1. 100 Canvas Challenge Continued

Today I reworked an old Canvas... Revived it, and got out some frustration. I dealt with some PERSONAL things and found this very cathartic.

3. Plein Air Exercise...

These past few days I retreated to a Childhood Camp with my Daughter.

I attended Camp Teresita Pines, in Wrightwood, CA as a child, returned as a Counselor, and to this day maintain some of the best friends, friendships, sisterhood, and so much more with the women I grew up with and their extended families.

I took some time to slow down and breath (laryngitis won) but I just slowed down a bit.

One of my favorite spots in camp is our chapel. It has been officially categorized as a historic landmark....  The camp was opened in the 20's by the Catholic Daughter's and functioned as an All Girl's Camp through the 1990's.  It has since been purchased and now lovingly run, restored and upgraded by the LIONS.  Lions Camp At TERESITA Pine's!!!

Every morning at camp I wake up to no alarm clock. I allow the Blue Stellar Jays and Woodpeckers to call and wake me up. Day one at 6:05.  This time I took my Canvas Pad and laid out a plan for my oil painting.

I have done various Watercolors, Sketches, and Ink Drawings of this chapel to the point that I could sketch it by memory... I sketch in Plein Air and watch the sun come up as the changes in lighting and shadows are just magical.
I blocked in some of this color while Fiona slept. I sat outside my cabin door and worked from memory...  Then on Sunday morning I returned early to finish...
I will probably add a few minor details, but for the most part it's done.  And this original will remain mine.... I am going to frame it and keep it for me.  Perhaps I will make prints or notecards from the image... But we'll see.

And... Yes, Fiona and I had a great time!!!

5. 100 Canvas Challenge

6" x 6" Oil

This Canvas #6 of the 100 Canvas Challenge.

A MORNING AT FARMER'S MARKET resulted in this Oil Sketch of the Produce Stand across from me.  It was a very hot morning, 97Ëšin the shade... and I actually ended up ill with a migraine.

I recovered by hydrating and got other stuff done too, but early to bed and lots of water and a note to self and others... DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!

9. What's New? What's Next?

Springing into a New Season of Fresh Art...  that's what's new.

Starting with New Projects, New Materials and Developing New Art for myself as well as for my students and clients is all part of the organic nature of being an artist.

First, I look at my schedule and in between kids, school, assignments, scouts, brownies, Irish Dance, and other family obligations, then I see what's available.  I have carved out Monday Evenings as being MINE for the next few weeks...  every other week.  And then I have successfully planned that the "first week" of each month is for Me, My family, and my Children... so I can connect with them, and we can have some quality time together... eat together... and get a moment of face-time.  If not for that then the rest is just a chaotic mess and we are all so stressed out.

Negotiating Away Time... for me that's exploring with my paints and easel, and going further than my own back yard and studio.... actually roaming further than the next zipcode too.  So on my agenda for the "out of area" excursions are:

Family Away Time - a Night or Two either up the coast, or in the mountains.  Camping and Exploring.  Maybe pastels or watercolors to play with while I watch the kids play and romp with the dog.  That sounds PERFECT!

April 18, Christ Lutheran Church and School - I will partake in Art Demonstrations, Plein-Air and just see what happens - Info Here

Plein Air on Wednesdays...  Every Wednesday I am going to "Attempt" to get out and paint, sketch or at least enjoy some fresh air and take photos that I can bring back and paint in the studio....
Keeping it Simple.

Look for "Wednesday Workshops" for an up-to-date calendar, to Reserve your Spot, or find out where I will be next...

Cloisonne ---  and other new things:  A new (to me) art technique that I am going to learn!  I plan on documenting and sharing this experience with you.

New Art Lessons and Summer Programs: are now scheduled and on my art school blog.  Visit the Art School Web Page Here to learn more and sign up for summer classes.  Suitable for Adults and Children.

13. 30 Days in September!!! My Artistic Challenge to myself!

