When I was in Toronto for the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, I made sure to make a few stops at the Beguiling, the world-class comic store. There’s always something to find there that you won’t find anywhere else.
This adaptation of Pinocchio by French cartoonist Winshluss was one of these finds. In this modern retelling, Pinocchio turns from wooden toy into mechanized soldier, Monstro the whale is replaced by a toxic, giant mutated fish, and there’s even a subplot of a hard-boiled detective woven in.
With the exception of Jiminy Cricket’s segments, the entire book is pantomime. Jiminy’s appearances are indeed in French, but they are minimal, you can follow the book without understanding them, and it is unlikely the book will see an English translation.
Winshluss has perfected the wordless comic. Not a panel is wasted. Each is perfectly designed to for clear reading. It’s refreshing to spend time with a graphic novel that doesn’t rely on words and talking heads to advance the story.
You can see several preview pages at BD Gest. Here are a few:

Definitely the best French comic I've read in the past year. Basically, every page was mind blowing.
Steve : replace the “.com” in the adress bar by a “.fr”, you'll find it on the french version of Amazon.
