15. George R.R. Martin Has Not Finished Winds of Winter

GRRM at 92YGeorge R.R. Martin announced on his blog that he has not finished the manuscript for the sixth installment of the A Song of Ice and Fire series. The Wall Street Journal reports that it’s unlikely that The Winds of Winter will be ready for release prior to the premiere of the sixth season of HBO’s Game of Thrones show.

Here’s an excerpt from Martin’s blog post: “Yes, there’s a lot written…But there’s also a lot still left to write. I am months away still… and that’s if the writing goes well. (Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn’t.) Chapters still to write, of course… but also rewriting. I always do a lot of rewriting, sometimes just polishing, sometimes pretty major restructures.”

According to The Gothamist, “television viewers will be wholly ahead of book readers—we can safely say there will never be another Red Wedding reactions video-type occurrence again.” The first episode of the new season will air in April 2016.
