1. A Christmas Journey Home by Kathi Macias

A Christmas Journey Home:  Miracle In The Manger is a Christian Fiction.

Isabella Alcantara and her husband Francisco are newly wed and expecting their first child when Isabella's family are killed by banditos and they are encouraged to sneak across the Mexican border to escape the indecencies happening to the Mexican people by her own kind.  Her Abeulo, has given his life savings to them in order to hire a "coyote" to take them across into America where he believes they can have a chance at a better life for their baby.

Carolyn Sinclair, her daughter Miriam and grandson Davey are in mourning over the loss of Miriam's husband, David, a border patrol officer who was killed in the line of duty.  Miriam hates illegal aliens and believes them to all be thieves and murderers.  Carolyn and Davey hold onto faith that everything has a reason even though Davey is young, his understanding of God and humanity is remarkable.

Isabella and Francisco have been left in the Arizona desert to die, their "coyote" stole all of their money and left them to wander aimlessly.  They happen upon a group of people whom they believe to be their salvation and find themselves in a worse situation.  Believing God will see them through, they wait for their chance to escape their newly found prison.  When the miracle arrives on Thanksgiving morning, the two set off into the unknown to find a safe haven in which to have their baby and begin their new life.

The members of both families have their own agendas with God and each person must find their faith in order to survive the insurmontable lessons that life is dealing in order to heal their broken hearts.

I was enthralled with the plot of this story, the evils that humanity can do to another is heart-wrenching.  If you have a weak disposition, some of the scenes described may upset you, they are written with much depth of emotion that you cannot help but cry from the injustice in the world.

I found that each of the characters were strongly written and well described.  Each one had their own persona and you will have no problems following any dialogue that may occur.  The dialogue was a bit cliched in areas, but it works for the believability of human nature, we don't always speak in well structured sentences and most of our lingo or common speak is full of cliches.

I loved the back story characters, especially Isabella's grandfather, his emotions brings you closer to the world around us.  Through his eyes we see the decay of his neighbourhood and watches the joy slip from his neighbours eyes.  Everyone walks while looking over their shoulders wondering when the next senseless acts of barbaristic attacks to the innocent will occur.  I found the book to fray your emotions on many levels.

I would give A Christmas Journey Home a four and a half stars out of five, I did find the story to be a bit predictable but the read is still entertaining and the characters ingraining.  You feel for everyone in the story, as everyone is reaching for the same ideals, without even realizing it.

The ending was superb and author, Kathi Macais, leaves you with enough to let your imagination finish the tale without having to do it for you.

SYNOPSIS:
During Isabella Alcantara’s seventh month of pregnancy, her parents and siblings are murdered in gang- and drug-related violence, simply because their home was targeted by mistake. Isabella knows she was spared only because she now li

2. The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy

The Scarlett Pimpernel (The MacMillan Classics, 76864)

Rating:
Normally, I don’t particularly like historical fiction, but this book is an exception. I have seen a few movie versions of this story and so when I read the book, I had some expectations. The actual events were different than I expected, but the story was great. I really like this because I like the idea of someone secretly rescuing those who can no longer help themselves. This story takes place during the French Revolution, when men, women, and children were taken to the guillotine daily for committing no other crime than being born a part of the aristocracy. The Scarlett Pimpernel is a secretive and mysterious person who is committed to saving as many innocents as possible. However, he is hunted on every side and a when the two sides of his life conflict because of the woman he loves, it will take all his tricks to survive.

3. The Once and Future King by T.H. White

The Once and Future King

Rating:
This book is the classic story of King Arthur and Camelot. I really enjoyed the story and the book. I have always liked the story of King Arthur and although the book is really sad in many ways, it is also a great story about overcoming the evils around us. The reason the rating is so low is because later in the story there is a lot of discussion about adultery with Lancelot and Guinevere. The book is split into four parts. The first is my favorite since it covers the story of the sword in the stone off of which Disney based the classic movie of the same name. Each of the other parts covers a different stage of Arthur’s life. This is a classic piece of literature and is a great read, but may not be the best for younger readers.

4. Savvy by Ingrid Law

Savvy -

Rating:
This was a fun book and it was very clean and appropriate for the whole family. It had a different way of looking at having a "superpower" except in this book the power was called a savvy. The story is about a family that obtains their savvy on their thirteenth birthday. Just before Mibs' birthday, her father is in a terrible accident. She is convinced that her savvy will give her the ability to wake her father from his coma. This leads her to stow away with siblings and friends on a bus in order to reach her father. When she realizes that not only is the bus going the wrong way, but her savvy is not what she expected, she will learn more about herself and everyone on the bus will be changed forever.

