Gearing up for Earth Day, Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Magdalena Ball are releasing a brand new collection of poems titled Sublime Planet. The collection features relevant poems by Carolyn and Magdalena that demonstrate the interconnections of the world around us, including life, family, and love, along with the growing concern for the earth’s preservation.
This is a beautifully written collection that allows the reader to pause and take note of the world around her.
One of my favorite poems in the collection is “The Giraffe:”
A tongue generousas my head he reachesfor me, barriers no matchfor his long neck, sniffsmy hair, kisses my face.He unawarehe is endangered.I unaware he mightbe dangerous.This poem is a powerful, yet simple tribute to a majestic creature that is now an endangered species. Can you imagine a planet without the giraffe?
Another poem in the collection that struck me is “Tipping Point” by Magdalena Ball: “
[. . .] you eat and eat through four billion years of evolution now held loosely by one thread. [. . .] The future waits impatiently your decision.”Again, powerful, and revealing.
Sublime Planet offers moving insight into the world around us and into a world that is in need of attention, and it certainly honors Earth Day.
I highly recommend it.For those who aren’t aware of what Earth Day is, Senator Gaylord Nelson created this special day in the spring of 1970. The purpose behind it was to make everyone aware of all the toxins being spewed into the air and dumped in nearby streams or other waterways by manufacturing companies.
At that time, there were no regulatory or legal safety nets to protect our planet, our environment. Senator Nelson took a stand and his cause quickly caught on.
The earth is our planet, our home, our responsibility, and we’re not doing such a good job protecting it.
Sublime Planet will be released before Earth Day (April 22nd). Keep a look out for it and get a copy as soon as it’s available.

This is week three of my summer book review Fridays. Today's review is of the Great Little Last-Minute Editing Tips for Writers by Carolyn Howard-Johnson.

What’s more important to a writer than words? Not much . . . maybe how to put words together properly, using correct grammar, weaving them together to create descriptive or informative content . . . but, we still go back to the foundation of every writer’s manuscript or article, every marketer’s content, and every copywriter’s copy . . . words.
Carolyn Howard Johnson’s latest book, Great Little Last-Minute Editing Tips for Writers, is a little 55 page book (or e-book) that a writer can refer back to over and over and over to find help with some of the most common word trippers.
In the Before You Get Started section of this book, Howard-Johnson explains, “Great Little Last-Minute Editing Tips for Writers is full of words that are trouble causers. They either sound alike or are spelled similarly. They are not arcane words that you will seldom have an occasion to use. They are not words the writer knows but still mistypes.”
Words such as climactic and climatic used improperly or misspelled can mean a rejection when submitting to the “gatekeepers.” The addition or deletion of that little second “c” makes a huge difference in the meaning of the word.
Or, how about the words: all together / altogether; demur / demure; one in the same / one and the same; and peeked / peaked / piqued. These are just a few of the word trippers added in the Great Little Last-Minute Editing Tips for Writers.
Listed in an A – Z format, the words chosen for this book are thoroughly explained with the aid of examples. This all makes for an easy to understand and easy to read guide. The author also provides two resource sections at the end of the book: Reading: One Editing Book at a Time, and Other Writers’ Aids.
I happen to be a fan of Carolyn Howard-Johnson’s Frugal series and have the Frugal Editor as well as the Frugal Book Promoter. They are a part of my writing and marketing toolkit. The author has done it again with the Great Little Last-Minute Editing Tips for Writers. She has compiled this much needed booklet as an addendum to a list in the appendix of her book, The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success.

