1. Analysis: Bankrupt bookstore chain Hastings owes Diamond $1.6 million

Well, it appears I was a bit overoptimistic when I suggested that Hastings, the bookstore chain that just announced as Chapter 11 bankruptcy, owed Diamond less than $200,000. According to ICv2 got the updated list of creditors, it’s a LOT more and Funko, the designer toy chain, is in for more than $2 million: $2,589,509          […]

12. The Loot Crate Effect Reaches “Cartoonish Levels” on Comics Sales

Note: The distribution numbers used below are estimates, not hard sales numbers.  They’re accurate to the trends, but take the exact unit measurements with a small grain of salt.

Recently, Comichron released Diamond distribution numbers for May 2015.  To little astonishment at the feat but some awe at the scale, Marvel’s Secret Wars #1 took the number one slot for the month with 527,678 copies distributed to stores by Diamond, besting the distribution of DC’s April event book, Convergence #1, by nearly 400,000 copies.  Interestingly, however, Boom’s Bravest Warriors: Tales from the Holo John #1 took the number two slot with 502,737 copies distributed, besting series based on established properties including Star Wars #5 (146,850), Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #1 (131,839), and Secret Wars #2 (210,807).  In a world where even DC struggles to pull outstanding numbers on event books, which are traditionally considered to be defibrillators for comic sales, it’s surprising that a new title from one of the smaller major publishers pulled such a high distribution volume.  How did Boom pull it off?  Well, as Comichron writer John Jackson Miller notes in his analysis, “nearly 500,000 copies” were bought by Loot Crate, the largest nerd potpourri vendor on the internet.

BW001

According to the statistical analysis presented in the article, it is clear that the Loot Crate Effect has begun to not only change, but completely distort the direct market.  Comic sales were up by $5,800,000 compared to May 2014, but $2,500,000 of that was thanks to the mass order Loot Crate placed on Holo John.  That’s nearly half of the distribution growth.  In a superficial analysis, you might think that this doesn’t really matter.  After all, sales are sales, right?  Regardless of who is buying or who ultimately ends up with the comic, greater sales mean healthier publishers.

However, while Loot Crate is definitely helping line publishers’ pockets, they aren’t nearly as helpful as you might expect.

Where we don’t see the distortion is in Diamond’s dollar shares, which only look at the dollars it was paid — and there, Boom is in fifth place. According to Diamond’s dollar rankings, it sold 2.4 copies of Bravest Warriors for every Secret Wars #2 it sold — and yet the distributor made more money on Secret Wars #2. Since Secret Wars #2 and Bravest Warriors cost the same — $4.99 — that would indicate that Loot Crate got a much better deal from Boom at wholesale on its copies than retailers got from Marvel.

What this means is that even though Boom’s market share is rising in terms of quantity, the company’s profit margins aren’t improving enough to match that growth.  Not only that, but there’s no quantifiable proof that readership improves after companies dump large quantities of a single issue into Loot Crate’s hands.  October 2014’s The Walking Dead #132 is one of the best performing single issues of the 21st century with 326,300 copies distributed, over 200,000 of which were purchased by Loot Crate.  Meanwhile, September 2014’s sales of issue 131 are reported to be 69,810 and November 2014’s sales of issue 133 stand at 68,093.  There was actually a net loss of readership following The Walking Dead‘s appearance in the Loot Crate.

BW002

It’s harder to determine the effect that Loot Crate has on the readership of series that have their first issue included in the service.  Rocket Raccoon #1 sold 311,000 copies, over 200,000 of which were bought by Loot Crate.  Issue 2 sold 56,597 copies, which presents a steep drop in readership even if you ignore Loot Crate’s wholesale order on issue 1.  That’s not an atypical performance trend in comics, but it does serve as addition indication that Loot Crate isn’t really helping sales in the long term.

