Often repeated, always true: I don't check out my own books on Amazon. I can't change the rankings, can't influence the comments. Anxiety fuels enough of my day. Why add, I wonder, with this?

But yesterday my friends at Temple University Press sent me this graphic with the news that LOVE: A Philadelphia Affair is now an e-book. They also sent the news that LOVE was (at least in that snatch of time) Amazon's top-selling local travel book.

Number 1, I thought. Number 1! I never get to be Number 1 (in anything).

Then, a nano-second later, reality crept in. How many local travel books can there actually be? Is LOVE Number 1, 2, 3, and 4?

As you may know, I keep a little feed of Amazon's best selling graphic novels in my desktop, just to see what's charting. It's usually the same seven or eight books—Klling Joke, Watchmen, The Dark Knight, Saga, Fun Home, Persepolis and so on. But this week, along with a strong week for anything by Scott Snyder about Batman, there is a new #1 book, and it comes with a whiff of the new: Fart Wars by J.B. O'Neil. O'Neil who has self published this and several other volumes in The Disgusting Adventures of Milo Snotrocket series, has found a formula so profound it's truly astonishing no one came up with it before: mix one part Star Wars parody, one part Wimpy Kid simple drawing, and 20 parts fart humor and you have something that is smelling, er, selling briskly in the Kindle format.

Jas Ward, an author who has self-published five books in the Kindle store, is challenging Amazon with a Change.org petition after one of her readers was unable to post a review of her book on the site. The petition, which has already garnered more than 11,000 signatures is calling on Amazon to change its policy.

The issue began when reader Imy Santiago, who is also a self-published author, tried to post a positive review of Ward’s book on Amazon but was rejected. After multiple attempts of trying to figure out the problem, Amazon told Santiago that they couldn’t post the review, “because your account activity indicates that you know the author.”

“I have interacted with a couple hundred authors over the past year; from events to signings, authors and writers rub elbows during networking sessions. This does NOT mean I know you personally,” she complained on her blog.

“Your current process of removing reviews that a reader has created to show their honest & sincere opinion on a book is not fair and cripples the review process more than assists,” reads the petition.

Amazon has been building up its Kindle business in Mexico for the past several years. Today the company has launched its first e-commerce store across the border that sells physical books.

Amazon.com.mx, a Spanish-language e-commerce site launches with millions of print books. Just as in the U.S., the online giant will also sell everything from consumer electronics and video games to personal health care items. They are offering free shipping on orders above MXN 599 (about $38 USD).

“Our mission at Amazon is to be Earth’s most customer centric company, and we strive to be the destination where people can find anything they want to buy online,” stated Alexandre Gagnon, director of international expansion at Amazon. “With Amazon.com.mx, customers in Mexico will find more of what they want – the largest selection in the country, low prices, fast and reliable delivery, all with a trusted and convenient experience.”

Amazon is making it easier to share passages from Kindle books.

Kindle already allows readers to post passages from books to their social media feeds, but a new update is letting readers highlight quotes and send them to specific people through more channels. And it is easier for those friends to read the content. Essentially a reader can share highlights and quotes while they are reading a Kindle book via Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, email, text, etc. and determine the recipient.

The reader on the receiving end can read a free book preview from various devices be it a phone, tablet or PC without having to sign in or install an app. The new feature is now live in Kindle for Android, and coming to Kindle e-readers and other devices later this year.

Just in time for beach reading, Amazon has revealed its Best Books of 2015 (So Far) list.

Amazon’s team of editors selected the list of 20 books. According to Amazon, the selection process included a ton of debate. However, the top book on the list was chosen unanimously: Helen MacDonald’s H is for Hawk. We’ve got the entire list for you after the jump.

Penguin Random House and Amazon have settled the terms of their negotiations and inked a new agreement.

Neither company would comment on the contract, which covers print and e-book sales in the U.S. and the U.K. The Wall Street Journal has the scoop:

Amazon, in a statement, described the pacts as \"long-term agreements.\"

Penguin Random House, which is majority owned by Bertelsmann SE & Co., said in a statement that \"we are still in business with Amazon, and with all our retail partners, and will continue to be.\"

Amazon is changing the way it pays authors royalties for participation in its Kindle Unlimited e-book lending library. The new model is less favorable for authors.

Beginning July 1, Amazon will no longer pay royalties on books that were downloaded and read at least 10 percent through the program. Instead they will only pay royalties on pages that are actually read. “We’re making this switch in response to great feedback we received from authors who asked us to better align payout with the length of books and how much customers read,” Amazon explains on the KDP site. “Under the new payment method, you’ll be paid for each page individual customers read of your book, the first time they read it.”

Melville House points out that this is unfair to authors as “an author with a traditional publisher will receive royalties on each hard copy of the book sold to libraries (or a percentage of the e-book sold at a library rate).”

The European Commission has opened a formal antitrust investigation into how Amazon distributes e-books.

The group will look closely at Amazon’s contracts with publishers to see if the terms are more favourable or to Amazon than to their competitors. The organization is concerned that favorable terms for Amazon may make it more difficult for other e-book distributors to compete with the e-commerce giant.

“Amazon has developed a successful business that offers consumers a comprehensive service, including for e-books,” stated Margrethe Vestager, EU Commissioner in charge of competition policy. ” Our investigation does not call that into question. However, it is my duty to make sure that Amazon’s arrangements with publishers are not harmful to consumers, by preventing other e-book distributorsfrom innovating and competing effectively with Amazon. Our investigation will show if such concerns are justified.”

Seattle is the most well-read city in America, according to Amazon.com.

The Seattle-based retailer determined this by measuring sales for all books, magazines and newspapers sales in both print and Kindle format from April 2014 to April 2015 on a per capita basis for cities with 500,000 residents. Charlotte, N.C. ranked No. 2 on the list and Portland, OR came in No. 3.

According to Amazon, Washington, D.C. residents prefer print books, and at No. 5 on the most well read list outranked Seattle for print sales. California had three cities on the list and Las Vegas lied the list with the most romance titles. We’ve got the entire list after the jump.

Amazon is looking to get kids into eBooks with a new offer called the Kindle for Kids Bundle.

The bundle includes an ad-free Kindle device with a two-year extended warranty from SquareTrade to cover replacements against accidental spills and drops. The device is outfitted with Kindle Free Time, a tool to help kids, parents and teachers track reading progress and earn badges for meeting reading goals.

The device allows kids to check out books from the library. A parental password is required to purchase eBooks from the store. The bundle costs $99.
