1. Davis, 29, baby boy, and bicycles

My son was born on April 7. He is a redhead just like my daughter (YAY!) He is the easiest happiest boy and I am so lucky! I had a c-section and took two weeks off of school. I returned to finish finals while still recovering and with a 2 week old at home. I still managed straight A's and finally finished my transfer requirements to head to UC Davis! We just moved here and I love it! Katie loves it. Sean loves it. Finn is a baby =). We have been walking everyday through the beautiful streets and campus. It is a good way to melt off the baby weight. I fit in my old jeans again! The farmers market is awesome, though I did fall down some steps that look like a ramp. I was wearing a short dress and all I could think was, "Don't flash the panties, don't flash the panties..." I skinned my knee and Katie screamed calling attention to my embarrassment. On the 21st of August I turned 29. I have got to be the oldest undergraduate student at Davis, especially in the Design program, but the family housing is great and we are meeting a lot of people in our same situation (students at Davis, married, kids), but most of them are working towards their Ph.D's. I feel like Tommy boy! Can't wait to get started and I already have ideas for my animation short, maybe I will try for Spike and Mike's? This quarter I am taking Design courses toward my major, I hope that they are amazing classes and that I can keep up... Going to have a glass of wine because the baby is asleep and Katie is with Grandma. Goodnight!

2. rockababy Brand Website Relaunch

Hours and hours and hours and hours and.... well you get the point... BUT the website is revamped and relaunched! www.rockababybrand.com looks AMAZING if I do say so myself. I designed every aspect and spent my entire winter break building the site. Tomorrow is my day to play with Katie. We are going to make projects, go to the park, ride her bike, and whatever she wants to do... Because Tuesday I am back in school FULL time. I am over 6 months pregnant now and the baby will be delivered via c-section on or around April 6th. The insulin doses are going up and up and the appointments get more and more frequent. Soon I will start non stress testing 2 times a weeks. Between Sweet Success, OB appointments, trips to the lab, and ultrasounds I already feel like I am a chicken with my head cut off. Now add in Full time classes, a very active 3 year old, a strict regimen of diet and insulin and I am going to be like a four headed chicken with all of it's heads chopped off! The children's book that I illustrated is finally available on authorhouse and Amazon (it is cheaper on author house). I am fast approaching my due date and my transfer to Davis! Valentine's day is going to be fun! We may take Katie to see a Disney on Ice!
Please check out the website and tell your friends! I am very proud and I want to share!

3. Diabetes, pregnancy, and kids.... Oh my!

This semester is almost over (Thank the Lord!), but Christmas fast approaches and soon after I will be back in school. I finished the children's book and I am meeting with Dick Wilkinson (the author) on Wednesday to approve the layout for publishing.

It would have been the perfect gift for everyone in the family, but it won't be ready until after Christmas. Trying to make a little extra cash to buy my nieces and nephews gifts, so I am drawing for Kidzart again. I have done some really cool holiday themed pieces. I can't wait to have the time to work on the rockababy Brand website. I am going to completely revamp the look. We have special offers, more product, quizzes and coloring pages to offer. We will also be available on etsy and cafe press before the next semester starts. Katie is going to start preschool. It will be so good for her and such a time-saver for us. Sean can sleep in a normal schedule and I can study. This way, when Katie comes home, we will be spending quality time with her. The house will be clean, the laundry done, the studying done, and it will be time for family meals and activities. I am a little sad. She has never had daycare. Sean and I rotate watching her (so he can sleep and work all night) and she stays with both grandma's a few hours a couple of times a week. It will be an adjustment for me; for Katie it will be: "See Ya Mom!" She will finally have friends other than Caillou and Kipper! In the meantime I have been attending a bazillion doctor's appointments and watching my blood sugar while monitoring 4 insulin injections a day. It is a little hard to do with my crazy class schedule. I finished my online grammar course and will finish my Earth Science lab early. I NEED to study for the finals in Math and Earth Science. When will the preschool call? I need the time! I would love to make some cool ornaments with rockababy on them to commemorate our 1st year, maybe we can offer them on the site! Hopefully I will have more to offer soon...

