Nominations for the 44th ASIFA-Hollywood Annie Awards were announced this morning, and Disney’s Zootopia led the way with 11 nominations. Laika’s Kubo and the Two Strings was close behind with 10 nominations.

The leading performance by the Walt Disney Company comes one year after Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out scored a record-breaking 25 nominations and the Walt Disney Company won 75% of the categories in which it was eligible, sparking widespread complaints that the Annies do not accurately reflect the accomplishments of everyone who work in the animation industry.

Across its various divisions, the Walt Disney Company took 38 nominations this year. It’s a curious turn of events considering that the Walt Disney Company claimed that the Annie Awards voting was rigged and pressured ASIFA-Hollywood to overhaul the awards voting process just a few years ago. In 2010, Disney Animation and Pixar president Ed Catmull, along with John Lasseter, withdrew all of Disney’s productions from the Annie Awards in protest that Kung Fu Panda had won too many awards the previous year.

“We believe there is an issue with the way the Annies are judged, and have been seeking a mutually agreeable solution with the board,” Catmull told Variety at the time. “Although some initial steps have been taken, the board informed us that no further changes would be made to address our concerns.”

Catmull and Lasseter’s strong-arm tactic eventually led to the ouster of ASIFA-Hollywood’s president, Antran Manoogian, who was replaced by the duo of Frank Gladstone and (Cartoon Brew co-founder) Jerry Beck. An advisory committee of feature animation studios was formed, and numerous changes were made to the voting procedures to ensure that voters would judge categories on the merits of individual accomplishment rather than voting for a single popular film.

This year, three of the five nominees for best animated feature were Disney productions—Moana, Zootopia, and Finding Dory. Shockingly, Mark Osborne’s The Little Prince, which won France’s Cesar Award earlier this year for best animated feature, was locked out of nearly every category, garnering just two nods for production design and music. On a positive note, The Red Turtle picked up five nominations, and My Life As A Zucchini picked up thre.

On the shorts side, four of the ten films shortlisted by the Academy this year were also nominated for Annie Awards: Theodore Ushev’s Blinda Vaysha, Patrick Osborne’s Pearl, Alan Barillaro’s Piper, and Rob Valley’s Pear Cider and Cigarettes.

Cartoon Brew officially launched on March 15, 2004. A decade is a long time to be doing anything, but it feels like an especially long time to be blogging daily. As we head into the site's 10th anniversary year, here are some reflections on where we've been and where we're headed.

Time flies when your having fun – and this was fun.

Hard to believe it was almost nine years ago when Amid and I teamed up to create a daily blog devoted to bringing the animation community together with a smart source of news, commentary, gossip and ideas.

I’m quite proud of what we’ve got here. Cartoon Brew has ultimately morphed into the premier website for artists, animators, students and enthusiasts. Our readers have shaped this site as much (or more) as we have.

This is my final post on the Brew. I leave the site to my friend and colleague Amid Amidi to begin the next chapter in its ongoing evolution.

For those wondering where I’m going – I’m planning to continue doing what I’ve been doing: animation showings in L.A. (with plans to bring my act to New York as well), teaching cartoon history, consulting with Warner Home Video and continuing my efforts to get classic cartoons out of the vaults and onto your personal screens (on whatever device you prefer). I’m also committed to several new book projects, and have a few brand new ideas I’d like to pursue. I’ll also maintain a presence on the web, through my Facebook page and with my old site, CartoonResearch.com.

It has always been my ambition to work full time in the wacky, wonderful world of animation. My involvement with all of you through the Brew has fulfilled that goal – and then some.

Let me use this moment, right now, right here, to say ‘thank you’ to all the Cartoon Brew regulars who’ve been checking in with us all these years. To all the friends and strangers who read the site and tell me in person (at screenings and festivals, at Comic Con, at Ralph’s, El Pollo Loco, etc.) how much it means to you. It makes me feel great to know I’ve contributed something positive and meaningful to the community.

So to everyone, I’ll simply say “Stay TOONed”.

The best is yet to come.

The 2012 CTN Expo in Burbank California is next week – and I’ll be there. If you don’t see me somewhere me in October, you aren’t looking hard enough. I have an insane schedule of screenings, shows and public appearances (mainly in Southern California) coming up this month – here’s a pocket checklist of the ones I can think of off the top of my head:

October 4th Janet Klein – Yes, I still do this once a month. I haven’t plugged these in a long time because I haven’t had to – the shows regularly attract full houses. But for the record, the first Thursday of each month I open this program of live, late twenties/early 30s jazz music performed by Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys with a selection of classic short films and cartoons projected on 16mm film. It’s a blast. 8pm at the Steve Allen Theatre in Hollywood. Ticket info here.

October 7th Margaret Kerry – Next Sunday at 3pm I’ll be appearing at the Walt Disney’s Barn in Griffith Park to interview in person Margaret Kerry – she who was the original model for Tinkerbell, provided the live action lips for Clutch Cargo, Space Angel and Captain Fathom, and appeared in movies and TV with The Lone Ranger, The Three Stooges, Andy Griffith, Eddie Cantor and Our Gang. I can’t wait! This is part of the Once Upon A Classic Disney Collectors Club, but I think it’s open to the general public. Come!

October 19th LACMA – I’m curating and introducing a screening of surreal animated films at the Los Angeles Musum of Art on Wilshire Blvd. The program, Animating The Subconcious, is still being firmed up, but so far we can confirm 35mm prints of Disney’s Destino and Lullaby Land, Fleischer’s Snow White, Chuck Jones’ Duck Amuck and Emile Cohl’s Fantasmagorie. Tickets on sale now for this unique 7:30pm show. More info to come at LACMA’s website.

