Hey there guys, Master Jedi Zack here once again. I know this book has been talked about a few times by CARLman (oops I almost wrote
CAROL, and that is a
GIRL'S,name nobody tell him!), but I just finished it myself and think it deserves another post. The book
Knucklehead: Tall Tales and Mostly True Stories of Growing up Scieszka by the original Guys Read Guy himself, Jon Scieszka, is awesome just plain awesome and really really funny.
Also, the
audio book version is coming to the library very soon, and it is read by the author. You really couldn't ask for much more. Actually, you do get more because the cat puke part of the book had me laugh so hard I feel over.
If you want to read the CARLman's original posts about this book and author, you can find them
here and
here.
Have I got a great book for you!!! It's
Knucklehead by Jon Scieszka (pronounced "fresca") He's one of the funniest writers out there, especially for guys. How'd he get to be so funny? By growing up as the second-oldest of six brothers, hiding in "foxholes" and throwing dirt-clod "grenades", and trying to name African babies after famous baseball players. And that's just part of it!! This book is really funny and quick to read--each "chapter" is only 2-3 pages long. And it's full of great old photos of him, his family, his models, and a broken collar bone that make it funnier and more real. A great book for guys, especially if you have brothers. (I don't)
AND I can tell you all how real this book is (even if the stories like
babysitting through tying the youngest brother to the bed with the father's ties might be hard to believe) because I grew up in the same time, read the same comics, and the story in Chapter17----it happened to
me!!!
Carl
PS--check out these two Jon Scieszka books:
Yeah, they're picture books, but they're funny--especially for guys!!
AND--The great and powerful CARLMAN wonders if Darth Bill is up to Master Jedi Zack's challenge!!

I finally took
Carol's advice and read this book. It's a quick read and I'm definitely going to have to keep a tight grip on it when I take it into my classroom. I need to hold onto it just long enough to do a mini lesson in writing workshop on leads, then I'm pretty sure at least five of my boys will be fighting over it, if the girl with three older brothers doesn't get to it first.
My favorite lead? "I learned how to cook because I like stirring oatmeal more than I like picking up poop."
My favorite story? Chapter 33 "Car Trip." Moral of the story? "Stick with your brothers. Stick up for your brothers. And if you every drop a pecan nut log in a car with your five brothers and the cat...you will probably stick to your brothers." (Good thing I was on one of those little puddle-jumper flights when I read this story and I had the single seat on the left side of the aisle because I was snorting and laughing out loud while I read.)
There are 38 two- to four-page chapters and lots of family photos and other assorted illustrations. If you need to find your favorite chapter or anecdote, there is an extensive index.
Don't delay a minute longer. Read this book. You could use a good laugh.
I'm interested in the list of reviewed books featured on your site..."If you want a list of all the books that have been reviewed on this blog, look at the link in the section above. The list can be printed."
However I couldn't find the link. Please explain where the link is again. LOVE your site. Great purpose.
Thanks for your help.
