1. Fifty Shades of Grey Film Director Talks About Shooting Intimate Scenes

fifty-shades-3001-225x300 (2)How steamy will the Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation be?

Prior to this day, fans can only speculate based on the contents of E.L. James’ erotica novel and the two movie trailers that have been released. In an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair, director Sam Taylor-Johnson revealed that the intimate scenes focuses on the “details, flesh and fingers and skin and eyes and looks.”

Taylor-Johnson felt that shooting a full-on racy display makes it so that “the mystery would be gone.” She does promise that “you see a lot, but you don’t have to see anything graphic.” What do you think?

4. Three years on. By C.J. Busby

I have just had the second book of my second series for children published. It feels like a bit of a milestone.

It's called Dragon Amber, and it's part of a multiple worlds adventure trilogy that started with Deep Amber last March. The cover's lovely, as all of them have been (thanks to David Wyatt), and there's nothing quite like holding the physical copy of your new book in your hands (or even clutching it to yourself as you do a little dance...!!) But it being the second book of the second series made me stop and think. It's my sixth book to be published. While I'm far from being 'established' (whatever that means), it certainly means I'm no longer a total newbie.

Which feels ever so slightly weird, as I still think of myself as a novice, pretending to be an author.

This business of feeling as if you're pretending seems to be something quite a few children's authors suffer from. (It may be related to the fact that very few of us are actually making enough money to feel writing is a 'proper' job, but that's another story...)

Anyway, I thought I'd take this opportunity - as someone who can no longer consider herself a novice - to try and sum up what I have learnt over the last three years of being part of the world of children's publishing.

1. First and foremost: other children's authors - whether well known, just published or still hopeful - are almost all lovely, warm, friendly and modest (and there are not many professions you'd be able to say that of.) Getting together with them, at festivals, conferences, retreats or book launches is a wonderfully affirming thing to do - and helps quite a lot with that feeling of being a bit of a fraud (I AM a children's writer - because I am accepted by all those other lovely children's writers!!)

2. I have almost no control over whether my books do well or not - so I should just relax and maybe cross my fingers occasionally! Being open to opportunities like school visit invites or festivals is fun and part of getting to know the publishing business - tweeting and face booking have been similarly good for getting to know other writer friends. And sometimes opportunities have come from that. But none of it has turned my book into a best-seller, and I don't think there's any magic way of doing so!

3. If I don't want to become mad and bitter, I have to try not to compare my book sales/prize nominations and festival invites with others - and must remember NOT to check the Amazon ranking of my books more than  once a week! There is a great deal of luck and randomness in this business and then there are the unfathomable whims of publishers, reviewers and the reading public (Fifty Shades of Grey, anyone?). Generally (but not always: see aforementioned Fifty Shades) it's Very Good Books that get attention and prizes - equally there are thousands of Very Good Books that don't, and which category mine end up in (even  if they were to be considered Very Good!) is mostly down to serendipity.

Oh - and marketing spend.

Which brings me to no. 4.

4. Publishers put serious time, energy and money behind only a select few of the books they publish. These books are plastered all over websites, magazines, 'hot new trends' lists, twitter, reviews, front window billing at Waterstones and W.H. Smiths.

In the absence of this push, you are lucky if your book ends up in a select few Waterstones branches, or garners an online review from a kind blogger. This is no reflection on the quality of your book - I've met too many other brilliant people with fabulous books who can't get them noticed to think it's entirely a meritocracy. Publishers are scrabbling to find the next Wimpy Kid or Hunger Games, and even they don't know what will trigger that response. Often it's something they have all roundly rejected as too dire to waste ink on (cough, Fifty Shades...) So they put money behind a few, and publish a hundred others in a kind of scattergun approach, in case any of them builds a following by chance. I've learned to treat having a book out as a bit like having bought a lottery ticket - whether it does well or not is as random as whether I win the jackpot or a £10 prize for three numbers.

5. So, finally, after a few years of trying to find the 'magic key' to making a go of this publishing lark, I've learned to just enjoy the moment: to hold my new book in my hands, and do a little jig at having pulled it off one more time. In the book I'm currently reading (The Blade Itself, by Joe Abercrombie) one of the characters is a Northman, hard, battle-scarred, always getting into more impossible fights. At the end of each one, he repeats, as a kind of mantra: 'Still alive, still alive...' I think I feel a bit like that about writing - 'Still there, still there...'

C.J. Busby writes funny fantasy adventures for ages 7 upwards. Her first book, Frogspell, was a Richard and Judy Children's Book Cub choice for 2012. The series is published in Canada by Scholastic and the UK by Templar and has been translated into German and Turkish. Deep Amber, the first of a new trilogy, was published in March 2014. The second instalment, Dragon Amber, came out on 1st September.

5. Anti-Porn Group Calls ’50 Shades of Grey’ Film Deceiving

Morality in Media, a anti-porn watchdog, has launched a campaign against the film adaptation of 50 Shades of Grey. The film’s trailer was released yesterday and the criticism comes in response to the release.

The organization claims that the film “deceives the public with a visually appealing melodramatic love story that romanticizes and normalizes sexual violence.”

Here is more from the organization’s statement: “A warning to the women lining up to see this film: There is nothing empowering about whips and chains or humiliation and torture. Women as a group will not gain power by collaborating with violent men. Women would be serving only as an agent to further their own sexual degradation, handing themselves on a silver platter to exactly the sort of men who want to use and abuse them, and take away their power.”

Here’s more from Deadline: “The singer’s involvement in the film has not been confirmed, although when some footage was screened at CinemaCon in March, her ‘Haunted’ was heard in the background. The handsy clip below has a remix of Beyoncé’s ‘Crazy In Love,’ but no recognizable shots of leads Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson.”

