Today I have for you part one of a two part conversation with Heather Jopling author of wonderful books on same sex parents and alternative lifestyles, specifically Ryan’s Mom is Tall, Monicka’s Papa is Tall, and The Not-So-Only Child. Today my conversation with Heather focuses on the story behind the children’s books she has written [...]
Vivian,
This show left me feeling sad. The thought that anyone, let alone an educator, would believe that children were too young to be introduced to the idea of non-traditional families is so hard for me to believe or understand and it is just such a disheartening reflection on whichever society you were talking about (maybe even my own society — I guess I’ve never asked…).
It seems to me that the only way a child might be confused about the idea of two women having a family or two men having a family would be if the child understood the mechanics behind reproduction. But something tells me that a 3 or 5 year old that is “too young” to be introduced to the ideas of same-sex couples or non-traditional families is going to have a good long wait til they discover they weren’t grown in a cabbage patch.
On a lighter note, I can’t imagine that you haven’t seen this Rick Mercer skit, but if you haven’t you’re in for a treat. It’s not super high tech so you have to choose your video player before viewing it and I can’t send you the exact link so you have to search for and click on “I Believe in a Traditional Family”

Thanks for another great episode of CLIP,
Andrea
I can’t help adding this link too, since I just stumbled across it:

“Proponents of same-sex marriage have introduced a ballot measure that would require heterosexual couples to have a child within three years or have their marriages annulled….”
Ha!
Andrea
Hi Andrea,
Thank you for you very thoughtful comments! I too am saddened to think of lack of access to issues and topics such as non-traditional families. We’ve come a long way but we clearly still have a long way to go. I think this is why it’s especially important for us to do what we can to support the work of such people as Heather J.
The Mercer Report video is very funny and really gets at the ridiculousness regarding non-traditional families that we often hear about. The Time article does the same work. Very clever. How do you find these texts? Awesome stuff.
Thanks so much Andrea!