In the world of publishing as in life, persistence counts. If course, there is no way to keep a book at the top of the charts forever, but if you keep reviving it, you might hold a classic in your hands. Or your marketing efforts for one book may propel your next one to greater heights.
I can’t tell you how often I’ve seen authors who measure their success by book sales give up on their book (and sometimes on writing) just about the time their careers are about ready to take off. I tell my students and clients to fight the it’s-too-late-urge.
Publicity is like the little waves you make when you toss pebbles into a lake. The waves travel, travel, travel and eventually come back to you. If you stop lobbing little stones, you lose momentum. It’s never too late and it’s never too early to promote. Rearrange your thinking. Marketing isn’t about a single book. It’s about building a career. And new books can build on the momentum created by an earlier book, if you keep the faith. Review the marketing ideas in this book, rearrange your schedule and priorities a bit, and keep at it.
Here are a few keep-at-it ideas. *Run a contest on your Web site, on Twitter, or in your newsletter. Use your books for prizes or get cross-promotion benefits by asking other authors for books; many will donate one to you in trade for the exposure. Watch the 99 Cent Stores for suitable favors to go with them.
Hint: Any promotion you do including a contest is more powerful when you call on your friends to tell their blog visitors or Facebook pals about it.
*Barter your books or your services for exposure on other authors’ Web sites.
*Post your flier, brochure, or business card on bulletin boards everywhere: In grocery stores, coffee shops, Laundromats, car washes, and bookstores.
*Offer classes in writing to your local high school, college, or library system. Publicizing them is easy and free. When appropriate, use your own book as suggested reading. The organization you are helping will pitch in by promoting your class. The network you build with them and your students is invaluable. Use this experience in your media kit to show you have teaching and presentation skills.
*Slip automailers into each book you sell or give away for publicity. Automailers are envelopes that are pre-stamped, ready to go. Your auto mailer asks the recipient to recommend your book to someone else. Your mailer includes a brief synopsis of your book, a picture of the cover of your book, your book’s ISBN, ordering information, a couple of your most powerful blurbs, and a space for the reader to add her handwritten, personal recommendation. Make it clear in the directions that the reader should fill out the form, address the envelope, and mail it to a friend. Wow, what a week. I can't begin to convey all the information, advice and tips that were zooming around this conference.
The Muse Conference is an amazing concept. I will plug it from now until next year's is at our doorstep. It is an astounding opportunity for writers to learn their craft, or a new one, get advice and tips, network, and move forward in their careers.
Before this week I didn't realize that Lea Schizas and Carolyn Howard-Johnson actually thought of disabled writers who can't attend conference in person and writers who can't afford to go to them when they considered joining forces to attempt this wonderful and arduous undertaking. This type of altruistic act is a blessing for those in these categories. It allows us to partake of the knowledge and experience of wonderful writers, authors, editors, marketers, and publishers. And, it gives us the opportunity to get professional critiques of pieces of our writing within some of the workshops offered.
But hold on, if this isn't enough, you are given the opportunity to PITCH YOUR WORK!
I couldn't be more thankful and appreciative of Lea and Carolyn's time, effort, expense, and the obvious caring that goes into these amazing conferences.

Yesterday, I received a wonderful award from Lea Schizas at The Writing Jungle – the One Lovely Blog Award.
I have to say I was totally surprised and honored. I’m relatively new to the business of writing and promotion so being included among Donna McDine, Katie Hines, Nancy Famolari, and Carolyn Howard-Johnson is thrilling.
As Lea mentioned in her blog, “It’s truly touching when some acknowledges your work…” I feel the same way.
Now, as an awardee, I’m responsible to pay it forward. For those individuals I choose, just follow the instructions below.
The rules are simple:

Two people I would have immediately chosen for this award is Lea Schizas and Carolyn Howard-Johnson. These two ladies definitely inspire and motivate me. Lea always makes me laugh, and is always so helpful; I don’t know how she does all she does. And, Carolyn always goes above and beyond. In addition, they work tirelessly to put together the Muse Online Writers Conference and offer it for FREE! These are two women I certainly admire and trust.
Okay, now for my choices of the women who inspire and motivate me in some way:
Kathy Stemke: Kathy is someone I can say, I knew her when. I had the privilege of critiquing her mss. I knew she’d have no problem finding a publisher. Kathy is a talented writer and I’m happy to call her my friend. It’s great to watch Kathy become all she can be.
Helena Harper: I reviewed Helena’s book, Family and More – Enemies or Friends and greatly admire her writing. Helena is a wonderful writer and goes the extra mile. She reviewed my book and posted the review in numerous sites for me. I truly appreciate it.
Heather Paye: Heather is a new member to VBT – Writers on the Move and she is only 15. There is an expression that youth is wasted on the young; well, this isn’t true of Heather. She if the most enterprising, determined, and enthusiastic young person I’ve ever known. She jumped into our group with both feet and does a great job as a host and a participating member. I’m very impressed by Heather Paye and pleased to have her in our group.
Next, I award this to all the members of VBT – Writers on the Move. Each member is talented, and they each give of their time and put forth effort to promote the other members. Being part of a participating group that is ongoing takes commitment – these members definitely have what it takes. I’m honored to be part of this wonderful group and they each inspire and motivate me.

