3. Christmas in July?

Paperless Post®, an online card and invitation company,
reached out to me with an interesting question.
How would I celebrate Christmas in July?

Well, it’s summer.  I’m thinking about fresh lemonade,
cold watermelon, popsicles, and swimming with my kids.
And many of us are thinking about the beach.

Ah, of course!  I’ll team up with my favorite beach buddy characters.
Dive in with me into the creative relm, and let’s plan a splashing Christmas party.

For starters, my friend Crab will take care of the decorations.

Mrs. Octopus will bake her most festive treats.

Puffer fish will plan the party crafts and games.

Mr. Whale will round up some festive holiday music.
Can you guess his favorite song?  Frosty the ......

Star fish will bake his famous gingerbread star cookies.

Turtle will bring dreidels and chocolate gelts,
and share some Chanukah love too.

And you can trust that I will handle the invitations.
Thanks for joining me with this fun post.  Will I see you at the party?

4. Harry Potter Party

My girls, though years apart, are big Harry Potter fans.
We had a lot fun recreating Hogswarts and Diagon Alley in our home.
Enjoy the party photos, and hopefully you'll find some
inspiration for your Harry Potter party!

Mandrakes!  How fun are these?
To make them, you'll need Goetz Caramel Creams.
Work on the Mandrakes one at a time.  Roll and blend two pieces of candies
together.  H
eat the blended caramel in the microwave for about 5-8 seconds.
Shape the warm caramel to form the Mandrakes.  I used a skewer to
create the eyes and mouth.
Top the Mandrakes with faux plastic leaves.

For the base, bake chocolate cupcakes in
Wilton Pot Shaped Silicone Baking Cups.  Once they are cool,
frost them with chocolate frosting,
and add the Mandrakes.
Garnish the frosting with crushed
Oreo Cookies for the dirt.

The kids loved being sorted into houses!
The house ties are made from felt and yarn.

What's a Harry Potter party without wands and Hedwig?
I purchased the wands and stone backdrop (below) from Oriental Trading.

The witches and wizards enjoyed stopping by Gringotts bank for coins,
which they used to purchase robes, wands, and candy from Honeydukes.
The signs you see in this post are printables from Printyca.

The Honeydukes' candy station was a big hit.
I found the candy printatables from Printed Instinct on Etsy.

The cockroach clusters are made with crushed pretzels
and melted semi-sweet chocolates.

The house banners set the tone for the dinner table, with a flying snitch.
The Hogwart crest is by Geijvon Taen.
The house banners are printables from  TheDesignDarling.

The Potion Class was hands down the highlight of the party.
The experiment used dry ice.  I was very careful to prevent kids from direct
contact with the ice.  There are many tutorials online for this experiment.

A happy group of Hogwarts graduates!

5. Double-Sided St. Patrick's Day Cupcakes

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!
What took me so long to think of piping icing on Girl Scout Thin Mints?
I'm going to do this more often for other festive occasions.

To decorate the cupcakes, you'll need:
Airheads Xtreme Bites
Rolos
Martha Stewart's Royal Icing Recipe
Green food coloring

Be sure to decorate the other side.  Enjoy!

8. Hot Cocoa Treats

Making hot cocoa treats is a festive
and easy holiday activity to do with the kids.

Simply melt semisweet chocolate, and pour it into square molds.
Garnish with sprinkles, and allow it to chill.

Pop the set chocolates out of the molds,
and insert mini candy canes into the center of marshmallows.

Dip the marshmallows into melted semisweet chocolate,
and quickly dip them into crushed candy canes.

Once all chocolate has set,
package them in treat bags; they make the cutest gifts.

You are welcome to download my hot cocoa tags for personal use.
Print and cut the sheet in half, landscape.  Cut both halves into quarters,
for a total of eight tags.  Fold each tag in half.

I added hot cocoa directions on my tags.
Heat up the chocolate and 8 oz of milk in the microwave.
Stir well, add the marshmallow peppermint treat, and enjoy!

Happy holidays!

9. A Little Library Celebration

Have you heard of the Little Free Library?
Its a wonderful concept to spread the joy of reading.
I had the privilege of being a part of a Little Library celebration
for Jakes Garden, in memory of a very special, sweet boy.

This charming library, donated by Jake’s family,
and painted by Anika Schneider,
is part of a lovely garden nestled in a schools playground.
Childrens books are exchanged and shared.

The library is a warm and welcoming way to embrace community,
remember Jake, and spread the love of reading to a new generation.
Wouldn't it be great to put up a little library too?