4. Someday

I am 11 weeks pregnant today. I just finished an entire weekend in the sun selling my rockababy tees at the American River Music Festival and I am going to school full time, while illustrating the rest of the book and raising a child. I am so tired. Do you ever feel like nothing will go right? Like every little thing you try to take care of and spend hours on the phone for is coming back at you. It is never taken care of. I try to check things off of my mile long list, but instead it is growing. Why can't I go to the pharmacy and say "Well that is done!" instead of "I'll be back tomorrow." Or make an important call to take care of something and be done instead of generating 3 more important calls. I want to sit down and cry. But I don't have time. I still wouldn't trade any of it for all of the money in the world, but I really wish that I could lay down on a clean bed in a clean house full of clean laundry and get a foot massage while eating something delicious and watching a really great movie. What a gift that would be! Well, I have to go and read a Chapter in Art History, 2 Chapters in Earth Science, make-up a lab and paint about 14 more illustrations. Someday... that's what keeps me going... working hard now to bank on someday...

5. Life is strange

So I started doing this business and started doing the illustrations because I could not find a job after getting my AA in design. I had to keep myself busy. At this point the money is terrible. I spend hours painting and get 20 dollars for each one in the hopes that the 25 percent royalties will pay off in the future. I work my tooshie off on designing and creating and planning for rockababy Brand, but no money in the near future, right now the business is in debt! I am going to work my butt off to go to school, but thats money for the future, too. Kidzart wants me to do more projects for them and I may be getting calls to do logos and print work for a couple of businesses, but it is not enough money to constitute as a job. I hope that all of this effort and hard work now will make my future a little more plush. When I say plush I am talking about not living paycheck to paycheck and maybe having dental and medical insurance. All I can do is try... What if the illustrations make money? What if the business takes off? What if I start getting inundated with design work? There are so many what ifs, but that's the way it is when you are a mommy and have to be at home to care for your kids, and try to make money, too. Nothing is sure in life, but a 9-5 job is a lot more sure than being an illustrator. Even in this economy... Finding one is the hard part. I have hope, that is the most important part, I have hope! I will keep trying to help others with my talent, I will keep striving for success and if you keep trying eventually you have to succeed.

"Experience is just the name we give our mistakes"
(as Oscar Wilde says) Well I have a lot of experience, and all I can do is keep learning from my experiences.

Yesterday we went to a networking luncheon at Old Spaghetti Factory. I don't know if it will bring business, but it was a nerve racking experience. Getting up in front of people in groups is very hard for me and I felt really dumb, which is why my sister-in-law is the marketer in the business. Hopefully someone will see past my rambling and at least check out the website, or tell their friends. I also took Katie to her first ballet tap class, which was adorable and so much fun for her. She got such a work out, I wish I could take the class with her!
Now we have finally received all of our design and I am going to be revamping the website, but the mom design unfortunately is not centered. It would be okay if it was more dramatically off center, but it just looks like a mistake. That is 60 tees and onesies that we paid for that are off. I called the Print Center and Ruben said he would take a look, I hope that he takes care of the mistake without a hassle!
Zachary's Birthday Party is tomorrow and I am so lucky to have gotten an amazing asian fencing sword from a childhood friend. Zachary loves everything about weapons, his other gifts will be a bow and arrow, and an airsoft gun. His party will be at a gym, where we all get to jump on giant trampolines into pits of foam. When I say we all will, I mean the adults, too. How fun! Hopefully life will keep being exciting, but maybe a little less stressful. Off to bathe my daughter. www.rockababybrand.com

