Despite the fact that most of the major streets are blocked and there are protests occurring in different parts of the country, by some amazaing miracle my complimentary copies of Caperucita Roja -Little Red Riding Hood- have arrived today!
The book turned out so lovely, I am really so pleased. It is published by Ediciones SM Spain and will be available March 5th. This book belongs to a series of books called -Cuentos De Ahora-
What a wonderful surprise to get these books at a moment like this.. Really made my day!
I'll post more about the making of this picture book and will show a little more of the inside illustrations soon. :o)
Hi there!
These are some of the prints I have for sale over at my Imagekind shop. The quality of their prints is really superb I have to say. I think these would look so cute in a baby or child's bedroom, don't you think? :o)
You can visit my shop here if you'd like to see more.
I worked on this little book a while back and found out that is now available!
It's a cute bath time board book featuring a bunny! I love drawing bunnies so I was thrilled when the people at Highlights asked if I wanted to create a bunny family for this book. I'll share a few pics of the inside once I receive my copies. :o)
This book is part of a set published by Highlights for Children and it's along the lines of their new Hello Magazine for little ones. You can learn more about these books and order some if you like by clicking here.
My quick #Twoodle for this week using the words
My 5 minute warm up #Twoodle of the week.
I love fairies, don't you?
They are of course magical, but also I think they really touch that inner child in all of us.
I will be using some of these fairies on our PBJunkies promo postcard which we'll be sending out soon.
Maybe they will sprinkle some of their fairy dust and find me some lovely fairy books to work on! :o)
Hello!
I am participating in a global blog tour to bring awareness to authors and illustrators about their books. A big thanks to the talented Maggie Smith for asking me to participate!
To answer these questions-
What is the working title of your latest book?
The lastest book that I can talk about because it has already been released is Un Beso Antes De Dormir. Spanish for, A Kiss Before Bedtime.
Where did the idea come from for the book?
I really only illustrated this book. Teresa Tellechea, the writer who is also the editor, was the one who came up with the idea.
What genre does your book fall under?
Board book.
What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?
That’s an interesting question! This book features babies kissing their mommies before going to sleep, so it would be lovely to have actresses playing themselves along with their babies. Since this board book has animals of all kinds living in their environments I would love for the actresses to be from all over the globe, in their native homes with their babies.
Juliette Binoche (France), Salma Hayek (Mexico) and Meryl Streep (US) come to mind.
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
All kinds of baby animals gently kiss their mommies goodnight.
Who is publishing your book?
Ediciones SM. First Spain then Mexico.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?
Teresa was in charge of that but I will answer this in the point of view of the illustrator. I took me about 2 weeks to roughly sketch these 10 spreads plus the cover.
What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
There are a large selection of goodnight books like Goodnight Moon, Goodnight Baby, to name a few.
Who or what inspired you to write this book?
What inspired me to illustrate this was the fact that I’m a mom and the strong love and affection I feel for my kids. I’ve mentioned this before, I feel I wouldn’t illustrate the way I do, If I didn’t have children. Being a mom changed me to what I am today. This may sound a bit of an exaggeration to some, but seriously, I think the way I draw kids, babies (human or animals) and their parents are a reflection of how I feel.
What else about the book might pique the reader's interest?
Well, here is a little secret.. I’m not sure I should say this but I know my editor Teresa wont mind, she is a sweetheart plus has complete trust in me for which I am forever grateful.
There is a tiny, little detail in one of the pages of the book that was drawn by my 11 year old daughter. She was thrilled to see the book come out with her own little illustration in it and I was even more delighted to see her face light up the first time she saw a printed copy. :o)
This is my first #Twoodle! :o)
A quick little sketch I created using the words Carrot and Kiss, suggested by my lovely friends @johnlechner and@juanamartinez.
If you want to know more about #Twoodle and how you can participate too, click here.
This was fun, looking forward to next Wednesday!
What's a Twoodle you ask?
Well, that's a very good question indeed!
Just came to me today while working on some new book ideas and tweeting silly things at the same time. I do that from time to time. To tweet silly things I mean. ;o)
So I decided to create this hash-tag #Twoodle which stands for Twitter + Doodle and during the week peeps from all over can tweet a word out of the blue, any word actually, and tweet it with the hash-tag included. Then on wednesday you check the hash-tags and choose TWO unrelated words and make a sketch that makes sense from those words. You post it on your blog and tweet about it. I will also name the twitter peeps who suggested those words on my post.
Why two words instead of one? Well I thought it would be a challenge to take two unrelated words and merge them together with art resulting in something that makes sense.
It's easy right? You play when and if you feel like it.
I think it's a nice way to get us warming up for work and can help spark ideas for books too. You never know!
There are some words already up on Twitter, so if you want to participate for next wednesday you can start checking out the words during the week. I'm @aliciapadron if you want to follow me and remember the hash-tag is #Twoodle.
Happy creating!
I was thinking the other day about how ideas come to us. It is always at the weirdest places and strangest times, isn't it?
Why do you think that is? Maybe is because we cant "force" our creative minds at times or perhaps is because there is so much stuff on our minds from our daily lives (grocery shopping, cleaning, cooking, paying bills, kids' after school activities, to do lists..) that all that noise just doesn't let us hear our ideas clearly.
I started to do Yoga everyday now. It's been wonderful so far. One of the hardest things I've done, ever... but very rewarding. In Yoga, my teacher says at the end during relaxation time that we have to let the mind free of thoughts and to not let it wonder. She asks us to concentrate on all of our worked out and stretched muscles that are now relaxed and to go deep into our breathing. This is a lot more difficult that one could think, clearing the mind.
But I believe that doing yoga and doing what I call "auto pilot stuff", which are activities that you do without thinking that you are doing them, like driving, doing the dishes or walking your dog, can take you to the same creative place. I get most of my ideas while driving the kids to and from school. When I reach home I have no idea how the heck I got there, which if you think about it, is extremely worrisome, LOL! My mind just wonders far away. I can't help it.
I truly think this is good for us, specially if you are in the creative field. If you draw, paint or write it is vital to let your mind go. To not work so hard at accomplishing something but to instead, have faith that the answer will come to you if you are brave enough to let it go for a while. Maybe is just me but I really believe this is the way to go. :o)
This is a little warm up sketch I did earlier this morning on this week's Illustration Friday's topic wheel.
I'm sure most of you artists out there are familiar with Illustration Friday. If you are not, make sure you check it out. It's a great way to keep your creative juices flowing, helps you come up with wonderful portfolio pieces, connects you with other artists around the world, gives you exposure and can even spark an idea for a book!
So what are you waiting for? Click here to learn more. :o)

Doxie on the go
I was thinking the other day about how ideas come to us.
