In bigger city areas there is a free maid service for cancer patients. You might call American Cancer Society or local support groups or even social workers at nearby cancer centers to find out contact info. In my little town, that is not available. One group of friends organized a monthly "tea party"--they got together, spent an hour cleaning (group of 6 that's all it took) and then shared tea and treats with their recovering friend. The patient said it was so special, they continue their tea parties without the cleaning at various cafes around town doing one per season--a new tradition which started with a purpose. Good luck with all you are doing for her.

Advice re: your friend. Just be there as you have always been in your friendship--if that means making a meal or taking her to treatment, or watching a movie together, do it. Don't stop making contact--people often do out of not knowing what to say or do. Help her find something in the future to hold as a beacon in her recovery--a trip, something new to try together, a milestone in her kids' lives. I found much help in a class I took called Mindful Meditation based on Jon Kabat-Zinn's work. Mostly, hold her in your heart with love.

I researched a lot of small presses as well as agents. Twilight Times Books was highly recommended. So I began the querying process (sent out 102 query letters) and was lucky enough for them to pluck me out of the slush pile. Weird, because I was offered agent representation two days after I signed the contract with Twilight Times Books.

Guess it was the right book at the right time kind of thing!