Like event books, it seems like Loot Crate has become another sales defibrillator– a way to improve sales in the short term that doesn’t necessarily help the industry grow in the long run.  On the plus side, selling mass orders to Loot Crate has a much lower production cost than the creation of a new event series, where you have to hire writers, artists, and saddle marketing with a lot of additional work.  With Loot Crate, you just pull the trigger and print more copies of the book you already paid to have made anyways.  Unfortunately, this new method doesn’t seem to pad profits nearly as much as event books do.

13. Exclusive: Titan’s Doctor Who Comics Day poster art from series artist Neil Edwards

The folks at Titan are really teasing their upcoming three four Doctor crossover story line from Hugo-nominated Who writer Paul Cornell, slated for release on August 12 ahead of their second annual Doctor Who Comics Day on August 15. On Monday, Diamond revealed the poster art to advertise the upcoming Doctor Who Comics Day event to their retailers. 14. Mark Hamill promotes Free Comic Book Day in a video

Every few years Diamond lines up a celebrity spokesperson for Free Comic Book Day and this year its Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, who is an admitted “lifelong comic book fan.” I found this one persuasive than the first one I can remember, a sun bleared Hugh Jackman.

Hamill is well known for his voice acting as the Joker and has been playing The tRickster on The Flash to good notices. He also wrote a few comics in his day, including The Black Pearl for Dark Horse. HE will appear later this year in Star Wars: The Force wakens, a sequel to what is perhaps his best known role.

This year’s FCBD festivities take place on May 2nd. A record 5.6 million comics were ordered for more than 2,340 participating shops. This year’s comics offerings were limited to 50, from various publishers, a decline from past years that was designed to streamline the process.

15. Books A Million Selling Variants Online and Getting DC from Diamond

Princess-LeiaThis may well spoil things for people trying to flip variants on eBay, but it looks like Books A Million will let you order (and pre-order) variant covers off their website.  And it looks like they’re expanding how many different publishers they’re getting variants from:

And that Princess Leia link is for the sketch variant.  Yes, BAM now has variants and sketch variants for some of the Star Wars titles.  A Marvel variant will set you back $7.99, but a sketch variant is $9.99  Start saving your pennies, kids.

There are a lot more variants available than just those, with Marvel leading the way in terms of volume.  On the BAM site, the publisher of the comics is always listed as “Diamond Comic” or “Diamond Comic Magazine,” amusingly reminding use where these are coming from.  I’d take as a good sign for how BAM’s doing with non-returnable fare that they’re adding all these variants and from all sorts of publishers.

And then there’s DC.  BAM lists a few DC titles online.  Here’s Convergence #1.  It’s not listed as being an exclusive cover, but it’s got “Diamond Comic Magazine” as the publisher and an ISBN number:

  • ISBN-13: 9781492472070
  • ISBN-10: 1492472077

Here’s the link for Convergence: Suicide Squad #1, which BAM has listed as a hardcover (almost certainly an error).

DC did not get back to me about why some of their titles are showing up on BAM’s site as Diamond titles, but since they’re not listed as variants, it’s entirely possible they weren’t aware those listings existed.

In the meantime, if variants are your thing, you don’t have to pay a jacked up price for the BAM variants on eBay if the title in question is still available on their website.

16. Dark Horse Now At Books A Million Through Diamond

IMG_20150214_144203The last time we talked about Books A Million and Diamond, I told you’d I’d been advised to keep an eye on Dark Horse and, sure enough, Dark Horse had disappeared off the newsstand sections at both BAM and Barnes & Noble in my area.  I popped in again today and Dark Horse did have a presence at Books A Million in the bagged and boarded section of comics shipped from Diamond.  Rumor confirmed.

Also of interest on the rack was a sticker on an issue of Daredevil.   The third-oldest issue was 20% and as you can see from the photo, they’re also pushing their discount membership. (If you buy a $25 membership, you get 10% off in-store purchases.  Which means you need to spend $250 to break even.)  That was the only stickered comic I could find on the rack.  It could be they’re going to start discounting the older stock, and this would be one of the first ones they received.  Could be they’re experimenting on different comics to see if the extra discount has an effect.  With only one sticker, it’s hard to say.

