This is the blog of illustrator Donna Farrell. I still love crayons, construction paper, and Elmer's glue. My hubby and I have three very animated kids and their antics provide me with endless inspiration.

52. illustration friday - garden

I thought I would try something a bit different, but in keeping with a style I'm trying to develop. I spent a good bit of time yesterday looking into licensing and the
Surtex show in May.

53. william joyce

Spreading a bit of artist love!

Here is quote from author/illustrator William Joyce :

"You know, I hate to give advice because my life has been so odd that almost nothing that's happened to me can apply.

But if you really love to write and you really love to tell stories and you really love to draw, you just have to keep doing it no matter what anybody says. I sent my stories off to publishers for five years and got a good jillion rejection slips – and for all these different reasons: "you can't do books about boogers," "you can't do books about dinosaurs," "you can't do books about this." And you know, it all turned out to be wrong.

If you really want to tell stories, do it and don't be dissuaded."

Joyce was also featured in this months Mary Engelbreit Home Companion. Actually Mary has this article about the "Art of Business" which is has some good information as well.

63. Ooops in the workshop...

One of the new elves thought he would cut corners this year, buying a cheaper paint from a less then reputable dealer. Unfortunately he read the fine print a bit too late. Chances are he wont be in the workshop next year. I hope the little tot that gets this wagon, isn't fond of licking
his toys.

64. don't loose me...

"Don't loose me."
I still remember when I lost my favorite doll as a child. We were hurriedly leaving a store and she was left behind. Those tears dried long ago, but the memory lives strong. Was she as lonely and scared as I was?

I suppose I should finish this piece up and dedicate it to her. Although she had a bulbous head and beanbag body, I may need to update the sketch.... Read the rest of this post

65. mailer....

Thinking of using this piece as a new mailer. Piece rendered in Photoshop. I originally did the sketch back in June for the Picture Bookies Weekly Showcase and just recently got a chance to color it. I'm pretty happy with the results, it is a departure from my usual color palette.

66. sketch to finish

This is the thumbnail that I chose to work up to a full sketch.

As you can see there is much of the original sketch still her, just tighter.

Finished piece, colorized in photoshop.

67. pop goes the artwork....

Great exhibit on Pop-up Books at RIT. I have a new appreciation for the labor it takes to construct each book. A video detailed how pieces are die-cut and then hand assembled. Some are so intricate. The hands on exhibit featured everything from rough sketches to dummy, to press sheets. Large displays featured working mechanisms. The girls enjoyed the show as much as myself and we stayed for a couple of hours and thumbed through many books they had available. I think my favorite was Blue 2 by David A. Carter.
One Red Dot was the first of these "Art" Pop-ups and 600 Black Dots was just published. All three are amazing works of art, it's mechanics delicate and beautiful, it's design graphic and bold; much like the sweet and salty melody of a chocolate covered pretzel. I know what three books will be on my holiday wish list.

68. more t-shirts please....

Another t-shirt design, this one a spoof on the ever popular "Survivor" logo. My daughters class was able to loop with their fourth grade teacher. Fifth grade already, next year it is on to middle school. The teacher wanted to celebrate the loop with a reunion, but also have the shirts so they could wear them for other events throughout the year. The shirts turned out pretty good, and the center text isn't nearly as garbled looking in person, although when shrunk down it appears to almost vibrate, creating an odd optical illusion. Now that school is back in I hope to have more time to blog.

69. Nut Allergies

My little guy has nut allergies. ALL NUTS, that's: tree nuts, peanuts, soy, sesame, no mango's for this guy allergic, scary swelling allergic. Yep, he is one of the children in an ever growing epidemic. As part of a society that has quickly become safety crazed with car seats and helmets, gates and guards, monitors and alarms, one little nut could prove to be lethal. So as I prepare to send him off to preschool this fall I wanted to make some t-shirts for him to wear so his teachers can more easily identify him.
This is the first attempted design. I will post more as I have time.
