Benedict Cumberbatch (pictured, via) has been cast to take on the title role for Marvel’s Doctor Strange film adaptation. According to The Hollywood Reporter, other Hollywood stars who were being considered for this part include three-time Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix, The Notebook actor Ryan Gosling, and Academy Award winner Jared Leto.
Filmmaker Scott Derrickson will serve as the director for this project. Screenwriter Jon Spaihts will oversee the script; the first draft was a collaborative effort between writers Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.
Here’s more from Deadline: “Doctor Strange was hatched by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko during that Marvel Comics heyday of the early 1960′s. So the release date for THE MONSTORE finally arrived!
Dude, I was bustin’ out!
OK, I wasn’t that hot to trot. After all, I had been waiting for three years. So my excitement was more, um, subdued.
But inside, I was like this.
And this.
And this.
But I soon found out Barnes & Noble wouldn’t be carrying THE MONSTORE.
At first, I thought it was no biggie.
I would overcome!
But then, I slept on it.
Somehow, I didn’t break down.
With a little help, I kept it together.
In fact, I had something to say to that brick-and-mortar behemoth.
So I rallied the troops.
And people went to bat for me. For me?!
They’ve even told me funny stories about how B&N has been ‘splainin’ the book’s absence. (Yeah, they got a lotta ‘splainin’ to do.)
They said: “It’s with a small publisher.”
“It has to be reviewed first.”
“It’s a Halloween title.”
So, maybe this means it will be there in October?
Doesn’t matter, though. My peeps got my back.
These peeps, too.
Yeah, the response to THE MONSTORE has been pretty insane.
Oops, not Bynes insane. Stone insane.
And the fun has only just begun.
Because, remember…
Ryan and I would like to say “thank you” for visiting my blog this year. Now go rock the Auld Lang Syne.
Yes, it’s finally here!
Congratulations to my great friend, picture book champion and critique partner, Corey Rosen Schwartz. And a round of applause for Dan Santat, whom I knew would be the perfect illustrator for this story.
My rating? Five stars, of course. (And I’m not just saying that. It’s a rollicking good read! Just ask the NY Times.)

Special thanks to illustrator Kayla Skogh for the Photoshop help! (Check out her illustrative work, she’s amazing!)
My debut book is still 9 months away, but what I’m hearing from friends is that the promotion process is fraught with dilemmas and doubts. Yes, we managed to write a book, submit it and get it accepted for publication, BUT WILL ANYONE BUY IT? And what if some bookstores don’t even carry it?
Well, don’t worry. Ryan Gosling is here again today to calm your fears.

“Tara Lazar’s LITTLE RED GLIDING HOOD, with an icy twist on the familiar fairy tale, where Little Red is desperately searching for a partner in the upcoming doubles skating competition, to Heidi Kilgras at Random House Children’s, by Ammi-Joan Paquette at Erin Murphy Literary Agency (World).”
Thanks for making my announcement, Ryan. *blush*
It couldn’t have come on a better day!
This was a deal that required a lot of perseverance. It proved to me that writers should never give up on a story.
And I must say that I am thrilled beyond all beyond (is that even an idiom?) to be working with Heidi Kilgras, who has edited titles of industry legends such as Jane Yolen. WOWZA.
From the very beginning, Heidi had a particular illustrator in mind for this project. I hope to share that news with you soon because it’s pretty darn awesome!
Congratulations to all the writers and illustrators featured in PM today! In picture book news, Marilyn Sadler sold ALICE FROM DALLAS to Abrams Children’s and Susan Reagan sold PINGO AND PUFF to Hyperion Children’s.
And now, it’s time to PAR-TAY!

In 2008, I had the most nerve-wracking 20-minute drive of my life. My knuckles paled, my stomach gurgled, and my thoughts raced faster than the 35 MPH I could manage to clock on the highway. I was on my way to my first kidlit conference ever: the Rutgers University Council on Children’s Literature One-on-One Conference. AHHHH! Somebody help me!
Thanks, Ryan. I know you would have, honey. But I digress…
I knew practically nada about writing for kids. I had slipped the first three pages of my middle grade novel into an envelope earlier that summer and waited patiently for the response. Thankfully, I was on vacation for two weeks of the final countdown. It made my vacation go by much more slowly. I recommend this tactic to anyone who needs to wait—go to a beach, plop a lounge chair in the sand, facing the ocean. Or facing Ryan Gosling in surfing trunks.
But when the vacation was over and the car hit our driveway, I jumped out and dashed to the post office. Awaiting me was a thick envelope, and remembering the drill from college admissions, I knew this meant a “yes”!
So off I went. I was so green. (Although I wore a cute purple top.) But when the event was done, I blogged all about it. Hopefully my notes help prepare you for this year’s conference. You can review them all here: RUCCL 2008.
But Tara, what does this all mean?
It means that the RUCCL 2012 Application is now available!
And guess who’s your morning “Success Story” speaker?
As Miss Piggy would say, “MOI!”
Yeah, I was pretty floored they asked me. Trinka Hakes Noble sent me an email saying, “I hope you don’t mind, but I put your name forward as our Inspiration Speaker for the mentee breakfast. Would you be interested?”
Would I be interested? Are you kidding? Of course I am! Wow! Whoopee! Holy macaroni! Keeno Yaccarino!
Wait a second, what did I just agree to…? Pale knuckles and gurgling stomach again?
Well, I am hoping many of my blog readers will be accepted to the conference this year. Because not only do I want to see you succeed, I’ll need your help during my presentation. (Details to come. No, you won’t need to hold a barf bucket. Well, maybe. OK, don’t quote me on that.)
So polish up those manuscripts! You’ve got until July 2 to postmark them.
And if you have any questions about the conference, please ask away in the comments!