There happened to be a staffer stocking magazines, so I asked her a few questions.  She referred to the Diamond comics as not being from the normal distributor service and said they were trying something different and seeing how it went.  As for the discount sticker, anything like that would be by instruction from management or the distributor.  I don’t think she meant Diamond in this case, but it reinforces the impression I’d been getting that this comics initiative through Diamond is being controlled rather tightly by the BAM corporate offices and not driven by individual store managers at this point.  The phrasing also gives me the impression that this is still in the experimental stage and not rolled out as a standard option at all BAMs yet.  I wouldn’t call a 20%/30% discount remaindering a comic, either.  Even with the cost of a bag and a board, that should still be above their break-even rate.

IMG_20150214_144207As it gets into 4 months of stocking comics, it should be come more clear what this particular store does with the unsold stock, stickers or otherwise.  In the meantime, its a question of what other publishers start showing up in the selection.

17. Star Wars #1 leads Marvel to a commanding market share in January

Star Wars #1

Diamond just released its January figures and Marvel had a pretty thorough market share dominance,  41.05% dollar share and a 45.64% unit share to DC’s 24.18% dollar share and a 27.05% unit share. Periodical sales were down a bit from December but graphic novels were way up. Perhaps in the most chipper news, January 2015 was way up over January 2014, up 12.27% in dollars and 9.86% in units overall. Last year people were wondering if the whole thing was crashing but it was more of a sag.

All four Saga trades were in the top ten for the month if you’re wondering where the graphic novel boost came from. Thank you BKV and Fiona Staples.

18. Marvel and Image on the Newsstand: More Details Emerging About Diamond and Books A Million

bam star wars 219x300 Marvel and Image on the Newsstand: More Details Emerging About Diamond and Books A Million

BAM’s exclusive Star Wars #1 variant cover. Oh, yes, they’re part of the DM now.

When last we discussed what was going on with Diamond and Books A Million (BAM), it wasn’t entirely clear what was going on, other than there were comics on sale and they were coming from Diamond, bagged & boarded.  Interestingly, _nobody_ wanted to comment about their monthly comics being available at BAM.  Diamond would not give a written confirmation this was happening, although I got a verbal confirmation that BAM was a customer and the books were not returnable.

How often do publishers NOT want to tell you where you can buy their books?  Or a retail chain doesn’t want to tell you what they carry?

I did eventually get some information from that most notorious of informants, “the unnamed source.”  As usual, “unnamed” was in a position to clarify what was going on.  There are apparently around 70 BAM-owned stores getting shipments from Diamond.  All 23 of the “2nd & Charles” used book chain owned by BAM and 40-ish BAM stores.  This apparently started back around August, so it appears to be a rollout with my local store only coming online in December.

My source says 25-30 titles are being ordered and that lines up with what I’ve seen in person.  Most of the comics in the store near me appear to have 3 copies at most and as it goes into the second month of stocking the DM titles, there are multiple issues of some titles on the rack.  It’s a mix of Marvel, Image and IDW.  Heavier on the Marvel, if all the stores stock the same.

Now, going back to 2nd & Charles, I was informed that they were doing pull lists.  I called one up.  Sure enough, they had pull lists.  And I didn’t have to explain what a pull list was, either, which is interesting, since I’d consider that a DM-centric term.  I also asked if they could special order a comic?  The response was that they could make a request, but it wouldn’t necessarily get filled.  In contrast, I asked the local BAM if they could place a special order for me and they said they only got what the distributor sent them.

I surmise from those responses that the ordering for BAM is still fairly centralized, which would make a certain amount of sense if it isn’t completely rolled out and/or is still in a pilot stage.  (BAM didn’t return phone calls or emails on the topic.)

I also see BAM has their very own Star Wars #1 variant cover, so they’re being a fairly active participant in stocking Marvel.  Looked like a 10 copy order for my local, much heavier than anything else.

