28. Game of Thrones: On Fandoms and Criticism (and crossing the line)

There’s an interesting trend I’ve noticed online, particularly in the last month or so as the show got deeper into its controversial fifth season: people love to hate on Game of Thrones. “Now wait a minute, Kim,” you might be saying. “Are you trying to say I have no right to hate Game of Thrones?” Of course not. You have every right to think Game of Thrones is the vilest piece of misogynist trash you’ve ever had the misfortune to behold. What I’m talking about is the hate-on: the disturbing phenomenon of people who attack media (and its fans) with gleeful relish seemingly for no other reason than: 1. It feels good to put down what other people love and 2. It gives the hate-oner a sense of moral superiority. Let’s get into it. It’s okay to not like something. I feel like this goes without saying, but I really,... Read more »

29. Bantam to Publish an Official Game of Thrones Coloring Book

gotd“All men must draw!” Bantam, a Penguin Random House imprint, will publish an official Game of Thrones-themed coloring book for adults.

The New York Times reports that George R.R. Martin, the author behind the A Song of Ice and Fire series, will oversee the creation of this project. It will feature a total of 45 illustrations.

According to The Guardian, “no details have yet emerged about the scenes the artists will be covering, but given Martin’s penchant for killing off characters, and the amount of blood and gore with which the fantasy series is drenched, it seems fair to assume that a good quantity of red pens will be needed to complete the pictures.” The publication date has been scheduled for October 27th. 30. George R.R. Martin is Working on New Show for HBO and Cinemax

georgerrmartinGame of Thrones author George R.R. Martin is currently developing three new television series with HBO and Cinemax.

Martin revealed the news on his blog, though he didn’t go into too much detail. Check it out:

Life is impossibly busy right now. I am wrestling with the Son of Kong (that is, working on THE WINDS OF WINTER), trying to wrap up a final round of edits and revisions on the twenty-third Wild Cards book (HIGH STAKES), developing three new series concepts for HBO and Cinemax, hiring writers and directors for three short low-budget films I am hoping to produce based on some classic SF short stories (more on that in the months to come), making my way through the Hugo Packet to prepare to vote, looking forward to opening JURASSIC WORLD at the Cocteay and to hosting a ten-author special event for the release of Steve Stirling’s new “Emberverse” anthology, THE CHANGE. In a week’s time, we’ll be flying off to Europe for long-planned appearances in Germany (Hamburg) and Sweden (Stockholm), en route to Archipelacon on the island of Aland, where I am to be the Guest of Honor…

31. The Revengers' Tragedy: Thoughts on the Fifth Season Finale of Game of Thrones

Yesterday afternoon, before I'd watched the final episode of Game of Thrones's fifth season, I read this essay by Aaron Bady about the show, in which he argues that it has overshot its natural ending point, and therefore no longer has anything to say: What has changed, I think, is that tragedy has become pornography. Not literal pornography, of course, because very specific forms of gratuitous

32. Game of Thrones Visual Effects Editor Killed by Lion in Africa

Katherine Chappell, a 29 year-old visual effects editor on Game of Thrones, was killed by a lion in a South African wildlife park.

Chappell was in a car taking photos of lions through an open window when she was attacked. Chappell had created a GoFundMe.com campaign to help raise money for animal conservation in South Africa. The New York Post has more:

\"I will be assisting rangers in tracking and monitoring animals, setting up camera traps, participating in poaching prevention techniques, providing support and assistance to veternarians [sic], and be involved in game capture and relocation,’’ Chappell wrote in the description of her fundraiser.

33. Entertainment Round-Up: Justice League: Mortal concept art, Spider-Man finalists test in Atlanta, Mastodon appears on Game of Thrones

mastodon-game-of-thrones-2

It’s been a slow 7-8 days on the entertainment front other than the few headlines that emerged last week, but here are a few items of notice that appeared over the weekend: (side-note: you’ll all be proud of me, as I pulled the trigger on a couple of the Hellboy library editions on Friday. I’d never read word one of those comics before, so it’s been quite the treat!)