We're back with Carolyn Howard-Johnson and today we’ll go over some of Carolyn’s books, but first I’d like to tell you about the two I recently read.
The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success is a must have book for all writers. It is jammed pack with information, tips, and advice to guide and help you with the writing process. From how you punctuate your titles to query letters, it’s covered. What I especially like about this book is its detail. Carolyn gives step-by-step instructions for things such as using Word’s Track and Find functions. It even mentions the word snuck. This may not sound important, but I very recently wrote a story for children and used the word snuck in it. I will be changing that word to sneaked thanks to Carolyn’s tip. What are the chances? The book also includes other great resources for making your writing the best it can be. The Frugal Editor will stay by my computer so it will be readily available every time I sit to write.
Next up is The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won’t. This book is such a great resource for promoting yourself and your books. For lack of better words, I have to repeat myself: it is jammed packed with great information, tips and advice - I mean that literally. It is such a pleasure to host Carolyn Howard-Johnson. What’s so interesting about belonging to a wonderful group of authors, such as VBT, is getting to work along side them. But, you only get to know them a little better when you actually host them. I found out quite a bit about Carolyn Howard Johnson while preparing this post. Carolyn has held many enviable positions, she is an entrepreneur, savvy business woman, and multiple award winning author. But, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Carolyn always demonstrates generosity and kindness even with her hectic schedule. She stretches herself and is not afraid to venture to be all that she can be – that’s very impressive and a wonderful example for others.
Now, let’s learn a bit more about this talented, and experienced author and promoter:
As a college freshman, Carolyn Howard-Johnson was the youngest person ever hired as a staff writer for the Salt Lake Tribune--"A Great Pulitzer Prize Winning Newspaper"-- where she wrote features for the society page and a column under the name of Debra Paige.
Later, in New York, she was an editorial assistant at Good Housekeeping Magazine. She also handled accounts for fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert who instituted the first Ten Best Dressed List, where she wrote releases for celebrity designers of the time including Pauline Trigere, Rudy Gernreich and Christian Dior. She was also a consultant for the Oak Park Press in the Chicago area.
Her nonfiction and humor have been seen in national magazines and her fiction and poetry appear regularly in anthologies and review journals. She has been a columnist for The Pasadena Star News and is now a columnist for Home Décor Buyer, a trade magazine, and Myshelf.com and others. She writes movie and theatre reviews for The Glendale News-Press.
She studied at the University of Utah, graduated from USC and has done postgraduate work in writing at UCLA. She also studied writing at Cambridge University, United Kingdom; Herzen University in St. Petersburg, Russia; and Charles University in Prague.
The author’s first novel, This Is The Place, and her book of creative nonfiction are award-winners. She also wrote a screenplay, The Killing Ground. Her book The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't was named USA Book News' Best Professional Book of 2004 and won Book Publicists of southern California's Irwin award.
The second book in the HowToDoItFrugally series is The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success which also won a USA Book News Best Book nod. It is also the winner of Reader Views Literary Award and a finalist in the New Generation Indie Best Book Awards. Her marketing campaign for that book took top honors for marketing.
Howard-Johnson’s stories have appeared in anthologies like: Pass/Fail, edited by Rose A. O. Kleidon, PhD; Calliope’s Mousepad in review journals like California State University at Stanislaus's Penumbra and the Mochila Review.
She was honored as Woman of the Year in Arts and Entertainment Award by California Legislature members, Carol Liu, Dario Frommer and Jack Scott. She was honored by her city's Character and Ethics committee for promoting tolerance with her writing and was named to Pasadena Weekly's list of 14 women of "San Gabriel Valley women who make life happen"
Born and raised in Utah, Howard-Johnson raised her own family in sunny Southern California.

Amazon, Reviews, Free Speech and More. C'mon, Let's Rant!
What’s happening is Amazon has decided to restrict the use of promotion on their site. Authors have always posted reviews of other authors' books on Amazon and included a link back to their own Amazon book page as part of their usual signature. Amazon, in their questionable wisdom, has disallowed this practice. When signing your review, you can only put your name – nothing else.
Does Amazon have a right to do this? Is this a fair practice?
I personally don’t understand Amazon’s motives for this attack on authors. If there are Amazon customers who feel Amazon shouldn’t be a promotional venue for authors they don't have to make use of the links given by authors.
If one were thinking clearly, it benefits everyone if authors/reviewers include links back to their own selling page:
1. The Amazon customer reading that review may feel confident that the reviewer, as an author, may know what he/she is talking about. This may encourage a purchase.
2. Amazon sells that book.
3. The author/reviewer may get someone to follow his link back to his selling page and make a sale.
4. Amazon sells that book.
It seems to be a win-win situation.

Very useful for anyone considering using a pseudonym. It seems kind of glamourous, but it's a full time job just promoting under this name. That said, I know cross-genre writers who do very well using a pseudonym. It's no secret - everyone knows who the writer is, it just helps differentiate the genres.
Good point about marketing two names! My three blogs and my posts in a number of forums would be wasted if I started using a new name. (However, I keep one in reserve.)
So many think that using a pseudonym will "protect their privacy" or "their anonymity." But it usually doesn't do that,either! (-:<br />