5. Raven's Gate by Anthony Horowitz

Rating -
This is the first book in the gatekeeper series. It was a very interesting story. I'm not sure whether I would say that it is worth owning or just reading, it will depend on the next books in the series. The book is definitely not for very young readers. It was kind of dark and creepy. Also, there were a couple of fairly graphic moments

6. Making Waves by Randi Reisfield and H. B. Gilmour

Making Waves (Candy Apple)

This is the latest Candy Apple book, and the same rating from all of the previous candy apple books still applies. The story was a little High School Musical meets secret life of Hannah Montana with a little American Idol party thrown in just for fun. Emily, Jenna, and L. J. have been best friends since the third grade but when Aubrey moves into town they decide to include her in her group. But Aubrey is hiding something and keeps ditching her new friends. The friends must overcome their problems and discover Aubrey's secret before their friendship is ruined forever.

7. The Willoughbys by Lois Lowry

The Willoughbys

Like previous Lois Lowry books (like The Giver, and Number the Stars) this book was extremely well written and wildly entertaining. It will be read and loved by millions. The only reason I am giving it a one angel rating, is that as much as I liked it, it's not something I could read over and over again. I don't know why, it's just one of those things. That said, it is definitely worth picking up and reading through to the end. The humor is witty and a little bit sarcastic. And the book references common themes in classic literature(orphans, wealthy donors, lovable nannies, etc.).

In the Willoughby family the kids and the parents both come to the conclusion that they would be better off without the other. So while the parents are hatching a Hansel and Gretel like plan to get rid of the children, the kids are trying to find a way to become orphans. The book guides us through both plots as both parties do whatever they can to achieve their goal.

8. Princess Power Series by Suzanne Williams

The series was light fun and original. I liked that the princesses weren't typical proper princesses and all had unique and interesting personalities. The stories were simple and easy to read.

1 - Princess Power #1: The Perfectly Proper Prince (Princess Power) - Princess Lysandra holds auditions for a talent show in order to find other adventurous princesses. On their first adventure, the girls discover a real frog prince.
2 - Princess Power #2: The Charmingly Clever Cousin (Princess Power) - Fatima is staying with her sister Selime to help care for her new nephew. But when Selime's husband Ahmed goes missing and his cousin Yusef takes over the castle, Fatima gets suspicious. Fatima and her friends must discover the true whereabouts of Ahmed.
3 - Princess Power #3: The Awfully Angry Ogre (Princess Power) - Tansy's kingdom is having ogre trouble, and two of her brothers are determined to put a stop to the terror. But when her brothers are turned to stone Tansy and her friends must save the day.
4 - Princess Power #4: The Mysterious, Mournful Maiden (Princess Power) - Elena finds a comb on the beach and starts having dreams about the comb's lost owner. Elena and her friends must find the owner before it is too late.
5 - Princess Power #5: The Stubbornly Secretive Servant (Princess Power) - The Princesses are visiting Lysandra at her sister Gabriella's castle. Everyone is looking forward to Prince Jonathon's visit, but for some reason he never shows up.

9. The Caped 6th Grader Series by Zoe Quinn

These are great books for girls that like super heroes. They are girly, a little bit cheesy, and pretty funny. I really enjoyed the fact that they are quite a bit different than most girly books, and they would probably appeal to a wider audience.

Description:
1 - The Caped 6th Grader: Happy Birthday, Hero! (The Caped Sixth Grader) - On her 12th birthday, Zoe discovers that she inherited super hero powers from her Grandpa. And no one, not even her parents can ever know about it.
2 - The Caped 6th Grader: Totally Toxic (The Caped Sixth Grader) - Zoe uses her powers (before her training is complete) to investigate a factory that is dumping toxic waste into her towns river.
3 - The Caped 6th Grader: Lightning Strikes! (The Caped Sixth Grader) - Zoe works for the comic book author Electra Albright during a school assignment. But somehow Electra's comic book story line is eerily similar to Zoe's super hero family stories.
4 - The Caped Sixth Grader: Cabin Fever (The Caped Sixth Grader) - Zoe goes to Super Hero Camp for the summer, and finds herself face to face with her best friend Howie. Could Howie really be a super too?

10. Callie for President by Robin Wasserman

Callie For President (Candy Apple)

This wasn't my favorite book in the series, but it was fun. It was well written but the characters weren't quite as like able as in other books. They were kind of mean. When Callie finds herself running for student counsel president against Brianna the most popular girl in school, things get ugly. Between secrets, turning herself into someone she's not, and mudslinging, Callie almost loses not one but both of her best friends. Can she find the real Callie Singer before things go to far, and she actually wins the election?

11. Dumped by Popular Demand by P.G. Kain

The Social Experiments of Dorie Dilts: Dumped by Popular Demand (The Social Experiments of Dorie Dilts)

This book was pretty entertaining. It was about a kind of nerdy girl named Dorie who moved to a new town and tried doing a scientific experiment to learn how to become popular. The book is full of the scientific method and nerdiness which I could appreciate. being somewhat of a nerd myself. Using the scientific method Dorie discovered that to become popular she must first date, and then get dumped by a boy named Grant. But when Dorie's plans backfired she has to decide what is more important, friends or popularity. The only thing to be aware of with the content, is that the gword is used in normal conversation and they do kiss once.