So, 250 BAM stores at 3 copies per title = 750 copies for anything they carry at such a time as it becomes a full rollout.  Maybe they order heavier on some things, maybe they don’t.  At what point the stores get the authority/ability to place special orders with Diamond is a very interesting question, since there’s no reason someone with an account shouldn’t be able to do so.

It may or may not be a coincidence that Dark Horse has disappeared off the newsstand at both BAM and Barnes & Noble in my area.  I’m waiting to see if Dark Horse turns up bagged & boarded at BAM.

I’m also waiting to see if Marvel, Image and IDW turn up at Barnes & Noble.  That’s pure speculation, but Hastings has a relationship with Diamond.  BAM has a relationship with Diamond.  I can’t imagine Diamond not trying to get some product placement on the Barnes & Noble newsstand.

The number of Direct Market comic shops is thought to be around 2600.  Adding in 250 BAMs bumps it around 9%, even if it’s a limited selection.  Barnes & Noble would be more like 750 locations.  We’ll see if it happens, but Diamond’s reach is getting wider with BAM and more places to buy is a good thing for anybody whose title gets picked up, although I suspect that DM retailers are not going to be particularly happy about this development.

AmazingSpider Man1 677x1028 Amazing Spider Man #1 and Marvel top 20 14 Sales in up yearAmazing Spider-Man #1 was the top selling comics of 2014, and Marvel the #1 publisher according to charts just released by Diamond Comics. And more importantly, despite early flat sales, the year ended up, with overall sales up 4.39%, comics up 4.03% and graphic novels up 5.18%.

Image ruled the graphic novel charts, with 9 of the top 10 books for the year. Similarly, Marvel had nine out of 10 top periodical comics, with only The Walking Dead #132 breaking the skein.

Despite being shut out of the top 10, DC was the #2 publisher in periodicals, fairly close behind in uits sold, and a bifurther behind MArvel in dollars.

Marvel Comics’ Amazing Spider-Man #1 was the best-selling comic book published in 2014 based on total unit sales to comic book specialty retailers, according to Diamond Comic Distributors, the world’s largest distributor of comics, graphic novels, and pop-culture merchandise.

Written by Dan Slott and illustrated by Ramon K. Perez, Amazing Spider-Man #1 marked the return of Peter Parker as the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler and saw his return to heroism after a year and a half of Doctor Octopus in control of his body.

Comics and graphic novels continued their upward trend in 2014, with annual sales increasing 4.39% over the previous year, as comic book sales specifically were up 4.03%, while graphic novel sales rose by 5.18%.

Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ science fiction epic, Saga from Image Comics was the year’s top-selling graphic novel and boosted Image Comics to the year’s third largest comic book publisher, with a 9.23% Dollar Market Share and a 10.41% Unit Market Share. Image Comics took nine of the top ten graphic novel spots, including all four collections of Saga as well as four volumes from Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead, along with Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky’s Sex Criminals Volume 1 at #7. Also among the top comics for the year from Image was Kirkman’s The Walking Dead #132, the #2 best-selling comic book for 2014.

IDW Publishing’s was the comic book specialty market’s fourth largest publisher, propelled by its licensed titles such as My Little Pony, Transformers, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, among others. The company’s market share was 5.69% dollar market share for the year. Transformers Vs. G.I. Joe #1, pitting the beloved Hasbro toy franchises in battle, was IDW’s top-selling comic book for the year, and the publisher had two volumes of Joe Hill’s Locke & Key among the year’s top 100 graphic novels.

Dark Horse Comics mix of licensed comic books and creator-owned titles helped the company to be the fifth leading comic book publisher to the comic book specialty market in 2014 with a 5.07% retail dollar market share. Two volumes of Avatar: The Last Airbender, based on the Nickelodeon television series, ranked among the year’s top 100 graphic novels along with Mike Mignola’s Hellboy In Hell: Descent.

21. The unbelievable world of 80s comics sales

COMIC american flagg 03 The unbelievable world of 80s comics sales

Over the holiday I spotted something pretty eye-popping on Tumblr—this comics sales chart from Amazing Heroes #49, published in 1984 and posted by Sam Humphries.

