Here is project I worked on a few months back--the cover for Highlights' HighFive's March '14 cover! It's presently out and about (I saw it in a local magazine shop a few days ago). Below is a photo I took of the final, printed cover, then the actual illustration, sans copy, etc., as well as a close-up of the kids. Below that are some of the rough cover concepts I submitted. My thanks to Highlights for letting me be a part of making their magazine a fun read for kids!

Well, here we are at the tail-end of February, with March (along with spring!) coming up in a few days. So I wanted to share the project I worked on a few months back–the cover for Highlights’ HighFive’s March ’14 cover! It’s presently out and about (I saw it in a local magazine shop a few days ago). This is an event from last Thursday, which was the St. Jean Baptist celebration here in Quebec. Many of the villages/towns/boroughs in the area had staged celebrations, festivals & fireworks. It had rained in the late afternoon and with that brought cooler temperatures. My husband was spending the day with his brother and I was on my own. Until early evening, that is, when there was a knock on the door and–Surprise! We had a visit from an old friend! And he had no problem accompanying me down to the yacht club to watch the fireworks from the docks, as well as spend some time catching up. Ah, summer!

Waiting in hole-in-the-wall taqueria’s…. …for food like this. That’s a sope. It’s a rare find, even in South Texas! Sunday drives in the country where you see the likes of this… And this: Whimsy on a fence post (No, I left him there)… Down town Corpus Christi at play: Pretty Sunsets:

Sometimes when the weather isn’t conducive for sailing (or even if it is), it’s nice to just sit inside our boat and relax. Such was the case today. The skies looked threatening and we decided to just hang out. It was a busy weekend, given it was my husband’s birthday today. We threw him a [...]

I was out on the sailboat last night with my husband, sort of helping him work on some electronics and rebuild the pump. I’m not a good helper as I get impatient and don’t enjoy being micro-managed (which he kind of has to do because I don’t know the names of tools, tubes, wires, etc.). [...]

A quick sketch during yesterday’s lunch break (beautiful weather here, btw!). I’ve been hooked on a little avocado-tomato-beans (black or garbanzo) combo that I eat with baked pita chips. SO good. I’ve been eating that for about a month straight. It’s tough to find inexpensive avocados here, though. Down in South Texas, they are usually [...]

Hey, everyone, we have a comment from a friend over at the Guys Read blog regarding the Evil Bunny Lagomorph video:
Funny though....

Wow! That bottom picture is amazing with the pink! I like the look of the top one, I love avocados. That is what they are isn’t it?
Wow… Just wow.
Jessie: Thanks! Yes, I loved how the sun was setting over the down town area. Of course, I played with the colors a bit. Avocodos? Yeppers! Such a good little meal, that sope!
Jazz: I’m glad you liked the pics. Thanks for letting me know!
Now I’m homesick!!
Funny, I’d not realized that the elaborate iron work fences that greeted visitors to one’s ranch were lacking here!! But, I’ve never seen a single one of these here in the Georgia countryside. My dad had many a ranch in Texas…and most often these entry gates, some windmills, and even sometimes oil rigs were scattered about.
Thanks for sharing.
As the rain pours down in buckets and the wind howls here in Vancouver…It is so yucky outside today, I find it a relief and a delight to see your hot sunny photos of a place I have never been to. And that avocado creation looks soooo delicious. Thanks Paula for posting these pics. Very nice indeed. You have cheered up at least one sun deprived person.
Thanks so much, Mary Jane! Sorry to hear it’s been so dismal in Vancouver. I’m in Montreal now, and though it’s sunny presently, it’s too cold for shorts and slaps (my uniform when in South Texas). These photos, too, will help keep me warm on the cold, snowy days!
Oh yes…. that is Texas! …and it’s still warm here too!
