I love my job because where else to you get to hear snippets of conversation like the following?
First Grade Student: “My dog is named Porkslap.”
Teacher: “Pork Chop?”
Student: “No Porkslap. He’s named after a beer. My other dog is named Honey Wheat.”
Or this conversation between two Kindergarten boys:
Boy 1: “I love you. You are my best friend.”
Boy 2: “You can’t love me.”
Boy 1: “Why not?”
Boy 2: “Because if you love someone then you have to marry them and I’m going to marry my mom.”
I love teaching because I get to work with kids and kids have an amazing ability to find and celebrate the wonderfulness of life. Sparkly shoes that light up with each step make the owner’s eyes sparkle. A knitted cap in the likeness of a tiger has the wearer grinning from ear to ear. The energy created by this wonderfulness of life cannot be contained in their small bodies. It begs expression as they twirl, hop and skip down the hallway.
Adults could learn a thing or two from these sprites who grace our lives.
The other morning I stepped out early to walk my dogs. The sun had not yet risen, but the sky was beginning to lighten. As dawn emerged, the birds began to wake. With no other ambient noises, my ears were privy to an assortment of wild bird songs. It being spring, some of the birds launched immediately into their mating calls. The Barred Owl cried, “Who cooks for you?” and the Wild Turkeys gobbled back and forth to one another in the hopes of finding love. The deluge of calls continued as overhead I heard the Canada Geese honking their way north. Then, as the sky brightened even further, the cheery tweets of the Chickadees and the whistle of the Cardinal was added to the chorus. An occasional caw of a Common Crow punctuated the melody as did the drumbeat of the Piliated Woodpecker. Serenaded thusly, I walked my dogs in a state of wonder, listening intently for each new voice.
Often our ears are so bombarded by a cacophony of noise, we miss the delightful delicate sounds of the woods and fields. This spring I vow to spend more time listening.
To kick-start this with your own brood or group of students you might want to begin with the book, The Listening Walk by Paul Showers.
I’m also a huge fan of the children’s author Kevin Henkes. This year he has written a new book entitled simply, Birds. If you want to spur an interest in birds, this book is a great introduction encouraging the reader to incorporate several senses as well as the imagination.
I’m also going to celebrate by taking the time to bird watch. My bird feeder has served the likes of Cardinals, Flickers, Blue birds, Nuthatches, Chickadees and Downy Woodpeckers. Last year we had an Indigo Bunting and an Oriole stop by for a bite. I hope they decide to come back again this year. And I hope that you decide to take a moment and listen with your heart as well as your ears.
I don’t know whether or not this is an official holiday. I only know that as a native New Englander a bright spot at the end of a long dreary winter is the first sign of spring. Today I noticed the first robin of 2012. Although it is gray and a cold mist is falling, chilling a body to the bone, this harbinger of spring completely improved my mood.
I immediately wanted to commemorate this momentous occasion. But what to do? I realize that the official spring date is still several weeks away, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel and perhaps I can hurry things along with a celebration.
Tulips! This graceful flower never fails to inspire thoughts of warm weather and sunshine. So I set off to the market to buy a bunch. Whilst at the market I had thoughts of a springtime feast so I bought some fresh asparagus that will be later roasted with a bit of olive oil and salt and sprinkled with parmesan cheese. Nothing says spring like the taste of asparagus.
It’s still too cold to open the windows and air out the humble abode, but that won’t stop me from doing a little (and I do mean little) spring cleaning. I’ll clean out my clothes closet and bring some items to goodwill. While there, I might find a little windowsill treasure that invites the hope of spring.
If you are a teacher or a parent of a young child you might like to try what I used to do with my students. As spring drew near, I encouraged my students to be on the lookout for signs of spring. For our share time, students either showed a drawing of their observation or told about what they had seen. Needless to say, I read book upon book about this special season.
When my son was younger and inclined to go for long walks with me, we often went on a scavenger hunt of sorts, looking for indications of spring. Those were delightful ramblings. We were in no hurry to get to a particular destination. We truly did stop to smell the earth warming, feel the sunshine on our faces, and hear the songs of the birds who had finally returned home from their winter respite.
I hope that you will be on the lookout during these early March days. And since I no longer have an “official” classroom of my own I’d love to hear of your springtime discoveries and celebrations.