October 20th The San Diego Comic Fest – I’ll be heading down to this old fashioned Comic Book convention brought to you by some of the same folks who produced the original San Diego Comic-Con back in the ’70s. I’ll be presenting a tribute to Daffy Duck sometime on Saturday afternoon. The con is so small, it is limited to 1000 attendees, so get a ticket now. San Diego Comic Fest website for more details.

October 21st Classic Cartoons on TCM – The BIG night! Yours truly Jerry Beck will co-host with TCM’s Robert Osborne this unique program block – six hours total – which will include restored UPA cartoons, Max Fleischer’s two feature length films, a selection of silent era cartoons from the collection of Thomas Stathes and Lotte Reiniger’s 1926 masterpiece, The Adventures of Prince Achmed. October 22 – Cartoon Dump – Frank Conniff has announced his plans to move back to New York to write and perform on camera for John Fugelsang’s new show on Current TV. Will this be Frank’s last appearance at Cartoon Dump in LA? Come to the show and find out. One thing’s for certain – it’s going to be one one of the wildest live comedy events of the year – and yeah, we’ll be showing Mighty Mr. Titan and a bunch of crappy cartoons, too. 8pm at the Steve Allen Theatre in Hollywood.

October 26-28 – Platform International Animation Festival – The REDCAT theatre in downtown LA will be hosting this incredible three-day animation festival. Programming will include a Best of Annecy shorts program, an archival screening of films by stop-motion pioneer Ladislas Starewitch; a special advance presentation of Walt Disney Studios new short film Paperman, a special screening from PES and a very special guest (to be announced). October 29 – Halloween Spooktacular – I’m renewing my membership at The Cinefamily (aka The Silent Movie Theatre on Fairfax Ave in Hollywood), and starting things off my annual Halloween cartoon show featuring 16mm and 35mm prints of classic Hollywood cartoons with a spooky/scary/Halloween theme. Yes, I promise at least one Technicolor Casper The Friendly Ghost cartoon in 35mm with all its original titles… that oughta scare you… but beyond that… More info here.

Big news: ASIFA-Hollywood, the largest ASIFA chapter in the world, has chosen a new president and vice-president. Veteran artist and studio exec Frank Gladstone (above, left photo) will be taking over as president from Antran Manoogian who served in that role for over 20 years. The new vice-president is the world’s greatest Herman and Katnip expert (not to mention an editor of the site you’re reading right now) Jerry Beck. Congratulations to both Frank and Jerry!

The organization put out a press release today offering some clues about their new direction:

ASIFA-Hollywood has announced the selection of its new President, Frank Gladstone, at its February board meeting. Gladstone replaces Antran Manoogian who held the position for over 20 years.

Longtime ASIFA Hollywood vp [and TAG President Emeritus] Tom Sito chose not to run for re-election; taking his place is Jerry Beck. Also joining Gladstone as a new board officer is Jeff Wike as treasurer; Bill Turner returns as secretary.

“First and foremost, we owe Antran Manoogian an enormous amount of respect and admiration for his many years of selfless devotion to ASIFA-Hollywood,” says Gladstone. “Antran has seen the organization through a period of unparalleled growth and success, going from a small club to an organization of over 4000 members. During his stewardship, Antran established, among many achievements, a digital archive, and built the Annie Award into the most important honor in animation.”

Gladstone continued, “Though I’ve been part of ASIFA and the animation community for a long time, I am looking forward to being the ‘new face’ of the organization and to making some significant changes to the status quo. For starters, this includes updating our membership qualifications, establishing a representative voice for every animation studio and creative technique, building an advisory board of animation luminaries and revising the voting structure of the annual Annie Awards.”

In the next few weeks ASIFA-Hollywood will be holding meetings with executives from all the major studios to get their input on how we can improve our infrastructure. ASIFA-Hollywood will take this time to ask its members, both individual and corporate, to come together and advise them on how best to chart the course for decades to come. In addition they will invite many of its members to join the executive board.

Frank Gladstone has been a professional animator, producer, director, writer and teacher, first managing his own studio, and then working in management positions for Disney, Warner Bros. and DreamWorks, among others. He is currently the CEO of the animation consulting firm, Gladstone Film, teaches worldwide and is the ‘artist-in-residence’ for the ACME Network.

There’s a holiday weekend coming up – and as usual, I’ll be spending most of it in a darkened theatre – starting tonight!

I’ll start the long weekend by showing vintage 16mm musical films and cartoons to open the Janet Klein show tonight at the Steve Allen Theatre. Tonight’s show is a party to celebrate her new album, Whoopee Hey! Hey!. It’s gonna be good. It starts at 8pm. Tickets: here.

Beginning Friday I’ll spend four days watching 35mm prints of old movies, shorts, cartoons and trailers at the Egyptian Theatre, the home of the annual Cinecon. On Friday afternoon, at 2:30pm in a ballroom adjacent to the dealers rooms in the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel on Highland, I’ll take a break to sign my new book, The 100 Greatest Looney Tunes and show a few 16mm prints.

When the weekend is over, on Tuesday September 7th, I’ll be hosting my usual first-Tuesday-of-the-month animation screening at the CineFamily (at the Silent Movie Theatre). This month I’ll be running a marathon of Crazy Cartoon Commercials. Join me as we run two hours of vintage 1950s and 60s animated commercials (in 16mm and 35mm), featuring rare early commercials featuring Charlie Brown, Bugs Bunny, Casper and Woody Woodpecker, in ads created by the likes of Tex Avery, Stan Freberg, Friz Freleng and Chuck Jones.