6. The designs and the work!

Okay, We have the Koi tattoo baby tees and onesies, The phoenix  tattoo infant and toddler shirts, now we are going to order fake tattoos of the rockababy Brand logo! We are going to a networking luncheon at Old Spaghetti Factory, and are scoping out some fairs in the area. We want to figure out a way to go to a fair in L.A. or Hollywood, we want to somehow get in touch with a famous person who has babies or toddlers. Pretty soon we will be sending some shirt to the local radio DJ's who are pregnant. My illustrations are going well, but I have a lot of work. Dick has added at least 10 pictures, but also offered me 20 dollars a drawing (up 5 a piece), the 200 dollar bonus, and 25 percent net profits. I need to figure out how to market this book, too. If I can get the book around to enough people maybe someone will see the illustrations who is connected  with Caldecott. The the book would be in every library, school and book store! How great would that be! If I could have a bio I could also promote rockababy Brand. I am wondering if we could eventually offer a coloring book with the tattoo designs in it! School starts in about a month and I have like 36 more paintings to do, I have to optimize the website by adding content to the home page, I have to design the car decal, I have to go by the college so I can get financial aid, Scope out the pay per clicks, and I have to be a playmate, friend and mother to the cutest little 3 year old in the world. Busy, Busy, Busy... I am much happier busy than wavering and feeling useless and lost.

I also need to take pictures of the actual tees and onesies now that we have them... The tee drawing is cute, but not as good an example as the actual tee. Look for all of the website additions in the next few weeks. www.rockababybrand.com

7. Tattoo artwork tees and onesies for infants and toddlers

So, I just read that Christian Audigier (the founder of Ed Hardy) is going in with Jon Gosslin to make a line of children's clothes. I don't think it will trample too far on our market since we are infants and toddlers. I am hoping that there is a way for us to get our name out there. Marketing is the key to any successful business. Ed Hardy and Jon Gosslin know that. We need to MARKET. We've got the stay at home mommy entrepreneur angle, the very different style of design, and hopefully a more specified market. I think we need to address the market locally while working our way up to globally. Marketing is a lot harder than I would have thought. Keywords, connections, ad words, mailers,... We need a focused plan to promote our angle. rockababy Brand is GOING to be a known brand!
Our First Order arrived! Here is Kiley wearing the phoenix design (She is wearing a really big size!)

8. rockababy Brand

It is really tough to be a mom and have ambition! I am now the co owner of rockababy Brand. An online company that sells designer tees, onesies and more for infants and toddlers. I create the designs. I created the website and I am working on illustrating a children's book for a wonderful older man who has amazing stories to tell. In between this I am creating ads for my church, trying to keep a house clean with a two year old, planning her 3rd birthday party and trying to breathe! You should go check out my site. I made every little detail myself and I am so proud of it! www.rockababybrand.com

9. Wanting what I have and what I want!

Life. Who can ask for more? Everyone. We all have this inner drive. I love my husband and my daughter and I appreciate every little moment I have with my little family, but.... I want to have a car that will get me to a destination without it dying or causing us to die of a heatstroke because it is overheating and we have to run the heater as we sit in stop lights in 105 degree weather. I want to have an apartment that has two bedrooms so that Sean and I can have alone time every once in awhile. I want to be able to buy Katie new summer clothes and a Birthday present.

The economy hadn't effected us until I finished school. We have been struggling on a single (low wage) income for years, but I finished my AA and hoped to get a great job to get us out of our rut. That is not possible. AA? Who cares? Art? Graphic Design? Keep Dreaming!... Well I am going to. I have decided to keep going to school (Fortunately Sean is so supportive) but I am also going to freelance to bring money home. I am currently illustrating a children's book written by an 87 year old man who has amazing stories and they come from his life. Granted the money is less than minimum wage and the demands are high, but at least I have something to work hard for that is an escape from Spongebob and swimming pools. I am also endeavoring to create a business with my sister-in-law and best friend Pam.
We have our license and our fictitious name. We have business cards and web space. I have a lot of work to create designs and recreate them in the computer. To create a website. To Market. That is the key! Marketing... and between Pam and a little help from me, we should be huge. Look out world! Keep checking for more info on this business (until we have more ready, it is a little bit of a secret) .  Anyway, wanting more... that is what has changed the world every time it changes.
Cheers!