I have signed up for the 30 Day Challenge, where I will produce and post a new image for each day in the month of September.  Will it be a quick sketch or watercolor like the Rubber Ducky? (yesterday in the Port of LA / Tall Ships Festival.

Or perhaps a Native Garden Path (such as is shown in the photos taken at the Madrona Marsh Nature Center & Preserve - Native Plant Garden this week)

Or beneath the Trees and Besides the Waterfalls outside the Ports O' Call Restaurant in San Pedro?

Maybe this guy wants to be "Seagull III" to continue the Pencil/Acrylic Drawings that I've already got framed?

Of course, nothing beats the charm of the oversized rubber ducky that came into the harbor this week, escorting the Tall Ships!

Let's see what September will bring...  but until then, I will continue to take inventory of my photographs, and put my favorites together into a smaller collection!  Some of these will make it in there!

17. PET PORTRAITS AND FAMILY FAVORITES!!!

PET PORTRAITS AND FAMILY FAVORITES!!!

It's one thing to take your photographs and put them into a frame.  It's another thing to take it to a big-box store and blow it up and put it on a commercial canvas.  But what about the photo that is special, but is not quite light enough, or perhaps is too bright.  Or someone has "photo-bombed" it and you just can't frame it the way you wanted...

My take on family favorites is this....  let me paint you a picture or a portrait to make that moment just right...  Who? What? How?

This is MAX... my parent's Australian Shepherd.  He sat before me after a family dinner... so I took out my pencils and did this small sketch.  I had never really spent much time drawing dogs and cats like I did with MAX....  This Measures about 4" x 6".

Portraits in Pencil:  4"x 6" = $45.00  / 8" x 10" = $ 60.00

Paintings start at $65 for a 6" x 8" in Oil

19. Art Every Day and Magic in May

May First... has always had a warm place in my Artistic Heart...

Images of Color, Roses, Ribbons, Maypoles have been present in my mind ever since I was a little girl.... and now that I have my own children I hope to continue to inspire them the way I was inspired.

So every day in May I am going to post a little bit of Magic!!!!

A Tag Line that I am incorporating into my business logo is this:

"There is Art in Every heART... if you are smART you love ART...."

Some new projects I am working on will take me back to some previous artwork..... inspired by new images too...

Such as:  "Laguna Blue" which I painted on an 50" x 50" canvas... it is bright and colorful... and an new image shared with me by my friend Linda has for obvious reasons inspired me to take out a new canvas and paint a similar painting....

"Laguna Blue"  50"x 50" Oil on Canvas

This is the new image, taken by Linda off the coast of Malibu.  You can see why it reminded me of my Laguna painting.  So....  I now I just need to decide on what canvas size to use... it will be large!

My second set of paintings is of my Birds of Paradise.
The original Bird painting is a 12" x 12" Oil, which was Sold a few years ago

The new paintings are Acrylic on Miniature Canvases.
Two of them, 3" x 6".  I have the leaves and background blocked in... the rest will be completed when I paint on site at one of my Boutiques or Art Shows over the next few weeks.

For more information about my art, custom orders, murals, or teaching opportunities, please contact me.

20. Introducing "Momma Owl"

This is "Momma Owl"....

She began as a demonstration sketch as I taught my "Wax and Watercolor" technique to some children on Monday.  After the lesson I let the watercolor dry and came back in with some Oil Pastels to enhance some of the texture and brighten some colors...  I really love this to the point that she is now ready to be Matted and Framed!  I'm thinking Deep Blue Matt and a Gold Frame is in order....

There will be more Owls... I simply love drawing and painting them!

Happy 2014, and Welcome to a New Year!

New projects for the 2014 year include a series of paintings and drawing featuring life, city, nature, and area attractions through the eyes of children.

The first two images are well into their painting production:  The "Amusement" featuring my own boys, David and Alex on a "Scrambler" at the Pacific Park in Santa Monica....   and a second image of my daughter, Fiona on a Carousel Ride.

There will be more pictures of children at the beach, or on swings, enjoying life as children play and parents watch with joy...
