1. 2010 Halloween Highlights

We had a great Halloweekend and way to much candy. I hope yours was also excellent.

Finally some Halloween highlights. Meet the Ninja and the Sea Monster.  Does the above picture look familiar? - Connor seems to choose costumes where he can be a black blur in the pictures, although I managed to catch him standing still a couple of times.

2. Crowning Glory - Child's Felt Crown

A  birthday/princess crown for a little friend. A tip - sew embellishments on the first layer of felt (the jewel is also a hair barrette).  Buttons make great embellishments and felt pieces can be changed out, this crown has flowers and hearts.  I cased the elastic in ribbon to make it a little prettier and more comfortable on the hair.

3. Spy Birthday Party - Part II

All the decorations were black and white: question marks, foot prints on the floor, lots of homemade signs by E & C with warnings and cautions and "Spy Training Here", etc.  The floor was scattered with black balloon "bombs" tied with red string. Upon arrival all special agents were seated at Spy Headquarters, decorated with maps and more question marks.  At each place setting was an envelop marked "TOP SECRET" addressed to "Special Agent ______" (This allowed me to have a seating arrangement that worked well, with no arguing) Inside each envelop was - Sunglasses, a writing pad and pen and a "Spy Training Checklist".

The first item on the list was "Fuel" every spy needs energy to accomplish their mission so we started with cake first (plus the 2pm time is a good time for cake).
The other items on the checklist involved the games and activities.

SPECIAL AGENT TRAINING CHECKLIST
  • Balance - walked across a balance board that had "fire" vinyl window clings next to it on the floor
  • Memory - We played the "gossip" game, sitting in a line I whispered a secret message to the first agent, who had to whisper it to the next agent, down the line. The agent at the end said what they thought the message was and the differences brought a lot of laughter. I used silly phrases to start with like, "the red dog drives a blue truck" because spies speak a lot in code.
  • Disguise - We played a relay race and split into two teams,  Each team received a bag of disguise gear: mustaches, a hat, coat and camera/binoculars. The first person put on the clothes ran a set circle then passed off the disguise to the next person and so on.

  • Speed/Obstacles - we did an obstacle course with a tunnel and a game of follow the leader.  I masking-taped a ladder on the floor and each spy came up with a way to cross t

4. A "Royal" Birthday Present

Our other birthday friend needed a crown and wand.

I can't give a princess crown without a copy of "The Paper Bag Princess" by Robert Munsch. It is a story of a very empowered princess who goes off to rescue her prince in the only thing she can find to wear after her castle burns down - a paper bag. She wittily duels a dragon and discovers important qualities to have in a prince. A must read for any adventurer.

The wand is a plastic stick (from our bin of random things) covered in blue ribbon twisted around it and secured in place with dabs of hot glue. The star is a traced cookie-cutter onto felt (3 layers, blue on each side and grey sandwiched between. I sewed all three layers together leaving the bottom open for the stick. I glued many streamers of ribbon (a lot of cream that you actually can't see on the background) Added hot glue on the tip of the ribbon stick and quickly slipped it into the star.

The crown is made of 2 layers of felt, with the back elastic cased in ribbon to be more fancy (ends sewn in between the felt layers) I sewed the 2 layers together for sturdiness and also sewed the ribbon on the front. The rest of the jewels are added with hot glue (not recommended for little, little ones who like to pull things off and put into their mouths).

5. a "Super" Birthday present

For my boy's friend's birthdays I love to be able to give something personal and handmade if I have my act together. The boys get excited about it and help a lot with design ideas. This last weekend we had 2 birthday parties to attend. Our first friend needed a super hero outfit...

Super cuffs and a Super cape.

The cape is actually cut from the bottom piece of the Emmeline apron pattern, it has just the right shoulder size, cape angle and nicely curved bottom. I roll-hemmed around the sides, using a lightweight cotton and lightweight iron-on webbing to add the appliqué pieces then stitched around each shape. I added a wide grosgrain ribbon to the top for a tie-on.

6. Quick Cape for Superhero PJs

Dress up is always a hit at our house. We have a basic batman and superman t-shirt that we use for Pajamas. This is an easy, no-hem cape.

