During our common planning time today, my colleagues and I brainstormed a list of texts we’re going to have students select from for their literary essays. Many people think that kids should pick whatever book they’re reading, I’ve come to believe that having children select from a pre-selected set of short texts is better. [...]

I've been tagged for the 8 Things meme by Christine M at The Simple & The Ordinary, Michele at Scholar's Blog, and Gail Gauthier at Original Content.
The rules:
Each player lists 8 facts/habits about themselves. The rules of the game are posted at the beginning before those facts/habits are listed. At the end of the post, the player then tags 8 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know that they have been tagged and asking them to read your blog.
Eight facts/ habits about me:
1. I met my best friend in 4th grade; I moved, we lost touch, and then we met again in High School.
2. I would love to hire a professional organizer. I'm staring at the clutter around my desk and the piles of books as I say this.
3. Being a book person, I have bought 3 books on organizing and de-cluttering.
4. I have not yet read any of those books; but I somehow believe that just by buying them, things will change.
5. The clutter remains.
6. I am leaving for BookExpo tomorrow. So you won't be hearing from me for a few days.
7. If you had asked me 20 years ago where I'd be today ... this would not be it. I've learned to embrace your future, question choices, be happy with the good things in life, and to work hard to get what you want. And I'm a little worried on the pressure put on teens to make life decisions when life is about change and growth and learning new things.
8. I adore genre TV. But, given the recent network betrayals (Nuts. Mars. 'nuff said), I think it's entirely possible that except for some guilty pleasures, my viewing for the coming year will be DVDs of TV series (old favorites, or shows I didn't watch but heard great things about). I just cannot invest in a show again to see "the suits" cancel.
Who to tag that hasn't been tagged?
Well, one way to get thru 8 is to tag rest of the Pop gang:
Sophie B.
Melissa
John
Sue
Hm, 4 more? I'll go with some real life friends
Chris
Nicki
2nd Gen Librarian

I've been tagged for a meme today. This one is the "8 Things Meme" and it comes to me from Kelly H over at Big A, little a. Here are the rules:
Each participant lists eight facts/habits about themselves. The rules of the game are posted at the beginning of the post, before those facts/habits are listed. At the end of the post, the player then tags eight people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know that they have been tagged and asking them to read your blog.
Eight things about me (anyone who's read this Blog lately - or my 100 Things About Me list - will probably know most of these already):
1 - I love "Doctor Who" - it's just about the most awesome TV show airing in the UK right now.
2 - I'm a huge fan of David Tennant (aside from the fact I think he's gorgeous - if a little bit too skinny!), he's the most charistmatic, mesmerising, engaging and compelling actor I've seen in recent years. His range and versatility are extensive, yet he remains refreshingly down-to-Earth.
3 - I got bitten by the fiction writing bug in January (thanks to aforementioned David Tennant and "Doctor Who"), and I'm now a total addict. I'm going to start a non-Who story in a couple of weeks time, once I've finished the current story-in-progress.
4 - I love to whistle, sing or hum along to music - it must drive people crazy but I rarely get moaned at for it !
5 - I absolutely adore Shakespeare.
6 - I once joined a newly formed Reading Group - and it folded two months later (cause and effect ? Hmmm...)
7 - I'm 40 next year - but in my head I'm still 21 !
8 - My favourite children's/YA authors are (in no particular order): Charles Butler, Diana Wynne Jones, Marcus Sedgwick, Rick Riordan, Philip Pullman, Susan Cooper, Linda Buckley-Archer and Terry Pratchett.
Now who am I going to tag ? Knowing my luck, everyone I want to tag has already been tagged - so if I double tag you, I apologise and don't feel you must do this again!
Sheila at Wands and Worlds
Lady_Shrapnell at So Many Books
Liz at A Chair, A Fireplace and a Tea Cozy
Elaine at Wild Rose Reader
Jules and Eisha at Seven Impossible Things (perhaps you could do one list each if you've been double tagged?)
Susan at Chicken Spaghetti
Nancy at Journey Woman
and Monica of Educating Alice.
Have fun at Book Expo! - and that thing with buying books and figuring that will solve the problem - I do that too - kind of - I got a book on learning Latin out of the library. Oddly, although I read the first 3 chapters before I had to return it, I still don't know Latin. Go figure.
I can't tell you how many books on autism I've bought, on that same theory.
"And I'm a little worried about the pressure put on teens to make life decisions when life is about change and growth and learning new things."
You said it. I happen to think kids have a good idea early on what makes them joyous and what kind of work might suit them in their adult years, but that just means it's a kindness to help them pursue their passions and try to figure out the best life for themselves. I love meeting adults who have put together lives that incorporate multiple talents--you know, those nuclear physicist/fly fishing instructors you meet. I think the days of picking one profession at age 18 are or should be over. There are too many interesting choices out there.
Hope you're having fun at BEA!
