As all my blog followers know, I am a huge fan of the SCBWI and highly recommend children’s authors and illustrators to join and become involved in this society. I apply for and follow keenly their awards, and just as … Continue reading

So, weeks ago, entling no. 1 started to alert me and her sister to the newly released pics from New Moon--the movie but she stopped as she remembered, "oh, snap, they don't care."
It is really so sad, a house divided. Twilight fans/Not Twilight fans. (entling no. 2 has not weighed in, yet.)
entling no. 3 and I rejoice in the success, fandom and enthusiasm for the Twilight books. I adore them for their contribution to my "it is never too late to become a reader" mantra.
entling no. 3 actually liked the movie and uttered the equivalent of heresy in this house, "I think I will just see the movies and not read the books." Alas.
We tried, REALLY tried to be part of the party BUT it turned out that both of us got to the "sparkle in the forest clearing" part and had to stop reading. I did eventually finish the book but the entling couldn't push her eyeballs one page further.
From unscientific data, gleaned from random conversations, it would appear that, the "sparkle" scene is a make-or-break point for readers. If you sail through that scene you will be a Twilight fan. If not, not.
Reading Meg Cabot's arch take on Publix birthday cakes and her ponders about Twilight cakes sent me a-googling.
For all the fans who got through the sparkle, have your cake...here and here.
Cake Wrecks currently tops my list of humor blogs. If I am ever lacking a smile, I know I can find one over there. While six days a week the blog focuses on decorating disasters of various flavors, Sundays are reserved for truly beautiful, amazing cakes.
This Sunday, the theme is cakes inspired by children's books. The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Where the Wild Things Are, Good Night, Moon... My favorite, however, is this one inspired by The Poky Little Puppy:
Yes, I'd like that sweet little puppy to go roly-poly, pell-mell, tumble-bumble into my mouth, please... when I'm finished admiring all the clever details.
My own mother was quite the cake decorator back in the day, and my first two birthday cakes were both inspired by children's books, too. I don't seem to have a photo of the Jemima Puddle-Duck cake, but here's Raggedy Ann and me on my first birthday:
It's a tradition at the house to have a Very Special Cake for each of the boys' birthdays ever since their very first bd. Even if we had no Party at all and only sang 'Happy BD' the special cake couldn't be missed.
So... here are the sketches, illos and pics for the BD Party # 5 of my oldest. BD was last February and since then have had no time to post. Until now.
As I always do, I started designing the characters for the invitation. Then I laid out the card and continued with the design of cake. Christy from Vanlatte Custom Cakes in Mesa helped me again.
PLUG - If you ever need a baker that absolutely rocks in the Valley, you have to call her. She also helped me sculpting the cake # 3 for my youngest that I posted a year or so back. You can see those posts here and here.
Hope you enjoy them!
This sketch is a preliminary study for something I am working on. The finished illustration will be a bit different, but I posted this just to say that it made me so hungry I have to go bake a cake.
I have been watching the FOOD network challenges and the cake challenges are the most amazing!
I've collected toys since I was a little girl. Here are some that live around my studio. Some come with me all the way from Peru. Some I got from my trips. Some I stole from my boys *nodding*
Ameila and her grandma spent the whole morning creating sugary pettifours. They were having a lot of company for a special luncheon.
Check out what this girl does for us. I send the sketches and illustrations and she makes them in fondant. She's an artist!

This is the front and back sides of my NEW promotional postcard that I'll be sending out for the month of April.
Illustration Friday: Multiple
Yay! I got to take part this week and do something new. Here it is, the best kind of multiple choice....
luggage tag, collage, acrylic and ink
As a freelancer it's not uncommon for my clients to have "A change of plans."
This image was one of a set of 6 created for a collection of pet treat boxes. 3 for cat treats and 3 for dog treats. They were to be round like hat boxes. This is my favorite one of the cats. It's for the top of the lid.
The client changed their plans and went with a different format altogether.
If you would like to see more of them they're posted on my web site at...

I read book one. I saw the movie. I feel somewhat left out that I have yet to read the rest of the series. That said, I also feel there are too many other books before the rest of the series.
AHAHAHA! Cake number 2 from that first link looks like it has a red dildo lurking on it - I'm sure it was supposed to be a pawn, but, um, well . . . AHAHAHA!
I needed a good laugh today. Phew.
Wow--some of those cakes are really impressive! I tried making The Hungry Catepillar cake after reading this post on Cake Wrecks (http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/2009/05/sunday-sweets-reading-rocks.html) but it turned out quite scary looking and no one would eat it.
Well, I liked Twilight but some of the Twilight cakes are so awesome.
cakes aside, enjoyed the twilight series, amused by all the 'fervor' . had to read it so I could advise parents that it was "ok" type vampires, ...found the last book a bit "much" in parts, but it fit w/the rest :)
now there is movie madness, and endless holds put on all our books here, which is what movies SHOULD do!
