1. Love, love, love the community of kids’ books!!!

Susanne Gervay's I AM JACK in Las VegasIt’s the start of 2014 & it’s drop in time before the crazy life of writing tours, events, festivals , school visits, media …. start seriously.

Where’s the drop in centre? You guessed it -The Hughenden.

I loved catching up with:-

-the award winning Albany (WA) Dianne Wolfer whose Lighthouse Girl (Fremantle Press) is a best seller!

- Monica Lizama the Chilean-Australian writer who dresses up as her character PAWS!

- Jennie Orchard with Margaret Wilcox from Room to Read who are developing the Writer Ambassador programme to raise awareness of the need to educate the kids of Asaa and Africa. SCBWI is on board with lots of our authors taking on the role of ambassadors.

- Libby Hathorn dropping in with her poetry books and she’s got a new book coming out with HarperCollins on ANZACS.

- Chris Cheng with Bini getting ready to head off to New York for the SCBWI Conference and then Bologna Book Fair  …. and other favourite creators!

Nearly ready to hit Las Vegas for the I AM JACK season at the Smith Center of performing Arts!

I’m staying at the EXCALIBUR HOTEL, so getting into princess gear … their could be some princes there. or toads!

3. No to School Bullying- from Oz to USA to the world

No to bullying BUS USA

Leaders across the world from politicians to pop stars have been bullied at school and are speaking out against it including -

Eminem

Lady Gaga

Tom Cruise

President Clinton

Kate Winslet.

Taylor Swift

Yeah to them.

Kids and communities are crossing the world with NO TO BULLYING.

(Thankyou Frane Lessac for the photos of the anti bullying bus in the USA.)

I’m madly working on my film script adapting my 3 JACK books into a script driven by NO to BULLYING.

I find it  emotional that my son being bullied has lead to:-

the book “I Am Jack; Super Jack and Always Jack

adaptation into a play by Monkey Baa Theatre

translations into languages from Slovenian to Korean

USA release by Kane Miller Books

speaking across Australia & internationally

and has become part of that new consciousness across the world that:-

everyone has the right to be safe

no one has the right to target another person

power abuse is a crime both personally & globally

Reaching kids at school can change culture.

Room to Read, The Alannah and Madeline Foundation. Life Education Australia, Courage to Care – all say NO to School Bullying and endorse I Am Jack.

4. Where’s Dr Frederick Harrison Quaife?

Greg Riley, the psychic who won THE ONE and who always stays at The Hughenden was on a mission to discover The Hughenden stories.

He found Dr Harrison Quaife who brought the first x-ray to the colony  and was a founding father of the British Medical Association and Astronomical Association in Australia.

The Morning Show on Channel 7 was filming Greg and the Australian Paranormal Phenomenon Investigator team as they investigated.

Fred (as the cheeky media personality Todd McKenny called him – Todd’s always a joker) – was much loved, like his father Barzillai Quaife – Australia’s first philosopher.

Fred and Barzillai both lived on Queen Street Woollahra in Sydney and influenced what Australia would become.

Barzillai Quaife wrote:-

‘Men may be foreigners but they are

men. They may be uncivilised but they

are yet men. They may be savages

but they still are men. One nation may

not oppress another. The natural rights

of man are universally the same ….” Barzillai Quaife 1872