– We’ve reported on it a few times, but yesterday, the team behind the planned documentary on George Miller‘s Justice League: Mortal released a number of pieces of concept art from the film and while none of it ever actually got used, it’s a neat peek at what might have been:

Comics Artist Steve Scroce, who worked on the film, also shared some storyboards featuring a battle between Superman and Wonder Woman, which you can see a sample of below:

jl mortal concept art

THR reports that Sony is still screen-testing potential Spider-Man actors in Atlanta, where Captain America: Civil War is filming and the new Peter Parker is expected to debut. Despite earlier reports that Asa Butterfield had locked down the role, it seems that its still wide-open to a few possibilities, including: Charlie Rowe (Red Band Society), Matthew Lintz (Pixels), Charlie Plummer (Boardwalk Empire), Judah Lewis (Demolition), and the previously reported Tom Holland and Butterfield.

Apparently, we’ll have an answer as to who will be filling the role by this week.

– This is totally not comics related, though they do make comics of Game of Thrones, so perhaps it’s slightly on-topic. But last night’s episode of the HBO series was incredible, and probably one of the best episodes of the entire run. One little trivia note that I quite enjoyed was a cameo appearance by Atlanta based metal act Mastodon, of whom co-showrunner D.B. Weiss is a big fan. Here’s a picture of some of the members in a scene that’s probably a little spoilery, so I’ll leave a gap…

In a previous life, I played in a band that had a practice space in the same building as Mastodon, it was amazing getting to hear them play during the week as I walked by their door.

Funny enough, this isn’t the first time musicians have appeared on Game of Thrones, in Season 3, Coldplay drummer Will Champion appeared during the infamous “Red Wedding”.

And Icelandic art-rockers Sigur Rós showed up in Season 4 during King Joffrey’s equally attention grabbing wedding:

I’m really hoping for an appearance by The National in Season 6.

34. Dragons, Library Holds, and Biking

cover artI finally finished A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin yesterday. I am glad it is finally over. I’m not going to do a full write-up of it because it is the fifth book in a series and frankly, I found it full of bloat and, while better than book four, still not great. In fact, I am not certain I will read the Winds of Winter when it finally comes out. Of course if people I trust read it and tell me how good it is I will probably cave in and read it, but otherwise, I’m burnt out. The thing has become so fragmented with a gazillion different storylines going on that it feels out of control and out of focus.

So there.

I know you have been wondering about my library hold situation and the resolution I made at the beginning of the year to keep my hold requests down to no more than five at a time. I had been doing so well and feeling so proud of myself. I got cocky. And of course I slipped.

Currently I have only one book checked out from the library, Lumberjanes, and one waiting for me to pick up, The House of Paper. But then there are eight hold requests. Only eight though, that’s not bad, right? One of them will be coming up to my turn very soon, When Mystical Creatures Attack! by Kathleen Founds. The rest I have a little wait for – I am 120 in line for The Buried Giant by Ishiguro but only third in line for Molecular Red by McKenzie Wark. There is a good time spread between the two. Granted the rest of my requests I am twenty-something in line, but still they won’t all arrive at once (Hahahaha!). So even though I went over my self-imposed five hold requests limit it isn’t terrible, not like when I had close to twenty hold requests out at once, right? And it’s not like I’ve gone completely crazy with new hold requests. I’m still in control. Yes, yes I am. I am absolutely certain of it. Yup. In complete control.

On a side note, I went on my first group bike ride last night. It is a women-only ride that leaves from a nearby bike shop. I was nervous, let me tell you. The route was to be rolling hills and since it is a no-drop ride (the group stops and waits for those falling behind) I was terrified I would be the one everyone was stopping to wait for. Since I had never ridden with other people before I had no idea how my fitness level would compare. Turns out I didn’t have a thing to worry about. My fitness level is just fine and I am not too bad on hills.

There were ten of us and I had a blast. Most of us had not gone on this particular group ride before so no one really knew anyone which meant no one got left out socially. And because of the hills I got to practice shifting on Astrid, something I haven’t done much of because I haven’t had to. And I discovered a lovely sound, the sound of a group of strong women on bikes coming up to a stoplight and all of us clipping out (unlocking our shoes from the pedals) and then clipping back in when we start again. I don’t know why I like the sound so much but I do. Maybe it’s because I am making it too as part of a group. At any rate, I will be riding out again next Wednesday so chances are good that unless the weather is bad and the ride gets cancelled, I will not be posting on Wednesday nights through the end of summer. I’ve got a bike to ride!