10. My Little Pony™ Party!

My Little Pony was around when I was growing up, and now the ponies have
returned with some sass, and my daughter is crazy about them.

Cutie mark cupcakes - here we go!  Making treats are my favorite party task.
Decorate them with rock candy, Dots Gumdrops, confetti sprinkles, jelly beans,
rolled and cut Tootsie Fruit Chews, and rainbow Airheads Extremes Bites.
Making the six cutie marks was creative-fun!

Have the kids help.  You can't go wrong with marshmallow pops.
Dip marshmallows in melted colored chocolates,
and garnish them with sprinkles.

A piñata for everyone!  I wrapped craft rolls with
printed napkins and tulle, and tied one end of each with ribbons.
Kids enjoyed filling the opens end with chocolates and candies.
They tied the loose ends
and were pleased to have their
own
piñatas to take home .

Pony Dress-Up Time!
The girls loved dressing up, and accessorizing with hair clips and rings.
Assembling tutus and pony tails to pin is simple and affordable.
Click here to view Martha Stewart's tutu-making video.
To make the tails, use colorful, fluffy yarn and tie them together
with some pretty ribbons.

Here's a cool activity to include the boys.
The children filled miniature jars with colorful jewels and rocks.

I found this My Little Pony™ bracelet charm kit online,
and it was a great party activity for all ages.

free My Little Pony printables on her site.
They were perfect for printing party favor name tags.
Visit Michelle's blog for more My Little Pony party printables.

If you have a My Little Pony fan,
I hope you find some inspiration here for your next party!

11. Lucky Saint Patrick's Cupcakes

Happy Leprechaun Day, as my daughter would say!
I underestimated how long it would take to make these cupcakes,
but they are festive and worth the time.

To make the rainbow cauldrons, you will need:
1 8oz block of cream cheese

Crush the cookies into crumbs, and blend them with the cream cheese.
Roll the mixture into 1 inch balls,
and chill them in the refrigerator for 30 minutes, or until firm.
While the balls are chilling, melt the chocolate wafers.
Insert a stick into the centers of the chilled balls,
and dip them in the melted chocolate.  Place the balls onto wax paper to cool.

Once the chocolate balls are set, flip them over, drop some
melted chocolate to the flat side, and stick three Skittles™ on top.
Next, dip one end of the Airheads Xtreme Bites™ into
the chocolate, and attach them to the cauldrons.

These are actually easy to make, but they do take some time.
Have the kids help.  It's a fun cooking craft.
The recipe makes about 28 cauldrons.
Enjoy!

12. Valentine's Crafts

Happy Valentine's Day!
I love holidays because they're a time when my girls
and I can work on some crafts and bake.

These gnomes are very easy for the kids to put together.
The trick is to skip the glue.
Use felt, foam, or paper heart stickers for cone hats.
Stick them onto hershey kisses, with the point facing up,
and wrap the hearts around the tip of the chocolate.
Place a small piece of double sided tape over the hat and foil,
and firmly press on the eyes and pom-poms for noses.

Beaded hearts are fun and they can be used in a variety of projects.
Thread pipe cleaners with beads to the desired size.
Trim the ends, leaving room to twist them closed, to form a loop.
Shape the loop into a heart, and finish them off as
bracelet, necklace, key chain, or pencil topper.

Instead of cupids, my girls and I made little love dolls.
You'll need a pipe cleaner, one small bead, a wooden bead for the head,
and tulle ribbon (5 1/2" width) for the pom-pom body and hair (optional).

Fold the pipe cleaner in half, and from the open end,
thread the small bead towards the bend, leaving enough room to form
a loop or heart.  Twist the pipe cleaner a few times to lock in place.
For the pom pom body, cut 5 feet of tulle and wrap it around your palm.
Tie the center tightly together, and cut both loop ends.
To add hair, repeat the same steps with a smaller tulle wrap.

Twist the pipe cleaner around the hair tulle and fluff the ends to form
a pom-pom.  Thread the wooden bead, and then add the body tulle.
Twist the pipe cleaner tightly round the body to lock in place, and fluff.
Trim and tuck the ends.  Using color pencils, draw the face.

Have a wonderful Valentine's Day!

13. Happy New Year 2015!

I can't believe it's New Year's Eve!
I woke up this morning thinking I need to start on some fun craft
activities with the girls, to prepare for our celebration.

