When Janessa Blythe discovered through a college leadership course that kids in her Waco, Texas community didn’t have access to books, she decided to act.
The junior at Baylor University is launching Waco Up & Read, a program that provides books for kids from low-income communities. “It appalled me that kids didn’t have access to stories and didn’t have access to books in general,” says Janessa, “that sent me on a little bit of a journey — what can I do about this?”
Janessa’s book drive provided each kid at Restoration Haven, a Waco community support organization, with eight books to call their own. For many, those books make up their entire home libraries. Working with Restoration Haven, Janessa is planning to provide more books through a pilot program, and establish Waco Up & Read as a nonprofit.
Her plans are ambitious, but Janessa understands the kind of impact that books can have.
“Stories teach kids that when hard times come, or you hit a brick wall in life, that you can break through – that is a major matter you see in good stories.”
And exposing kids to good stories is important to Waco Up & Read. Janessa plans to use the First Book Marketplace to give kids access to rich and varied content.
“Obviously that includes classic children’s books, but in general I’m looking for books that teach virtue, teach empathy, that teach human issues.”
To do that though, Janessa will need to raise money for Waco Up & Read. One way she is doing that is through First Book campaigns, which makes the fundraising process simple and easy.
All across the country kids in need lack access to books and stories, but the kids in Waco communities have a champion in Janessa. Book drives, fundraising, and eventually a nonprofit organization – that can seem like a lot for a college student but it’s as simple as identifying a need, and meeting it.
And that is something we are all capable of.
If you serve kids in need, please visit the First Book Marketplace to explore our variety of educational resources. To raise money and make an impact in your community, start a First Book campaign to provide books to kids in need.
Margaret at the blog Throwing Chanclas recently shared the plight of a school in her neighborhood:
The local junior/senior high school has not been able to purchase new books since the 90s. Some of the "check outs" for old books are in the 1980s. There are no books by people of color in the library. Hardly any books by women are in the few book cases except your standard Austen and Lee. It's an uninviting place. There hasn't been a librarian for nearly a decade. And volunteers weren't allowed. The last eight years students couldn't even check out books.
But all that is changing now.
Margaret is now collecting books for the library. Let's help out! You can donate books via their Amazon wishlist or by sending books directly to the address below. For more informaion, please email Margaret and visit her blog.

If sending during the month of July, when school is closed, please send to:

In celebration of Literacy, I'm chatting about a cause near and dear to my heart...
Numerous studies from both government and the private sector provide clear evidence that early reading skills are an investment in a child's future. Early reading skill development dramatically affects the quality of life for children as they grow into adulthood. Sadly, a recent article by Carole Dickerson on the Journal Standard website quoted a local social worker who stated that many of the parents in the homes she visits do not own a single children's book.
This is quite shocking to me and in response, I am announcing a children's book drive within my county to support the Rockland County Department of Social Services. I encourage other authors of children's books to do the same or if you have gentle used children's books to please donate to the book drive. I invite those interested in donating to contact me directly at [email protected].
In my opinion, "the bare essence of learning to read opens up the world of exploration to a child. Across the curriculum it is imperative children grow in their reading capability so success in their classes can be had. Without the fundamentals it is very difficult to progress successfully."
"I believe in ‘paying it forward.' That one book donation may be all it takes to make a difference in a child’s life. By encouraging the love of reading in our young muses their look of wonder as they bubble with excitement on their next reading journey swells my heart."
I urge you to join me in my quest to ignite curiosity in children through reading by donating to the Rockland County Department of Social Services book drive.

In this case, BYOB stands for “bring your own, outrageous, outstanding, overflowing books.” Four meet-ups will take place on April 23rd (the same night as this year’s United Kingdom edition of World Book Night) in Chicago, Richmond, Washington, and New York City.
Here’s more from the announcement: “While we can’t provide multiple copies of favorite books to givers, we figure that if you’re anything like us you’ve got mountains of beloved books at home that you’re more than willing to share with others. So set aside some to donate, swap favorites and stories with fellow participants, and help the HPA’s Accio Books campaign reach this year’s goal of 60,000 books collected. With our powers combined!”