36. Game of Thrones: Thoughts about Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken (Spoilers)

Last night's episode was a real downer. My first reaction was, "Well, that was depressing," but as I think about and process it, I have some different thoughts. There will spoilers here, so if you haven't watched the episode yet, I recommend you leave now.

As a clarification, I've only read the first two books in A Song of Ice and Fire, so I can't discuss this episode in relation to the books. However, since the showrunners have made it clear that they aren't strictly following the books anymore, I don't think it's overly relevant.

I think the key to understanding this episode is the title, "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken." While of course that's the motto of House Martell, I think the producers are also telling us something. (And often the GoT episode titles seem to have more than one meaning.)

As I said to my husband immediately afterwards, "For an episode called Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken, there sure were a lot of bowed, bent, and broken people." However, on further consideration, I'm not sure that's true.

Tyrion and Ser Jorah are captured by slavers. However, Tyrion works his magic with a little help from Ser Jorah in the right places, and the two of them are now headed where they wanted to go anyway. Jaime and Bronn end up captured, but Bronn takes it in stride with usual Bronn-ness: "You fight pretty good for a little girl." And I hope that Jaime learned his lesson from the last time he was a prisoner and won't lose another hand.

A quick aside on the sand snakes: I haven't got far enough in the books to read about the sand snakes, but I had heard about them, and as a former martial artists and a fan of women warriors, I was very much looking forward to seeing them. So far, though, I have to say I'm disappointed. Although it's clear they can fight, they've been pretty ineffective so far, and there's not even enough character development for me to tell them apart.

I think that Ser Loras and Queen Margaery fared the worst in this episode. You might say Sansa fared worst, but more on that in a minute. Lady Olenna will use her considerable personal and House resources do what she can (although it is somewhat worrisome that Cercei sent Mace off right before implementing this plot) and while Tommen may be the Most Ineffective King Ever, he's pretty besotted with Margaery, so maybe this will wake him up. However, I fear for Loras. As the show's token gay character, he's been treated pretty poorly by the showrunners.  I fear that Loras won't survive this, but even if he does, will the showrunners let him become, as the article I linked above says, “a knight and a son of House Tyrell, who happens to be gay" or will he continue to just be "the gay character"?

Finally, I want to talk about the most talked about scene of the episode: Ramsey Bolton's wedding night rape of Sansa. The scene was vile and repulsive, and like everyone else, I was hoping that Stannis would arrive in time to stop the travesty. Viscerally and emotionally I hate it. But on thinking about it, I don't believe that Sansa was as much a victim as she appeared to be. As awful as it was, Sansa made the choice to go through with this wedding.  While Littlefinger may be using her for his own ends, his talk with her about using the situation to regain her birthright seems to have resonated with her.

Remember that this isn't Sansa's first experience with a sadist. This is not the young Sansa with dreams of a fairy tale wedding. This is an older, wiser, more experienced Sansa who has survived Joffrey and Cercei and knows the worst that humans are capable of. This Sansa is a survivor. And thanks to Myranda's attempts at manipulation, she has some idea of what she's getting into. She has options - she knows she could have lit a candle at the top of the broken tower. But she chooses to go through with it for the sake of her birthright, her people, and hopefully for a chance to avenge her family. And Sansa knows as well as anyone that an unconsummated marriage can be annulled, so she endures the rape - with a witness even - to cement her place at Winterfell. When Sansa tells Myranda, "I'm Sansa Stark of Winterfell and you don't frighten me," I have to think that in her mind she was saying that to Ramsey as well. I hope that somewhere not to far down the road, Sansa will stick a dagger in Ramsey. I also think that alternating Sansa's scenes with Arya's was intentional. Even though their roads are very different, they are both in the process of becoming someone else.

Was the scene gratuitous and unnecessary? Maybe, I'm not sure. It does seem like GoT has a disturbing pattern of violence against women, but then GoT has plenty of disturbing violence overall, and yet I still watch it. I'm not sure if this scene was any worse than what the rest of Sansa's family has been subjected to, not to mention many other characters. You want to talk about horrifying? One of the most horrifying things to me was Theon's killing and burning the miller's sons as stand-ins for Bran and Rickon. Theon in turn was the victim of horrifying violence by Ramsey. It broke Theon, but I don't think that Ramsey will break Sansa in the same way.