Today I’m celebrating my own holiday…The First Sign of Spring Day as of 1/1/1900
This holiday ought to keep me busy today. I happen to have five pets to love; three cats and two dogs. Although the cats outnumber the dogs, I’m really more of a dog person. All of our pets are adopted, but we actively sought out the dogs. The cats found us. It’s kind of a weird phenomenon. All three of our cats came to us by way of a deceased owner. So, although I’m a dog lover at heart, I’m outnumbered by cats. Luckily, two out of the three felines have delightful personalities, ummmm - catalities?
I don’t think I have to love the cats any more than usual. I’ll keep their cat’s box clean and their food and water dishes filled. I’ll pet them and let them in and out of the house on demand. And frankly, that’s about all the love these cats want from me.
The dogs, on the other hand, are another story. I’m their primary caretaker even though there are two other human beings living in the house who are perfectly able to help. I walk Zoe and Karma, feed them, and clean up after them. I am abundantly rewarded for my efforts. My pups greet me every day at the door with tail wags and kisses. They are not just happy to see me, they are ecstatic. No matter what kind of day I’ve had, the girls always brighten my day. In return for their daily devotion, I’m going to show my canine buddies a little extra love today. I’ll take them on an extended romp in the woods and maybe I’ll even bake them some homemade dog cookies.
What will you do for your furred, feathered or finned friends today? Maybe your cat would like some catnip or your fish might like their tank cleaned.
If you don’t have a pet, maybe you could offer to walk an elderly neighbor’s dog. Or perhaps you could donate a blanket, toy, or can of food to the local pet shelter. If you are really motivated, you could donate your time to an animal rescue facility. Whatever this day inspires, I hope you choose to show a little kindness to an animal who ask nothing more than to love and be loved.
Excuse me now while I let one of the cats outside.

The Author's Cat who likes to Oversee the Writing Process
Well, the blog has languished and it being the New Year, it’s time for me to ‘step it up’. January is National Hobby Month which is rather embarrassing for me since my hobby is writing. So what better way to celebrate my hobby than to start anew with my blog?
What’s your hobby? What fans the flames of your passions? What have you always secretly desired to try?
Writing is no longer my secret hobby. It used to be. I was afraid that once I admitted I liked writing people would ask to see what I had written. I was (at the time) too timid to share. I took a baby step and tried an on-line writing course. That was all it took. The flames had been fanned and I was a goner. It was easy to share on-line, because I did not have to see the critiquers’ faces nor they, mine. Once I started getting feedback and realized that I wouldn’t die from it, I shared my children’s stories with a writer’s group (face to face) and then with family and friends. I’m still standing and I’m having more fun than ever. Now, the last step is for me to share my writing with publishers. Wish me luck!
My resolution for this month is to celebrate my hobby every day by devoting time to writing
. Here are a few ideas:
1. Journal – the old-fashioned way – with paper and pen.
2. Meet with fellow author’s and share our work.
3. Continue crafting my children’s stories – I like the word craft rather than the term “work on”. Work doesn’t sound like hobby terminology.
4. Post on my Blog Site
5. Respond to fellow bloggers
6. Learn more about, get better and more creative at blogging
7. Finish formatting my children’s stories
8. Research publishers
9. Send out query letters and manuscripts to publishers
10. Read Writing magazines and articles
11. Write letters (not emails) to friends and family
12. Repeat as necessary

Love it! Much better than celebrating dead presidents (may they rest in peace). This morning I took Bailey and Sammy on the latter’s favorite 1 mile loop trail in the Andover woods. Sammy did great, he was full of pep. And most importantly, I walked at HIS pace, waited patiently as he sniffed piles of leaves and mossy rocks and tree stumps and small shrubs with a smile on his face. When Sammy gets back in the car, he lays down on the soft fleece that I have in the cargo area, and when I get home he always prefers to stay put on the soft cargo bed. I place the car so that he gets some warm sun through the open hatch. I go out every 30 minutes or so to see if he is done napping and wants to get out of the car. Most times it takes a bowl of kibble to coax him from his favorite place to nap. He just loves that car bed! Okay, I need to go ask him again if he’s ready for mommy to lift him out of the car. Back don’t fail me now! DOG’S RULE
You and Sammy are lucky to have each other.
3 dogs have shared our lives over the years . . . they are missed, gone – not forgotten. Currently happy to be pet-less – but have found that I’m still an animal magnet. Sat down on a friend’s sofa last evening – the only one without a pet and her cat promptly ‘chose’ me to come and sit with!