Your jaw will drop in amazement to see a world where American Flagg!, a daring SF comic by Howard Chaykin outsold Captain America, and Groo outsold Batman, Detective and Green Lantern.

It’s also a fairly dizzying array of genres, with Conan, Alien Legion, Dreadstar, Nexus, Aztec Ace and Evangeline in the top 100.

What the hell kind of bizarro world was this? Well as Comichron sales historian John Jackson Miller tweeted, it was Capital Distribution’s world:

…thus it’s not indicative of the entire comics sales world. MIller’s own archives only go back to the 90s, so we don’t have the exact info to compare with Diamond.

It’s still a pretty eye opening chart however. Indie comics routinely sold 50,000 copies, even ones forgotten today, and while the 80s may not have had the artistic wonderland and individual expression we have today, superheroes had far less of a stranglehold than they would have in the 90s. Of course that stranglehold was partly the result of the demise of Capital City Distribution, which had a more indie-centric focus. If Capital hadn’t been done in by the distribution wars of the 90s—leading to its acquisition by Diamond in 1996—we might have had a very different development of comics.

That said, I like where we are now.

22. New world order: The Walking Dead and Ms. Marvel top October sales

The Walking Dead 132 New world order: The Walking Dead and Ms. Marvel top October sales

The Walking Dead #132 topped the October charts, helping Image lands a 9.77% dollar share and impressive 12.28% unit share, according to figures just released by Diamond. While the zombie book led the charts before, it was for the milestone 100th issue.  I believe this is the first time a regular issue led the charts, most likely buoyed by the debut of the TV series for its fifth season and also several hundred thousand copies of the book ordered via Loot Crate.

Marvel again was the top publisher, leading DC by a comfortable margin. DC has two books in the top 10, as The Death of Wolverine weekly series performed well. Batman was DC’ss top book, followed by the pot-scented Harley Quinn annual. Lady Thor #1 also made the top ten, making this a good  month for female led titles.

The first Ms Marvel GN was the top selling book—man can’t wait to see the sales estimates on THAT—and the first Harley Quinn book was #7.Marvel matched DC with four books in the top 10.

Toon Graphics  led the books with the drop-dead gorgeous Hansel & Gretel by Neil Gaiman and Lorenzo Mattotti.

23. Thanos and Batman top August sales — UPDATED

Batman #34I’ll post John Jackson Miller’s analysis when it comes in, but sales for the year inched up, although down from Five Wednesday July. Image had more than 10% of unit sales, always a good mark for them.

And sales analyst Miller weighs in pointing out this was the first “Normal” month in a while.

After a summer of “bombshell” covers, anniversary covers, high-profile relaunches, and giant purchases by online retailers, August appears to have been something more resembling a generic month in the comics industry. Comic-book retailers purchased more than $41 million in comic books, trade paperbacks, and magazines in August 2014, according Comichron’s analysis of data released today by Diamond Comic Distributors. Dollar sales for the month were up 7.6% year over year, bringing annual sales to $344 million, up nearly 3% over 2013.

July’s sales, the highest recorded dollar amount paid for comics and graphic novels in the seventeen-year long Diamond Exclusive Era, were boosted in part by a fifth week to the month, by the addition of thousands of Rocket Raccoon #1 copies bought by Loot Crate, and by DC’s Batman 75th Anniversary covers, among other things. August’s sales appear to have returned to a more regular pattern, with Batman#34 taking the top slot.

Batman hunts a killer lurking in the shadows of Gotham City in Scott Snyder and Matteo Scalera’s Batman #34 from DC Entertainment, the best-selling comic book of August 2014 according to information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors, the world’s largest distributor of comics, graphic novels, and pop culture merchandise.

Marvel Comics had five titles among August’s top ten best-selling comics, led by Amazing Spider-Man #5 at #2. DC Entertainment placed four titles in the top ten. Image Comics had one title, The Walking Dead #130 at #6.

