4. Harts Pass No. 263 - For Tom Zbyszewski, Andrew Zajac, and Richard Wheeler

For those of you farther from home, the three young firefighters remembered above, recently lost their lives while keeping our community safe. Famous is a poem that Tom Zbyszewski, a local kid working summer fires, performed in his state finals for Poetry Out Loud in the spring of 2013. He may also have performed it here at Twisp's Merc Theater, as I swear that I can picture him reciting it.

In any case, it is a fine poem and a worthy tribute (I hope) to the everyday but still heroic efforts that our firefighters and many others make to keep others safe -- even at times at great cost. A humble kind of service that is inherently heroic of course, but never demanding of any particular praise or recognition. Thank you all for your service and rest in peace.

6. Harts Pass No. 120

The wolf "recovery" in eastern Washington hit another large snag last week with the complete and total elimination of the Stevens County Wedge Pack. Thor and Melanie pay some tribute here and hope for better days.

7. In the wake of a giant...

For the last week, I have been humbled and awed, saddened and inspired, by my return to teaching in a high school art room. Tragically, Sean McCabe, the beloved art teacher at Liberty Bell High School, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of thyroid cancer. It has been my sincere pleasure to fill in for him in this time of need.

He has spent a career giving of himself, and the inspiration - both artistically and personally - that he provides for so many is a force to be reckoned with. Rest easy Sean. Be well, and fight like the Giant that you are in so many other ways!
