3. Aurealis Award 2010

The Boy and the Toy won the 2010 Aurealis Award, children's fiction (told primarily trough pictures) category and I'm very happy to show you the trophy, hurray!!!
Thank you to Harper Voyager, thank you to the judges Edwina Harvey, Sarah Mayor Cox and Tansy Rayner Roberts and a big thank you to Sonya Hartnett for her wonderful intriguing story.

Winners of the 2010 Aurealis Awards sponsored by Harper Voyager , were announced in a glittering evening ceremony held on 21st May 2011 at North Sydney's Independent Theatre and hosted by Garth Nix.
Winners across the thirteen categories and approximately 600 entries, represent the best of Australian fantasy, horror and science fiction writing in 2010 as judged by a panel of their peers.

And this is the review of The Boy and the Toy:

This is a rare thing in being a children’s picture book which genuinely feels like it belongs to the genre of science fiction. This tale of a boy and his robot, written by Sonya Hartnett and gorgeously illustrated by Lucia Masciullo, is poignant and clever, and worthy of several readings.

6. You save everything / Non si butta via nulla

Do you remember the discard character? The one with no-story? Well, I recycle him in a new way.

Can you figure out who is it? A little help: it's a girl and always wear an adorable red hood...

Vi ricordate del personaggio scartato? Quello senza più storia? Bene, l'ho riciclato in una nuova forma. Riuscite a indovinare chi è?

7. Our Australian Girl / Le nostre ragazze Australiane

Here there are the covers of the first four books of the Our Australian Girl series, by Penguin books. The main characters are four girls (Poppy, Grace, Letty and Rose) who lived in historic Australia between the 18th and the 19th century. Everyone has his own adventure and the four writers (Gabrielle Wang, Sofie Laguna, Alison Lloyd and Sherryl Clark) have done a fabulous job. Their stories are great and I'm sure every girl would like to read these books!

Well, at the beginning of each chapter of the books you can also find a little black and white illustration I painted.

The launch of the first 4 of 16 books is on Sunday the 13th of Feb 2011 at 2pm Readings Hawthorn, 701 Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn, Vic.

If you want to know more, visit the Our Australin Girl website.

10. Discard character/ Personaggio scartato

The first time this boy appeared on my sketchbook I thought he was great: a sketchy, crooked, fragile boy. Unluckily was not enough in tune with the story he wanted to lead...

12. Ron Mueck in Brisbane

Recently I visited the Ron Mueck exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane. It has been a very weird experience. For those who don't know him, Ron Mueck is an hyper-realist sculptor and his favorite subject is the human body: he likes to play with the dimension to rouse very strange feelings on viewers. Who wants to see the Exhibition, here is the link.

13. Black and White Australia

At the moment I'm doing some black and white illustrations for a series of books for girls (they say for girls just because the 4 main characters are girls, but I think even a boy could enjoy these books). The 4 stories are set in historic Australia and I'm learning a lot about convict ships, colonial settlements and gold rush. Mmm...this project is really growing my Australian culture...

This is a convict ship in 1810s. From early 19th century convicts arrived in Australia where they served their sentences working at the colonial settlements before becoming free men (consider that at the time they sentenced for petty thefts, even apple-theft!).

The first saddles in Australia were made as the British ones.
Later they replaced them with the so-called Australian saddles: heavier and more comfortable, so that cattlemen could ride horses for many hours.

14. Two brand new books!!!/ Due libri nuovi di zecca!!!

The Boy and the Toy is a whimsical and cool story written by Sonya Hartnett and published by Penguin Australia. The main characters are a boy, son of an inventor, and his funny but jealous toy.
I enjoyed so much setting up all the story in a fantastic lighthouse, full of wheels, pipes and clocks. You can say it's a children version of a clock-punk world.

The Boy and the Toy è una storia fantasiosa e ganza, scritta da Sonya Hartnett e pubblicata da Penguin Australia.

The second illustrated book is Family Forest, written by Kim Kane and published by Hardie Grant Egmont (Australia). It's a lovely portrayal of an extended family and it's full of hilarious word games, so that children can have fun and familiarize with modern concepts as partner, half-sister or step-mum.
I gave to my old-fashion parents the first copy I get, as a gift. Maybe they can learn something too...

15. Bologna Children's Book Fair 2010

Here I am, back from the Bologna Children's Book Fair, the "right" place for children's content. This year there were at the Fair also two book I illustrated (and I'm going to talk about them in the next post).
As always I have been stunned and amazed at the same time by the huge quantity of books produced, especially the illustrated ones...
I met other illustrators whose works I admired and I realized they are quite similar to me and they were happy to talk with me and to share their experiences.
Here it is a collection of different moments at the Fair...

my business cards and illustrations are here somewhere: can you see them?

17. Launch Time!

Ok, I've been quite busy, lately. I've noticed my last post was 2 months ago. But here is the good news: next Wednesday, on 17th of June 2009 there will be the launch of my first two books of the "When No One Is Looking" series (that means I'm not the author, but the illustrator!).
I'm really happy and excited about this. Everyone is invited (in particular who lives in Melbourne area). Just let me know and I'll send to you immediately the invite.

These are some pictures from the opening of the "Works On Paper" Exhibition at the KILN gallery. Thanks to Tom and Danielle for organizing the event and Vincenzo also for the pictures.

19. On the Swing/ Sull'altalena

(acrylic on canvas 40x50 cm - commissioned painting)

Sometimes I really like my paintings and I hang them on my studio, waiting the day of their departure. And I look at them. And I imagine the happy eyes that will look at them or the little hands that will touch them. Tiny big satisfactions!

Piccole grandi soddisfazioni!