Marvel Comics was August’s top publisher with a 34.27% dollar market share and a 35.85% unit market share. DC Entertainment was second with a 28.71% dollar share and 32.56% unit share. Image Comics was third with a 8.83% dollar share and a 10.97% unit share. IDW Publishing’s dollar share in August was fourth at 5.43% and Dark Horse Comics was fifth at 4.73%.

Jim Starlin returns to his signature character Thanos in the original graphic novel, Thanos: The Infinity Revelation from Marvel Comics, August’s best-selling graphic novel and one of the publisher’s three books among the top ten. DC Entertainment had four titles in the top led, led by Fables Volume 20: Camelot at #2. Additionally, all three volumes of Image Comics’ Saga placed among the top ten.

The second volume of Jeffrey Brown’s young readers Star Wars series, Star Wars: Jedi Academy: The Return of the Padawan from Chronicle Books was August’s best-selling book. Also in the top ten were IDW Publishing’s Dave Gibbons: The Watchmen Artifact Edition at #2, Dark Horse Comics’ Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia at #3, and Gemstone’s The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide Volume 44 remained in the top ten at #4.

The X-Men and their foes, including Wolverine and Magneto, were sculpted in the 6-inch scale for Hasbro’s X-Men Legends Action Figures, August’s best-selling toy product. DC Collectibles had eight of top ten toy products for the month, led by the Batman: Arkham Asylum: Harley Quinn Statue at #2. Diamond Select Toys’ best-selling product for August was the Godzilla 1989 Vinyl Bust Bank at #17.

The cosmic heroes of Marvel Comics’ Guardians of the Galaxy comic book are featured in NECA/WizKids’ Marvel Heroclix: Guardians of the Galaxy Booster Brick, August’s best-selling game product, and one of the manufacturer’s five titles in the top ten.

24. Sales Charts: Batman leads June, but Marvel still on top

Afterlife With Archie Volume 1

It was the usual story for June sales figures just released by Diamond. DC led the single issue chart with Batman #32, but Marvel still eked out a market share win in both collars and units, although it was closer than in some months. Image was #3 with a 10% unit share, a continued strong showing for them.

Diamond also released  quarterly and yearly comparisons. Q2 was up over Q1 2014 but horrible weather probably affected that a great deal. Over all sales are still kind of meh compared to last year, but nothing drastic or worrying.

Two issues of Original Sin made the Top Ten, but not #1; perhaps a continued sign of the softening of the “event” books.

Afterlife with Archie was the #1 GN—given the quality of the work by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla that’s no surprise.

25. Diamond Comic Distributors Discontinues Its Toll-Free Number

DiamondBooks.jpgby Brandon Schatz

After closing on their main offices on Friday, Diamond Comics distributed a message to all of their customers regarding the discontinuation of it’s toll free 1-800 number. The specifics (minus Diamond’s actual phone number) are as follows:

The number is being discontinued due to the many online and email recourses now available to facilitate communication between Diamond’ Home Office and its customers and vendors,” said Diamond Vice President of Retailer Services Chris Powell. “Additionally, many retailers no longer pay long-distance fees as part of their business or cellular telephone plans, so we anticipate that eliminating the toll-free number will create little or no disruption for our customers.”

To assist with the transition, callers to the toll-free number will hear a recording that reminders them of the number’s cessation beginning August 1, and will direct them to call Retailer Services at XXX-XXX-XXXX.

While the PR on this is handled quite well, the fact remains that Diamond is making further cuts to an already threadbare service. I would challenge you to find a retailer who has gone a single week without miss shipped quantities or extensive damages in the past five years, let alone having to deal with the all to frequent practice of missing entire orders of certain titles entirely. Furthermore, while I would admit to communicating with Diamond more through e-mail than any other medium, this is more due to the fact that it takes an infinite less amount of time to type out my shortages and damages each and every week, than waiting for my rep to return my call – if he feels like doing so on any given day. Regardless, this is yet another example of the company foisting costs onto their customers, a business model that will surely yield them positive results as retailers die from the amount of tiny little cuts experienced by the company’s shoddy service.