Award winning author Dallas Woodburn has created and has maintained a yearly holiday book drive for underprivileged children and YOU CAN HELP!
It’s the 10th annual holiday book drive to benefit underprivileged children! through Write On!
Last year Write On! For Literacy collected nearly 1,000 books (bringing our grand total to more than 12,000 books!) that were distributed to various schools and charities including the Boys & Girls Club, Casa Pacifica, and Project Understanding. Please do your part to help children have a better holiday season. Help beat illiteracy and give the gift that lasts forever: the gift of reading!
Make a difference and give the gift that keeps giving.
A special quick post to say - hope you and your children have a great start to the new school year! As we are all so busy, I especially appreciate you continuing to follow this blog, even as it is often less frequent and regular than I would like. Hopefully late this fall, I'll have a breather and can set a better habit. Please continue to "tune in".
A few new resources:
check out Wonderpolois, the National Center for Family Literacy's great new conversation starter for parents and kids alike. Each day a new short, fun video is posted with something new and interesting to learn.
next, visit your local United Way to find opportunities for you and your child to get involved in volunteering for literacy. Maybe a book drive, maybe tutoring, maybe replenishing a school library, there's always a lot to do and your children learn the important lesson of sharing through one of the most trusted names in nonprofits today. Also check out your chance to brag on a favorite teacher.
Finally, give that teacher a powerful link to a new community just created for them: The Community at Educationworld.com. They can create a profile, join groups (including mine under subjects, language arts K-12), view resources and videos, download lesson plans, read articles from education experts and more. Thanks for sharing.
I'll be back soon with more resources just for PARENTS AND KIDS READING TOGETHER.

Thanks for pointing readers toward Wonderopolis, Cathy!
TIME Magazine just named Wonderopolis® one of its 50 Best Websites of 2011. Divided into 10 categories, the list includes Wonderopolis as one of five websites in the Family & Kids category.
TIME touted the daily Wonders of the Day® as fun learning for children and adults alike. “The daily articles at the National Center for Family Literacy’s Wonderopolis are allegedly educational and supposedly aimed at kids. Don’t let that fool you. They’re just plain interesting, and make for addictive reading even for those of us who are, in theory, all grown up,” the review states.
We are honored to be included on this list and thrilled to share that honor with sites owned by such respected organizations as Google, ESPN, Yale and HBO.
We hope your readers check out Wonderopolis.org, as well as our Facebook page and Twitter feeds. Thanks for helping to support parents and children in a lifelong love of learning!
You are welcome, Duane! I hope you'll come back and visit. Through my work at United Way of Madison County, I applied for one of your mini-grants for them - to aid an early childhood program starting up in october. Here's hoping!
This summer, Joey McIntyre, a member of New Kids on the Block, teamed up with First Book to provide new books to children in need at every stop of NKOTB’s North American tour.
The Let’s Get This Foundation teamed up with First Book to host a new book drive in each city on the tour. Joey encouraged fans to bring new children’s books to be donated to an organization in the next community on the stop, as well as encouraged them to make a donation to First Book at www.firstbook.org/letsgetthis. As a thank you for their donation, fans received a free download of Joey’s latest song, Five Brothers and Million Sisters.
At the tour’s conclusion, more than 25,000 books and nearly $30,000 were donated! Thanks to everyone who participated in the book drive and make so many new books possible for kids in need across the country! Be sure to watch the thank you message from Joey and his adorable son Griffin below.

