If I told you a secret cabal of the comics industry's most important players had been working behind the scenes for years to implement an important change for how comics are sold, your ears would perk up, right? But if I told you this change was to get expanded BISAC codes for kids and YA graphic novels they'd probably perk right down again, right?

Well, it appears I was a bit overoptimistic when I suggested that Hastings, the bookstore chain that just announced as Chapter 11 bankruptcy, owed Diamond less than $200,000. According to ICv2 got the updated list of creditors, it’s a LOT more and Funko, the designer toy chain, is in for more than $2 million: $2,589,509 […]

A few days ago ReedPOP announced a new "Fan Verification" system for buying tickets for NYCC. ReedPOP head Lance Fensterman told us the system was in order to combat scalping, but also to get more of a snapshot of who wants to attend New York Comic-Con. Getting "verified" is key because online sales is the only way to buy NYCC badges this year. In the past there were some on site and retail sales but no more.

The Comic Book Women, an advocacy group helping raise the profile of women working in comics, had a great showing at Emerald City Comic Con this year with several panels this year. This wasn’t a case of putting women on a panel and focusing on their gender perspective. It was about providing a group of talented women that could share their experience and provide insight into how to make it in the comic book industry—resulting in a panel for everyone. What secrets did they share on selling your comic book?

One of these “strike while the iron is hot” deals. Or more accurately, strike when your brain feels like co-operating. Last night, DC took the stage at this year’s Comics Pro meeting to talk about their upcoming Rebirth initiative, and was met with resounding murmurs from the internet. The reasons for this are plentiful, starting […]

It’s been quite a while since the last edition of The Retailer’s View, and there are several reasons for that. Almost all of them can be grouped under the heading “year one of a business is tricky as hell”, though a bit can be attributed to the emotional drop I encountered at the end of […]

Despite the jitters everyone is having about the Big Two's periodical publishing programs, as we reported the other day, graphic novels did pretty well in 2015, with sales up 22% in bookstores. Calvin Reid follows up on this sanguine report with an interview with Diamond Book Distributions Kuo Yu Liang, who says 2016 will probably be their best year ever.:

The Comic Den, a 25-year-old comics shop in Kew Gardens, is closing down at the end of the month for troubling reasons: “The new generation of readers is going online,” said Janet Vargas, who co-owns the store with her husband Luis, adding that the decision is not rent related. “We don’t have enough readers.” Over the years, […]

Based on the astounding social media attention to my last post about Ariell R. Johnson and her Amalgam Comics & Coffeehouse in Philadelphia, it seems you want more Ariell. So I am very happy to oblige with the above video of Johnson talking at the Ignite Philly event last fall. Johnson talks about her own life as a nerd, who was the black Thundercat and her discovery of Storm, the first black superheroine she encountered: "When I found out about Storm I gripped on tight to her and never let her go."

” BISAC stands for Book Industry Study Group (I know, I know)…”
To nitpick, BISAC stands for either “Book Industry Systems Advisory Committee” or “Book Industry Standards and Communications” (not sure which name is more correct nowadays…) to denote the subset of the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) that works to create industry standards, including categorization.
What might be nice would be to have a list of comics-specific BISACs?
Thanks for covering this important change, Heidi.
Brian – when you say a list of list of comics-specific BISACs, what exactly are you after? The BISG list the existing comics BISACs on their website – https://www.bisg.org/bisac/bisac-subject-headings-list-comics-and-graphic-novels. When the new codes become official in January 2017, I’m sure they’ll add them to the site as well.
