pages of testimony on God's goodness to me, and, I'm tempted, really tempted to try. But essentially being alive is enough of a gift. People take so much for granted, but perhaps nothing more for granted than the fact that they are still alive, still breathing. There is always, always, always a reason to be found to be thankful.

Day after Christmas traditions...

Honestly. Does staying at home count as tradition? I don't really do much shopping if I can help it. A decade or two ago it was different. I remember getting gift certificates and wanting to spend them right away! Or there was always one or two things that Santa forgot that I wanted to see if I could buy for myself. But now, not so much.

Did you ever try to sneak a peek at presents early? Are you a present shaker?!

I never snooped into where unwrapped presents might be. However, once it was wrapped...it was fair game. I am speaking, of course, of the past. You can tell a lot about what something is based on the shape and size. And the sound it makes--or does NOT make when you move it. A book, for example, you can always tell is a BOOK even if you don't know *which* book. I was an expert at spotting Barbie boxes.

When do you wrap presents? As you buy them or the very last minute? Do you love or hate wrapping presents?

We're terrible, terrible, terrible procrastinators at our house. Not just last-minute wrappers, but last-last-last second wrappers. As in lose-your-sanctification wrappers. As you might have guessed, no one at my house *likes* wrapping presents. The thinking being, well, if I don't do it now, maybe so-and-so will come and do it and I will get out of it. The problem? well, we are all thinking that.

Favorite present(s) from your growing up years...

I always loved getting $5 gift certificates to the local bookstore at the mall. (Long out of business sadly). Those were the days you could get 2 paperbacks for $5. I'm thinking the Babysitter's Club books and the Sunfire romance "name" books.

I also loved Barbies! And other dolls.

Favorite present(s) from recent years....

Last year I got a great tea mug that I use every single day :) And I've received Bibles in the past that get daily use as well. With some exceptions.

My friend gets me theatre tickets for Christmas to musical shows ;) I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE seeing musical theatre live ;)

A treat I love to make or eat during the holidays...

Here's where I have a choice. Do I share recipes for treats that I'll never again eat myself????? OR do I tell you that man does not live by bread alone and that fresh fruit is the greatest treat ever?! OR third option: TEA, TEA, MORE, TEA, EVEN MORE TEA.

My link to the best sugar cookie recipe ever. (Also some pictures of me when I was very, very, very young!)

My recipe post for Dr. Pepper Cake. (No pictures of me, but a great recipe)

My favorite holiday teas are: Candy Cane Lane and Sweet Harvest Pumpkin.

My personal favorite thing to eat year round is something I call "turkey goo." It uses ground turkey (93% lean or 99% lean, whatever), chopped onions, chopped red peppers, chopped celery, chopped mushrooms, chopped zucchini, plus a bunch of seasonings. Saute the vegetables in olive oil in a skillet, add the ground turkey (I do 1/4 package at a time), season liberally with onion powder, celery salt, garlic salt, chili powder, and cumin. Add 1/3 (ish) cup of diced canned tomatoes, 1/3 (ish) cup of canned tri-beans (or black beans or red beans or pinto beans or whatever bean-beans). You'll add those towards the very end of the cooking process. The beans are the carbs of the meal. You could choose your carbs to be something else. Like sometimes I bake some winter squash slices instead. It should be HOT and SPICY with no---Eew I'm eating ground turkey side effects.

18. Countdown to Christmas, day 3

So Kailana (The Written Word) and I are teaming up again...this time to celebrate CHRISTMAS. 25 days of answering questions! You are definitely welcome to join in on the fun!

Today's question: Where do you do your shopping? Online or in store? Do you love or hate shopping? Do you have a plan and stick to it?

A bit of both. I am not strictly one or the other. I have a hard time finding everything I want in the store. Sometimes the only option is online. That being said, I do love coming home with things to hide away.

I like shopping. I don't love, love, love it. I don't loathe it. It can certainly be frustrating and time-consuming!

I rarely have a plan. I have fuzzy, in-general ideas. I think somewhere between giving someone an exact, exact list and I saw this and thought of you is right way to go.

19. Countdown to Christmas, days 1 & 2

So Kailana (The Written Word) and I are teaming up again...this time to celebrate CHRISTMAS. 25 days of answering questions! You are definitely welcome to join in on the fun!

When do you begin listening to Christmas music or watching Christmas movies?

As soon as it starts getting cooler. Definitely in the first week or two of November. I am not one of those who have to wait until after Thanksgiving. There are too many albums, too many movies to try to fit into just three or four weeks.

Is there an album or movie you like to listen to or watch first?

Yes. The first album I listen to is BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD by Andrew Peterson. This is my "Silmarillion" album. It is such a great album I don't even think of it as HOLIDAY music. I could listen to it any day of any month. And I have. Trust me!

Because it isn't all Santa Claus is coming TOMORROW, it is one that warms you to the season at just the right pace.

As far as movies, I really love to watch Holiday Inn early on. It covers three Christmases and three New Years--plus the holidays in between. Plus it is one of my favorites, one that I'll gladly watch more than once a year.

21. 1st Day of Christmas - Katy Wyton, Writer Wrangler extraordinaire

A complaint (in verse) Writer Wrangler (N): someone who has voluntarily, or involuntarily, come into possession of a writer. Please remember that a Writer is for life, not just for Christmas. (Although if you put enough shiny baubles on the tree, it will distract them long enough for you to scoff all the mince pies.) On the First day of Christmas, my writer gave to me Another