Guest Blogger Susan Lawton is the Director of Children & Youth Initiatives at the United Way of Tampa Bay, a First Book Recipient Group.
In 2006 United Way of Tampa Bay chose a children’s book drive to call attention to the issue of early literacy in our community. Since that time we have collected nearly 300,000 books. The best of the books are given to children to take home because we know the number of children’s books in a home is often an indication of the levels of poverty, health literacy, and education in that household. These factors affect whether or not children and youth achieve their potential, our ultimate goal.
For the last 3 years we have been fortunate to have a Magical Wizard of Book Doubling. Our corporate partner, Psychological Assessment Resources (PAR), has offered to match all donations made during the first week of the drive to a maximum of $10,000. Their sponsorship is critical to the success to our virtual book drive because it builds excitement and even competition between teams and workplaces.
United Way of Tampa Bay’s partnership with First Book allows us to utilize the most efficient and cost effective methods to get quality books to these children in a way that engages our workplace donors. Each year the First Book team works with me to utilize new ways to invite greater participation. In 2008 alone, we distributed new books worth over $110,000. That’s a return on investment of over 600% for our donors.
Learn more about how you can participate and help United Way of Tampa Bay reach their goal.
ColorOnline has an appeal running this month for the library she runs at a non-profit organisation in Detroit, Michigan called Alternatives for Girls. Second. If you are living in Canada, more specificly Ontario, there is a Book Drive for Aboriginal Youth happening until the 21st of June which is collecting books to send to isolated communities in Canada's north. Here is the description from the original post:
If you live in Ontario, or want to (quickly!) send some books to a good cause,
the Lieutenant Governor of the province is doing his annual drive for new books
for kids living in remote First Nations communities. These are generally small,
isolated communities located deep in the northern boreal wilderness. Most have a
population under 1000 and are accessible only by aircraft. Kids in these
communities often have access to only old books in bad condition, so our
province's Lieutenant Governor launched this annual effort several years ago to
refresh community libraries with up-to-date titles.
The deadline, June 21, is only a few days away, unfortunately. If someone
from outside Ontario REALLY wants to help out, feel free to get hold of me
directly at [email protected] and you can make arrangements to send a book or two to
me, and I'll get it into the donation stream. But for those of you who live in
Ontario, or nearby (I'm lookin' at you, folks in northern New York, Michigan,
Minnesota, etc.!) this is a great chance to get some new reading material into
the hands of kids who really, really need it.
Here’s some nice news from the industry — mixed with some bad. Borders reported a $185 million loss for its 2008 fiscal year, which ended Jan. 31 — that’s not the good news — but the chain has plans and among them is giving more floorspace to children’s books. Now, that’s good news. Even better, is that the reason Borders is expanding its children’s book selection is that the category is performing above others. Sales have been growing. That is even better news.
Now, I don’t know if this is related, but Borders is supporting that decision with another program: The chain will promote summer reading for kids through a book drive. Customers at Borders and Waldenbooks stores will be asked to buy books that will be donated to non-profit organizations across the nation, including Lighthouse Rescue Mission, Boys and Girls Clubs and libraries.
This program is good on a number of levels: Borders gets the revenue, most likely a little extra than customers had planned to spend, which will keep the chain in business selling our books. Kids all over the nation will get access to books they might not otherwise be able to see. And the publishing industry will get new readers, who will hopefully continue to enjoy books for the rest of their lives.
So, go to Borders, buy something for yourself and your friends and family, and while you’re there, don’t wait for them to ask if you’d like to donate a book, choose one and give it to them. If you get in there before the program has started, buy the book anyway and donate it to a local charity. You’ll be thanked in so many ways.

We’re coordinating a children’s book drive as part of the Podcasters Across Borders 2007 conference taking place in Kingston, Ontario (Canada), June 22-24, 2007. If you’re attending PAB2007, here’s what to do:
Buy a brand new copy of one of your favourite children’s books
Bring that book to PAB2007
Drop the book off in the book collection bin at the conference
Feel great that you are helping a school turn children on to reading
All books collected will be donated to Central Public School in Kingston, ON.
As an added bonus, you can qualify to win an author-autographed children’s book of your own. Submit a two-minute audio review about the book that you are donating and what makes it one of your favourites to the Just One More Book!! podcast. Your name will be entered in to a draw.
If you have questions about the book drive, email Andrea.
Do you have piles of books cluttering your house? Books you've read, but won't read again any time soon? Then consider Colleen's call for help over at Chasing Ray.
This bookdrive is a perfect opportunity for me, for example. I have a home for my picture books and MGs (the ones my children don't squirrel away), but did not have a place for the YAs I've read and reviewed. Now I do!