I pulled out my craft box and found beads, bells, pipe cleaners,
pencils, and New Year's toys saved from last year.
Perfect!

To make the sparkly crown, you need four pipe cleaners and
some beads.  Twist two pipe cleaners together for the base of the crown.
Thread colorful beads through the remaining two pipe cleaners,
and twist them around the base and make loops.
Have fun with this, and create your own design. You can't go wrong.

My girls and I are calling this a noise-maker wishing wand.
It's easier to manage if you thread the bells and beads first, and then
bend the pipe cleaner into a star shape - or any fun shape you wish.

Tape the end of the star to the pencil top.  Twist another pipe cleaner
around the pencil to cover the taped pipe cleaner base.

Goody bags are nice to have.
I filled a zip-lock sandwich bag with a noise-maker,
horn, bell necklace, and bracelet.
Here is a pdf of the goodie bag topper I designed, if you
would like to print it out for your treat bags.

We are ready for tonight, and had lots of fun this afternoon with the crafts.
I love my daughter's "fireworks" crown.

Have a happy and safe New Year's celebration.
May this be your best year yet!

16. Books and Smiles for Haiti

Over the past few summers, I donated copies of my books to
Life Connection Mission, a non-profit organization serving the poorest
children in the Western Hemisphere.
It was very heart warming to see the happy faces from the pictures,
and hear about how the children enjoyed having the books.

Last fall, I started the program Books and Smiles for Haiti,
and invited authors, illustrators, and our children's book community to
join me in sending more books to Haiti.  The responses were overwhelming,
and the books were distributed to the children this summer.

Some books were given to the homeless shelter; many to the preschool,
1st grade teachers, and church supported by Life Connection Mission,
to be shared with the community's children.

On one special occasion, children were invited for dinner with the goal of taking
pictures to encourage people back here in the U.S. to sponsor them,
and help send them to school.  The children received small gifts,
and the younger ones were given picture books.  I was thrilled to have the
opportunity to sponsor a little girl close to my youngest daughter's age.

I am thankful for the generosity and kindness of our contributors,
Life Connection Mission, and the amazing people who spent their summer
in Haiti for their endless hard work and dedication.

Thank you Life Connection Mission, for sharing these wonderful photos.

17. A Summer Frozen Party!

Ever since Frozen hit the big screen, it's been a favorite "everything" with
my daughter.  The songs, books, dolls, clothes - you get the picture.
It was no surprise she asked for a Frozen birthday celebration, and after a long
winter this year, snowflakes were the last thing I wanted to think about.

Voila!  A Frozen party without a single snowflake!
Instead of a snow garnished cake, I went with magical wintry breeze cupcakes.

I melted and piped white chocolate swirls and embellished them
with clear sugar sprinkles for an icy effect.

Making these treats was fun!
The girls loved the Frozen ring that topped the blue frosting.

The party wand favors were a hit, and easy to make.
I hot-glued tulle pom-poms to the bottom of clear plastic tubes with a white
fluffy pom in the center.  Fill the wands with blue and white Sixlets candies
and attach a Frozen ring to each of them; they snap on perfectly.
The cap of the wand should be on the bottom for easy access to the candy.

To make the pom-poms, wrap two shades of tulle around your hand
about 7 - 9 times, and tie the center.  Cut the loops and fluff them.
You can find great tulle pom-pom tutorials on youtube.

I couldn't resist including summer fun party favors too,
perfect for boys.  Fill small beach buckets with colorful chalk,
bubbles, and shovels.  I printed and attached this Olaf picture from
the Disney website.  My daughter loved her summer Frozen birthday,
and we are looking forward to catch Frozen on Broadway!

19. Away We Go! to Support the Asthma Dance-a-Thon

I had the pleasure of participating in a fundraiser event to support asthma.
It was fun putting together this cheery and colorful arts and crafts
wagon for the auction.  There are some creative ideas here for school baskets
and kids with big imaginations.  I filled it with Model Magic, Floam
sidewalk chalk, Playdoh and tools, water color, markers, colored pencils,
art paper, stencils, craft scissors, and a big sweet lollipop.

The children's energy were great.  We made Away We Go! themed crafts -
candy airplanes, floating rafts and personalized shape key chains.

I wish I could spend everyday doing arts and crafts with kids!
Theirs smiles are contagious.

21. A Leprechaun's Treat Bag

It's almost Saint Patrick's Day and my youngest is working on a trap
to catch the little green guy.  In the meantime, we are putting
together colorful treats to celebrate this festive day.

fill cellophane bags with Twizzlers Rainbow Twists™
small marshmallows for clouds, Rolos for gold pots,
and colorful M&M™candies for rainbow dust.  Have fun and enjoy!