It is lightweight, thin cotton fabric and easily removable from a sleeping child so they don't get tangled up in it.

Pink the edges of what you will use for a cape. I measured the shoulders and then cut to the bottom at the wideth of the fabric, in a triangle, with a slightly curved bottom cut. If you fold your fabric in half lengthwise to cut it at least both sides will be the same...
Sew Velcro (prickly side on the cape) on each top corner.

Sew velcro (soft side on the pajamas) on the top of each shoulder right across the seam.

7. Batty

Please bare with me as I finally upload some pictures of our Halloween costumes - think of it like dress-up ideas...So here is C as a bat... he loved it, so I guess it was worth making 5 different sets of ears :) He pretty much flew everywhere he went and loved that he could tuck his wings under his arms. An already broken umbrella, cut in half worked great for the wings. I took out all the hardware to make it more comfortable. I sewed each half onto a piece of black grosgrain ribbon then sewed that directly onto the shirt, pinning from the underarm outward. Yes he is wearing plastic vampire teeth, which I liked because it slowed the candy intake.

Note: I loved playing with these photos in Picnik, I highly recommend an enjoyable way to waste time and create cool pic effects!

Warning: it could be very addictive...

And a last shot of my bat in the belfry (cell phone camera - such great quality)

8. Rollin' in Money

Quick tip to make the dollar store play money last longer - packing tape is the perfect size to cover the bills, I do mine all at once in strips and cut them apart, right off the roll of tape. It's a pretty quick project. Then next time you need money for a bank robbery, a restaurant, a kids wallet or a movie theater, it won't be a crumpled. ripped up mess.

9. cuff me

We have been having a lot of fun with wristbands - they are so easy and you can make whatever size and style you want - my boys are thinking it is great to be the designers and they like to mix-and-match wristbands depending what superpowers they need at the moment. They can be spotted wearing them at the store, post-office, Grandma's, the park, play dates and it took some bribing to remove them for church.

Here are some of ours (besides the superhero ones in the last post) -

This one makes the wearer invisible - the amazing power of orange stripes:

These are to strengthen my mommy superpower - LOVE of course, ahh shucks! (these are a shorter cuff, with only one TP roll cut in half)
There is no good without evil and these are our "venom" version.

And of course Spiderman powers like web-slinging, crawling on the ceiling and spidey-sense, always come in handy. I took these two shots so you could see different angles on the cuff.

Two great tutorials on wristbands at whipup and flipflipsandapplesauce

Ours are made in a similar fashion.

Slit the paper roll lengthwise and cut to the length you want.

I found it easiest to use felt to cut out the designs and I glued them all on a felt square measured to fit the paper roll. I used hot glue, for instant play, but felt is great to work with various adhesives.

I added all embellishments and brads to the felt before I attached the felt to the paper roll backing (again with hot glue).

I used four eyelets, two eyelets per side punched through the paper and felt. then I laced it with elastic string and a square knot to allow for easy on/off without having to re-tie.

10. I Need a Hero

A simple cape, a Mexican wrestling mask, an appliqued letter shirt - for super E and super C and some toilet paper wrist bands make great super heroes. The basic costumes were actually created for Halloween almost 3 years ago. After running to the rescue in dish towels for several months, I decided they needed something official. The boys picked a favourite colour and what their super powers were. E can control the weather and shoot lightning. C has "hot lava" powers (and yes his shirt resembles the logo of a fav hockey team). The wrestling masks were added later from a trip south of the border - how did the match so perfectly? the stars must have been aligned. The most recent addition to the outfits are the wristbands. They are such a hit I will have to have a separate post about them...

11. Dyn-O-mite!

My dad came through with the most amazing prop for the wild west dress-up.
Every old-school bank robber needs some dynamite...
Oh and some rope? I guess it's really the sheriff that needs the rope. Now if there were some train tracks around here...

So the dynamite's best feature is the light-weight, throw-able foam construction. All the supplies, if not in your father's garage, are easily found at the hardware store. Foam plumbing insulation tubes, red packing/duct tape and a little rope for a fuse.

Did I mention that dynamite tag is a new favourite game, you throw dynamite at each other and if you get hit/blown up you are it and get to throw the dynamite. It is awesome. Like dodge ball but with explosives...