12. The Final Warning by James Patterson

The Final Warning (Maximum Ride, Book 4) by James Patterson

This was the fourth book in the Maximum Ride Series and it was pretty good. There was less action and less swearing, but there was also a lot of talk about the Gren House effect. That seemed to be the main theme of this particular book in the series. So heads up for any pro/anti Green House Believers.

In the book, Max and her flock go to Antartica to study the effect of Green House Emissions. In between penguins and talk of melting ice caps, her flock gets captured by an evil scientist who wants to sell the flock to the highest bidder. But during the auction a tornado rips through Florida causing untold destruction and allowing the flock to escape.

13. The Hall Family Chronicles by Jane Langton

The Hall Family Chronicles by Jane Langton

Review -
These books are pretty funny and a good introduction for younger children into the world of magic. FYI - The books have some big words that may be hard for early readers, because they talk a lot about Transcendentalism and have poetry and writings by Emerson and Thoreau.

Description -
I've only read a few of these books, but I have them all on hold and will update the descriptions when I get them.

The Diamond in the Window (The Hall Family Chronicles) - Eleanor and Eddie Hall embark on a mission to rescue their missing aunt and uncle from a magical dream world.
The Swing in the Summerhouse (Hall Family Chronicles, Book 2) -
The Astonishing Stereoscope (Hall Family Chronicles, Book 3) -When Eddie receives a magical stereoscope in the mail, Eleanor and Eddie enter the magical world of self discovery. (The book also deals with the question of religion)
The Fledgling (Hall Family Chronicles, Book 4) -
The Fragile Flag (Hall Family Chronicles (Numbered)) -
The Time Bike (Hall Family Chronicles) -
The Mysterious Circus (Hall Family Chronicles) -
The Dragon Tree - I have an ARE of this book and will read it shortly.

14. Fall of the Templar by Derek Benz amd J.S. Lewis

Fall Of The Templar (Grey Griffins) by Derek Benz and J.S. Lewis

Rating:
This was my favorite book so far in the Grey Griffins Series. It was the easiest to read and understand, and also the most satisfying. It was also fast paced and engaging. The book did have quite a bit of fighting but there was nothing graphic. The Grey Griffins Series would be a great read for those who love magic, King Arthur, Templar Knights, and fantasy.

Description:
In the third Grey Griffins novel, the battle continues for Max and his friends to save the world. With new powers and stronger enemies, this could prove to be the fiercest battle yet. Max must destroy the spear of ragnarok and stop his father from releasing the dragon that guards the world tree before the world is destroyed.

Sleepover Squad by P.J. Denton

Rating:
These books are kind of silly but fun. Younger girls would probably love these books, but some of the words may be hard for the intended 6-9 age group.

Camp Princess 2: Unicorns? Get Real! (Camp Princess) by Kathryn Lasky

Rating:
This is the second camp princess book, and it stars Alicia's no nonsense turret mate Princess Gundersnap. It's funny, clean, and a great princess book. Kathrn Lasky did a great job tying all the books in the series together by having each girl's story be part of an unfinished tapesty.

Description:
Gundersnap's mother took her prized pony into battle. Gundersnap is worried that she may never see her beloved pony again. Gundersnap must overcome what her mind is telling her and believe in the magic of the unknown.

19. Totally Crushed by Eliza Willard

Totally Crushed (Candy Apple) by Eliza Willard

Rating:
This was another great book from the Candy Apple Series, and believe it or not, it was the girliest so far. Anyone that's had a crush on their best boy/girl friend or had the situation reversed, will love this book. It has all the awkwardness that comes with friends and relationships.

Description:

So when she finds a red carnation on her locker, with her best "boy" friend's name attached, she doesn't know what to think. She's never thought of him as more than a friend, and to make matters worse her best "girl" friend has a crush on him. Annabel must sort out the carnation mystery before she loses both her friends.

Rating:
I was at the library with my six year old niece and she told me I had to read these books because they looked sooo funny. I had seen the movie so I wasn't that excited to read them, but I went ahead and got all of them anyway. And she was right, they were funny. 22. Everybody’s Happy Now? Prozac and Happiness

early-bird-banner.JPG

There has been much in the UK news about Prozac and other anti-depressants over the last couple of days. This is because of a recently released study from the University of Hull, which suggests that some of these drugs might not be as effective as we have been previously led to believe. With over 31 million prescriptions being given out for these drugs in England alone, this is a grave statement indeed. In light of this study, this morning I’m bringing you an extract from our book Happiness: The Science Behind Your Smile by Daniel Nettle, which sheds a little light on the history of Prozac and other “happy pills”.