23. A Wintry Valentine's Celebration

To kick off Valentine's week,
we celebrated the holiday of love with sweet friends,
sweet treats, and a sweet book and craft.

Penguin in Love by Salina Yoon is a charming story and one of our
favorite books this season.  Penguin is loveable, and the girls enjoyed
having him at our Valentine's celebration.  After a chatty lunch,
we read the book and each made our own Penguin.

How adorable are these back-pack clips?  The kids did a great job!
I love playing with Crayola Model Magic.
It air dries nicely and is easy for the kids to work with.

To make Penguin, you need:
Black Model Magic for the body.
Orange Model Magic for the scarf.
White Model Magic for the belly and nose.
Two black beads for the eyes
Yellow pipe cleaners for the feet.
Back pack clips

After molding Penguin with model magic, fold a six inch pipe cleaner
in half and string it through the ring of a back-pack clip, with the folded
part centered in the ring.  Pierce both ends of the pipe cleaner through the top
of Penguin's head and out the bottom.  There will be two ends sticking out.
Bend each end in half to form the feet; this will secure Penguin to the clip.

While our Penguins were left to dry, we celebrated with wintry treats.
I'm still practicing my chocolate piping skills.
The girls were tickled with the Penguin and bill cozy cupcakes.
You'll have to read the book to learn what a bill cozy is. :)

The iceberg jigglers were a big hit.  Kids love these silly, jiggly treats.
To make the blue icy water layer, combine two 6 oz boxes of blue jello with
two and a half cups of boiling water.  Stir until dissolved and pour
into a greased 9 x 13 dish.  I sprayed the dish with a light layer of PAM oil.
Place the jello in the refrigerator until it sets, about 20 minutes.

To make the creamy snow layer, dissolve two envelopes of unflavored gelatin
with a quarter cup of boiling water.  Set aside.  In a separate bowl, mix
a can of condensed milk with a cup of boiling water.  Add the gelatin mixture
into the creamy mixture, and stir in another half a cup of boiling water.
Pour the white jello mixture onto the set blue layer,
and allow the jello to completely chill in the refrigerator before cutting.

These snow ball goodies are powdered donut holes.

The girls enjoyed drinking milk from the frosted icicle glasses.
Okay, sugar sprinkles. :)

Author/Illustrator Salina Yoon offers these wonderful free
Valentine's printables on Penguin's Face Book page.
The children were happy to take home Penguin in Love Valentines.

I'm so happy the kids got a chance to get together this weekend.
They had a lot of fun hanging out and celebrating Valentine's.

Before bedtime, I helped my daughter clip her new friend
onto her back-pack.  She is all set for school.  Happy Valentine's week!

24. Snowmen Smores

It's so cold outside, and I'm ready to start thinking about Valentine's crafts.
Although, last week we had three snow days off from school,
so in the spirit of winter, the snowmen will stick around a bit longer.

When my kids come in from the cold, they crave hot chocolate and smores.
These snowmen smores are really fun and simple to make.

You need:
Marshmallows for the head
Fruit roll-ups for the scarf
White chocolate wafers for the melted snow
Assorted candies and chocolate chips for the eyes and buttons.
Hershey chocolate bars
Graham crackers

Assembling the smores is easy.  Start with a graham cracker square
and place some chocolate bars on top of it.
Melt the white chocolate and spoon some over the milk chocolate.
Quickly attach the marshmallow on top of the white chocolate
before it cools.  Dip the eyes, nose, and buttons in some melted white
chocolate and decorate the snowmen.
The melted chocolate will harden and keep the candies in place.
Add the scarf to the base of the marshmallow and
you have the cutest smores ever.  Enjoy!

25. Snowmen Winter Craft

Our first week in the new year and we are welcoming snow and
wintery weather.  Here's a warm and fun snowmen building activity the
girls and I enjoyed, and it does not require any glue.  We used Model Magic,
which air dries the same day and the results are adorable!

You will need:
White Crayola Model Magic to build the snowmen
Orange Crayola Model Magic for the nose
Color felt for the scarf
Pipe cleaners and matching color pom poms to make earmuffs
(roll the ends of pipe cleaner around pom poms to form the ear pieces)
Twigs for the arms
Black beans for the eyes and buttons

It's as easy as it looks. Have fun making snowmen!