Personally, I hate the prison that most women in Westeros are forced into. For most, with some notable exceptions, marriage is their only option, most likely a marriage not of their own choosing. As much as we hate Cersei, Queen of Manipulators, we also have to remember that as a young woman she was forced into marriage with Robert Baratheon. But although I hate it, it's also a reflection of the life that many, if not most, women throughout history have been forced to lead. Violence against women is a reality; should we pretend that it doesn't exist?

When we talk about strong female characters in books and movies, we're usually talking about women warriors or leaders of some type. But I think it takes a particular strength to endure rape, forced marriage, or other violences perpetrated against women and to survive, to live, and to move forward. In our outrage and our disgust, in characterizing Sansa merely as a victim, I fear that we are missing the point that Sansa Stark is one of the strongest characters on the show.

38. Jon Snow Sparks Chatter On Social Media

Jon Snow - Game of ThronesIn anticipation of the season five premiere episode, Game of Thrones fans chatted up a storm on social media. SocialTimes reports that Jon Snow was the character that received the most mentions online over the weekend.

Jon Snow has always been an enigmatic figure for A Song of Ice and Fire readers because of the speculation on his true parentage. Neither George R.R. Martin’s books nor the HBO show have divulged the answer to this mystery, but many subscribe to a popular theory known as \"R+L=J.\"

According to Synthesio, a global social intelligence platform, other residents of Westeros who also got people buzzing include Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and Arya Stark. Who’s your favorite character from this story?

40. George R.R. Martin Posts New Excerpt From The Winds of Winter

George R.R. Martin PhotoAuthor George R.R. Martin has posted a new excerpt from The Winds of Winter.

Mashable reports that this piece “is told from the perspective of Sansa Stark, who is currently in hiding as Petyr Baelish (a.k.a. Littlefinger)’s bastard daughter Alayne Stone.” According to Martin’s blog post, he would have shared this excerpt on April 1st, but he “did not want it mistaken for an April Fool’s joke.”

Back in February 2015, Martin confirmed that the full book, the sixth installment of the A Song of Ice & Fire series, will not be published at any point during this year. Perhaps this new snippet will help his legions of fans (who love both the books and the Game of Thrones HBO show) better cope with the wait.

42. Walking The Game Beat: Arkham Knight, Mortal Kombat, Halo, Game of Thrones

7fd3ea97-87fe-453c-8fee-15d4ee229ed9._V309946528_

Batman: Arkham Knight is already one of 2015’s most anticipated games. It looks like fever has climbed a few degrees. A listing on Amazon suggests the Harley Quinn DLC bonus may contain more than previously thought. “For the first time in the Arkham series take on the role of Joker’s psychotic side-kick Harley Quinn and wreak havoc inside the Blüdhaven Police Department,” the description read. “With this exclusive Story Pack experience events in the lead-up to Arkham Knight as you infiltrate Blüdhaven to rescue your partner in crime: Poison Ivy. Delve deep into Harley’s demented nature and utilize her devastating baseball bat to smash, crash and bash your way to a friend very much in need.” Gamestop already has the Red Hood story DLC as a pre-order exclusive and this Harley Quinn DLC looks to be available at other retailers. PlayStation owners will receive a console exclusive Scarecrow Nightmare DLC that was announced in December at PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas.

In addition to all that, today a new 8min gameplay video was released. While it doesn’t show much about the game we don’t already know, it does give clues to the Scarecrow’s plan and shows off how truly next-gen this title looks in action.

In the category of not-so-good Batman: Arkham Knight news, a statement was released officially pushing back the game’s release date from 6/2/15-6/23/15. While it’s only a three week delay, seeing new footage makes it feel like another three years. The move was most likely made to capitalize on a potential bump coming out of the industry trade show E3 in Los Angeles in early June. Which makes sense from a promotional stand point. Why have only one week in the spotlight before the show when you could be the first blockbuster game coming out of the biggest video game sales pitch in the world?

Batman: Arkham Knight and its DLC are in stores June 23 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Currently DC Comics digital is releasing a lead-in digital comic. Available every Friday, Batman: Arkham Knight the comic is written by Peter Tomasi and picks up right after the events of Joker’s demise in Arkham City.