7. 50 Shades The Musical Goes on Tour

50shadesthemusicalThe musical adaptation of E.L. James‘ bestselling erotica novel 50 Shades of Grey has hit the stage. Written by Al Samuels, Emily Dorezas, Amanda Blake Davis, Jody Shelton, Ashley Ward and Dan Wessels, the show’s North American tour will open in Los Angeles next week.

The theatrical production is a parody of the book that takes things even further than the pages of the novel. The LA Weekly called the performances “ten times raunchier” than the novel. Check it out: “50 Shades! The Musical is a spoof on the sexual intensity of the book and the obsession many soccer moms have with it. When fuzzy pink handcuffs and lipstick vibrators are available for purchase at the merchandise table, you know you’re in for an interesting adventure to say the least.”

10. Fifty Shades of Alice in Wonderland’s Impressive Sales

The professional novelist who writes under the pen name Melinda DuChamp self-published Fifty Shades of Alice in Wonderland on Amazon, making some serious money by chasing the erotica trend. In an interview at Joe Konrath‘s blog, she shared her sales statistics:

Alice has sold 3560 copies in the UK, and 2540 in the US (plus 1275 loans in the Kindle Owner’s Lending Library) priced at $2.99. Assuming the loans are $2 each, Alice has made close to $15,000 in the last 20 days. That’s more than many of my advances … Alice peaked at #194 in the US, and #56 in the UK. It is currently #643 and #208. At its peak, it was earning over $1,000 a day. Things have slowed down, but it is still outselling all of my other novels on Amazon.

This publishing success story prompted Konrath to add: “if you think you can write erotica, now seems to be the time to give it a shot.” Have you ever considered changing to a more lucrative genre? (Via Karen Woodward)

12. E L James Is Publishers Weekly’s Person of the Year

Today E L James became the first author ever named Publishers Weekly‘s Person of the Year, an annual award given to publishing leaders “shaping and, sometimes, transforming, the publishing industry.”

As part of the award, James will get a cover story and interview in the magazine. She joins a list of winners that includes David Shanks, Larry Kirshbaum, Jeff Bezos and Len Riggio.

Co-editorial director Jim Milliot explained the choice: “From boosting sales of print books through bookstores to putting a spotlight on a genre that had received little publicity, E.L. James’ impact on various parts of the book business cannot be overstated … She is well deserving of our Person of the Year award.”

13. One Shade of Grey at Persephone Books

The Piccadilly branch of the UK bookseller Waterstones spoofed E. L. James and Fifty Shades of Grey, creating an eye-catching display of titles from Persephone Books–the sleek covers all decorated with the same “One Shade of Grey.”

We’ve embedded a photograph of the display above, it reads: “Oh the bliss of Persephone Books! Beautiful editions of titles by neglected female writers.” Persephone Books is a UK publisher that releases both fiction and nonfiction. You can explore their catalog at this link.

Here’s more from the publisher: “Waterstones in Piccadilly has become our new favourite shop ever – totally without telling us they have done this fantastic display – very many thanks to cathyreadsbooks for taking the photograph. For weeks we have resisted making comments about really good grey books as opposed to really not good – ‘One Shade of Grey’ is a far wittier way of doing it.” (Via.)

15. Dr. Ruth Endorses ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

Fifty Shades of Grey doesn’t need celebrity blurbs to sell books, but the great Dr. Ruth recently delivered an enthusiastic video endorsement of the erotic book.

Sex therapist and author Dr. Ruth Westheimer has posted more than 60 videos on YouTube, sharing tips and recommendations for her readers. You can watch her talk about E. L. James‘ book in the video embedded above–do you agree?

Here’s an excerpt from the video: “If this guy described here–his name is Christian Grey–if he were available and if I were much, much younger and not married, let’s say, I would also go for a night with him. Not because of the sadistic element (that’s not for me), but because he has a brain, he has a helicopter and he knows how to deal with women. He is very smooth and he knows how to make love.”

16. Stephenie Meyer on E. L. James & Fan Fiction: ‘Obviously, She Had a Story in Her’

When asked about the bestselling success of E. L. JamesFifty Shades of Grey trilogy (a series that began as Twilight fan fiction) Twilight creator Stephenie Meyer told MTV News: “Good on her — she’s doing well. That’s great!”

In the short video interview embedded above, the novelist admitted she hadn’t read the erotica bestseller, but wished her old fan luck. Even though the book has its roots in fan fiction, Meyer said James would have been a writer no matter what inspired her. Here’s more from MTV:

“Fifty Shades” follows the sadomasochistic affair of college graduate Ana Steele and dominant billionaire Christian Grey … Christian represents Edward Cullen, a brooding, self-deprecating and impossibly good-looking man with a few secrets, while Ana is an adaptation of the clumsy and shy Bella Swan. Without Meyer’s novel, “Fifty Shades” might not exist. “It might not exist in the exact form that it’s in,” Meyer said. “Obviously, [James] had a story in her, and so it would’ve come out in some other way.”

17. ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ History Excluded from Wayback Machine Archives

We published a long post looking at The Lost History of Fifty Shades of Grey, using the Wayback Machine to explore the Twilight fan fiction roots of E.L. James‘ runaway bestseller.

The Wayback Machine has since removed this record. We contacted Internet Archive for more information, and received this response: “The Internet Archive honors requests from domain and site owners to exclude page from the Wayback Machine at their request.”

Our original post still contains screenshots of some of the deleted content, but if you search the digital archive for those records, you now get this message: “Sorry. This URL has been excluded from the Wayback Machine.”