Following up on last week’s Ryan Gosling meme, I’ve got a green fellow with a few special messages for you.
So ladies, I know you love Kermit…but you should really watch out for someone…
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Valentine’s day is just about a week away, and we’re loving the fun gift ideas that companies are promoting for Millennial sweethearts. Here are few of our favorites:
- Toms has a limited edition pair of shoes that are covered with pink hearts.... Read the rest of this post
The internet has been abuzz with Ryan Gosling memes—there’s the feminist Ryan Gosling, Silicon Valley Ryan Gosling, and even a Ryan Gosling who reads young adult literature. Just like NaNoWriMo, I’m feeling like picture book writers are being left out of the fun. So, I’m jumping into the fray with these:
(Special shout-out to Julie Falatko who inspired some of these.)
But you know, Ryan is a little young for me. I need an older, more experienced man for my picture book meme. So I’m thinking about him instead:
Last night, I stumbled upon a new Tumblr filled with references to YA books, combined with...Ryan Gosling. Yes, indeed. For what it's worth, I think he's a good actor. (1) If this Tumblr gets people to read, I'm all for it!
So far, people have posted images recommending books written by Lauren Myracle, Libba Bray, Laini Taylor, Sarah Dessen, John Green, David Levithan, and more. There are also, of course, Twilight references, Harry Potter mentions, and other such things. I created this example, which references the fantastic novel Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You by Peter Cameron:(2)
The blog's administrator made this variation:
Reblog this, tweet this, popularize the Twitter hashtag #ryangoslingreadsya and pick up the books that these fun images are covertly recommending.
(1) Have you seen The Believer? If not, do!
(2) I very much enjoyed the novel, and I hope the film does it justice.
Actually, that little icon here is a touch misleading, but I took it since it talks about our first news item of the day. This l’il here ole blog got itself nominated for an Edublog Award, which is mighty nice. SLJ wrote an article about me and my fellow nominees, Joyce Valenza’s NeverEndingSearch, Karyn Silverman and Sarah Couri’s Some Day My Printz Will Come, and Angela Carstensen’s Adult Books 4 Teens. I’m in the Best Individual Blog category along with Joyce. Let’s face it, though. Joyce actually does discuss education on a regular basis (far more than I do), which is the point of the award as I see it. Therefore, if you’d stop over and vote for her along with my other nominees (preferably before the 13th), I’d appreciate it.
- Speaking of accomplished folks getting noticed, our own Mary Ann Scheuer of Great Kid Books (I call her “our own” since she speaks at Kidlitosphere Conferences regularly) spoke on Boston’s NPR show Here & Now about book apps for kids. Woman knows her stuff.
- Marjorie Ingall manages to locate two wall decals of infinite peculiarity. One is just weird. The other will undoubtedly be the bane of many a child’s life, possibly haunting them well into their adulthood. Fun!
- So what, precisely, is up with that The Graveyard Book movie? Waking Brain Cells has the skinny.
- Let’s chalk this next one up to Books for Adults That Look Like They’re For Kids. I am speaking, naturally, about Honey Badger Don’t Care by Randall. Oh, it may look like children’s fare, but if you’re familiar with the YouTube sensation (I only recently learned about it myself, so don’t feel bad if you haven’t seen it) then you’ve got the gist of the book. Long story short, it has nothing to do with James Odone’s far sweeter picture book Honey Badgers.
- It’s one thing to find out that your childhood idol and author is still alive. It’s another thing entirely to give that person the respect and honor they never found on his own. Marc Tyler Nobleman
Hi there Funky Fruit-ers - thought I'd give another random book and movie recommendation until we get our act together with the next official book review.
Book Recommendation: Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. Yes, I know I recommended her first book, The Hunger Games, in my last post but this is so worth it. I don't always like the sequel as much as the first book but this sequel was amazing. I dare you to put it down - I couldn't, and read the whole thing in one sitting. Warning: it's not the last book so I'm wanting to know how it ends and I have no closure :)
Movie Recommendation: Lars and the Real Girl. I just saw it this weekend w/ my hubby (via Netflix, my favorite thing ever) and we both LOVED this movie. Ryan Gosling can act like Peyton Manning can throw a football - he's awesome. I thought it would be a quirky, fun little film but it was so much more than that. It was a wonderful story of healing and human connection. Warning: my hubby and I are both psychologists which may have impacted how fascinated we were with the psychological elements of the story (we've both worked with delusional disorder), but I think that everyone can relate to the grief issues addressed. It's an uplifting, heart-warming way to spend your evening!
HA! Thanks for the laugh this morning. Hang in there and good luck!
You go girl! I read the blog and went back to the beginning and re-read it again. Just like the reader will do with your book.
You’re awesome, Tara!
Tara, This ROCKS!!! Just like you do, and your books. You are a great inspiration to all. And you always make me smile and laugh.
Whoa, someone’s been busy surfin’ Loved your fun post and hope that your sales really take off.
That is so funny! Way to keep everyone’s spirits up. (And your GIF range is incredible.)
Are all the GIFs working for everyone? Some of them are not working for me, although they worked yesterday during the preview.
What a wonderful message to wake up to this morning Tara hang in and keep being Tara, the positive voice in children’s literature. You influence more people/writers and children than “the mega company that shall not be named” influences them and you do that by just being you!
All the gifs are working for me, Tara. What a drama! Glad you didn’t let it get you too far down. Really, I think they’ll be knocking on your door soon, *begging* you to come into the Mon(ster book)store and appease the fan crowd. (Maybe that’s when you door the bustin’ out, door #swag thing. )
Most of them worked for me, a couple didn’t. How hilarious! I loved it!
So glad you’re overcoming the disappointments and making it to the mountaintop. Monstore is great and so are you!
