24-year-old online marketing guru Ryan Holiday has landed a major ($500,000 or more) book deal with Portfolio.
The book has the tentative title Confessions of a Media Hit Man, and promises to offer “an expose of modern news media and a primer on the dark arts and individuals that control it, with detailed and shocking revelations.” Holiday is the director of marketing at American Apparel and has written numerous popular articles about online marketing.
Here’s more about the author: “Holiday is media manipulator for notorious clients like Tucker Max and Dov Charney. After dropping out of college at 19, he went on to advise many bestselling authors and multi-platinum musicians … His strategies are used as case studies by Twitter, YouTube and Google and have been written about in AdAge, the New York Times, Gawker and Fast Company.”

Walter Zacharius (pictured), the founder of Kensington Publishing, passed away this week at 87-years-old.
Zacharius started Kensington in 1974. Some of the authors he published included National Book Award-winner Joyce Carol Oates, historical novelist Ken Follett, romance author Fern Michaels, and Tucker Max. In 2004, he realized a life-long dream of becoming a published author with the release of his novel, Songbird (later retitled The Memories We Keep).
Here’s more from Kensington’s tribute to the publisher: “Using his artistic sensibilities, he was the first to introduce ‘special-effect’ foil-stamped, holographic, 3D and moving image book covers into the marketplace. Among his other firsts, Walter started a highly-successful African American publishing imprint (Arabesque Books), created the first Spanish-language romance line, and in 2007 opened a West Coast operation, the headquarters of Kensington Media, LLC. a film production company.”

According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, eight out of the top ten titles on college campuses are nonfiction books. Decision Points by George W. Bush topped the list.
Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk by David Sedaris and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson were the only fiction books on the list. Life by Keith Richards and The Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 1 by Mark Twain joined Bush’s memoir on the list. Humor titles by Jon Stewart and Tucker Max also made the cut.