Also coming from WB Interactive is Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat X. This week the studio confirmed one of film’s most infamous game hunters, the Predator, would be a playable character in the game as part of the Kombat Pack DLC which includes additional fighters and alternate costumes. As long as we’re putting in Predator content a Danny Glover would be sweet. Regardless, the alien hunter is available as part of either the $99 special edition version of the game or the DLC can be purchased as a separate bundle for $30. It will be available when the game launches on April 14. Jason Voorhees was also previously teased and confirmed along with the returning Liu Kang.

Mortal Kombat X (2015-) 012-022

Currently DC Comics is also publishing a lead-in digital comic book series titled: Mortal Kombat X. If the characters who appear in the book are any indication of who we’ll see when the game is released today could have been an announcement for the Outworld tyrant, Havik.

Telltale Games, the studio behind the game adaptations of Fables and The Walking Dead, have another franchise some of you might know. Their Game of Thrones episodic experience is set to release its third chapter titled The Sword in the Darkness. It’s available for download this Tuesday March 24 for PC owners, and PlayStation owners in the US. On March 25, Xbox owners everywhere and PS owners in the rest of the world will be able to access the next chapter in the Forresters’ story. Finally, March 26 will see iOS and Android devices get the game. Individually each episode cost $4.99 or season pass options are available on some platforms.

Check out the full trailer below to catch you up on events so far.

Currently the developer is also in the middle of their Tales From the Borderlands adaptation while getting set to release a new episodic story series based on the popular Minecraft. Telltale Games also teased follow ups to Walking Dead including a pre season 3 game much like The Walking Dead: 400 Days came before The Walking Dead: Season 2.

What are your thoughts on the latest Arkham Knight news? Have you played Telltale’s GOT?

43. Game of Thrones Series Will Spoil Books

Game of Thrones will end at the same point in the story that the books end. However the story line will be revealed on TV before the final book comes out, the show’s co-creators revealed in a talk at Oxford Union, which we have embedded above.

Here is what the show’s co-creator David Benioff said during the talk.

Luckily, we’ve been talking about this with George for a long time, ever since we saw this could happen, and we know where things are heading. And so we’ll eventually, basically, meet up at pretty much the same place where George is going; there might be a few deviations along the route, but we’re heading towards the same destination. I kind of wish that there were some things we didn’t have to spoil, but we’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. The show must go on. . .and that’s what we’re going to do.

49. Game of Thrones May End Before A Song of Ice & Fire

Poor George R.R. Martin has endured constant hounding from his fans to finish writing A Song of Ice & Fire. The eager readers are not the only ones who are playing the waiting game.

The creatives and cast members behind the Game of Thrones HBO series will go into the new season blind because the story of the adaptation has now caught up to the material featured in Martin’s book series. The author has already revealed that some of characters who are not yet dead in the books may make an early exit on the TV show.

In the video embedded above, several of the Game of Thrones actors and actresses sat for interviews to discuss the fates of their characters. Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark, thinks that the direction of the show “will be the most ambiguous thing ever.” Liam Cunningham, who plays Sir Devos Seaworth, foresees that Game of Thrones will end before the book series. What are your predictions?

50. HBO May Kill Off Game of Thrones Characters Who Aren’t Killed in Books

HBO’s Game of Thrones may not go on forever. In addition, the TV series may even kill off characters that don’t die in the books, according to the series’  author George R.R. Martin.

In an interview at The Writers Guild West Awards with showbiz411 Martin revealed the news. Martin said that HBO has picked up the sixth series but we’ll have to wait and see if they will sign more. Here is an excerpt from the interview:

Yeah, it’s the hottest show on TV now, but will it be the hottest show on TV two years from now? Hot shows come and go and television changes, and I’ve lived through that before. I certainly hope that we get to tell the entire story. Because whatever happens with the show I’m going to finish the books, it will be seven books. But each of these books are 1500 pages long and they each have enough material in them for several seasons. I have two more books, the one I’m writing right now, ‘The Winds Of Winter,’ and after that the last book, ‘The Dream of Spring,’ so those will be the two final books. But we’re talking 3000 pages of material. How many seasons that translates too? That’s up to D.B. And David.\"
