1. found! day 6

Yes, I finally found my way to Laura Shovan's new website and to her February Writing Workout...and I'm excited that the prompts for daily writing are all about found objects.  Better yet, we don't even have to find our own objects...photos are provided!

So I'm jumping in to follow along as well as I'm able, starting with the Day 6 found object(s) below.

A Doll Trap

secured behind glass
                half-dressed
                     or less
doubly exposed
               glazed
        they gaze out
 lean  reaching     toward
        freedom

one does more than yearn
       raises her
                     chubby arm
to crack that glass again
                            again
               dolly hai-ya

she will be
           free
       will walk  among
      walls and rock
        follow    plastic paths
                   to new clothes
  new scenes

2. 15 Words or Less Poems: Unicycle

File:Einrad.jpg

Image:  Lukian

Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines here)!

Someone commented on the frog on the unicycle on the cover of BookSpeak, which sent me looking for a unicycle photo! Here's what this one makes me think of:

*  Maybe simple isn't ALWAYS better
*  Evolution
*  What clowns do in their off time

Here's my poem.

Ah, Those Were the Eons

Good old days
two arms,
two eyes,
two wheels

Evolved too far?

3. 15 Words or Less Poems:

Image: NASA

Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines here)!

I went looking for a light switch picture this morning, but came across this while browsing. This image makes me think of:

*  Is she the Big Bad Wolf being cooked in the kettle?
*  At least it's more room than working on pipes under the sink
*  It's really her pants leg, but it looks to me like a black cat is looking out from behind her

Here's my poem:

After

When I scrolled
through the images

later

golden eyes
gleamed
in darkness

He had waited

4. 15 Words or Less Poems: Soft Landing?

Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines here)!

There was a moth clinging to our screen door last week, and I took a picture of it from the underside. I've been waiting all week to post it. But apparently I deleted it. Wikimedia Commons to the rescue! Not a moth on a screen, but a wasp on a sweater. Close enough!

This image makes me think of:

*  Can wasps knit?
*  Do wasps get dandruff?
*  It looks like a ram

Here's my poem:

Coordinated

wisp of wasp
gripping grid

bits of fists
anti-skid

5. 15 Words or Less: Precision

When I taught 8th-grade English, my team was called the Thunderbirds, in honor of the U.S. Air Force exhibition squad. I am always amazed at the precision of air teams that do this! This image makes me think of:

*  They're so perfect they almost look fake, like little Christmas ornaments!
*  The body of the plane looks like the side view of my Swiss Army Knife
*  Paper airplane wars during summer school English class in the library between 10th and 11th grade. And rubber band wars, too!

Here's my poem:

Pilot knifes sky
Slicing the quiet into slivers
Leaving bleeding corkscrew clouds
Behind

6. 15 Words or Less Poems: Gunslingers in Fog

Image: Franconia Sculpture Park

Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines here)!

I was driving home from the Redbery Writers' Retreat Sunday afternoon and passed by what I thought was just a huge lot with some huge sculptures in it. Thought I'd check online to see if by chance there were any pictures of this place, labeled the Franconia Sculpture Park (in Franconia, Minnesota), and I was surprised to find a a great website with all sorts of information and media. This community sculpture garden is very cool--a great concept! This image makes me think of:

*  A stiltwalker who got separated from his troupe and is wandering the countryside
*  How we put our heroes on pedastals (which always causes us heartache)
*  Even the biggest, strongest fighter can be vulnerable to something as wispy and formless as fog--maybe it's biological warfare!

Here's my poem:

Industry

Iron boots
trample countryside

Only your
foglike love
of wild
spaces slows
my rusty
advance

7. 15 Words or Less Poems: The Meter's Running

Image: Laura Purdie Salas

Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines here)!

I was downtown (Minneapolis) earlier this week, and my parking meter was all fogged up. It looked kind of cool. To me, this image makes me think of:

*  A jukebox
*  Odd creatures in a foggy aquarium
*  An astronaut helmet

Here's my poem:

Jukebox After the Flood

Song titles?
Inky blur

Artists?
Damp mystery

Deposit quarters
Dance

to the
beat you're given

Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines here)!

Well, heck. I just realized it's Thursday! My schedule is so mixed up!

I love this image of a kitten and its claws. Sometimes, because I'm polite and friendly, people think they can push me around. I'll bite my tongue for a little while, but only for so long. Then the claws come out. We all need our claws--self-defense, right?

What does this image make me think of?

*  Those furry sweaters that shed all over the place
*  How sometimes I'll say something sharp and then think, "Whoa, did that come out of my mouth?"
*  Why are babies of everything so cute? Even monsters or ugly animals--the babies are adorable.

What does the image make YOU think of? Get your claws to your keyboard and give it to us in 15 words or less!

9. 15 Words or Less Poems: Valhalla!

Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines here)!

This image from a book is captioned "Valkyrie bearing Hero to Valhalla."

This weekend, Minnesota Brass will be in New York for the Drum Corps Associates world championship. Our show, Valhalla, is an epic tale of Viking battle, death, and resurrection in Valhalla. Learning to spin flags for the color guard has been one of the most physically demanding things I've ever done, and I'm excited and nervous for this final competition.

If you feel like it, I thought it might be interesting for you to share 15 Words or Less poems about some kind of tough battle you've faced--either serious or light-hearted. Or, of course, you can write about whatever this image makes you think of!

I won't be able to comment on your poems, but I'll look forward to reading them on my phone in between practices! If you think of it, send a Viking battle cry our way on Sunday evening!

11. 15 Words or Less Poems: Scooba Dooba Doo (or Don't)

Image:  she _ said @ comcast . net at Snarkolepsy blog
Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines here)!

I hate to clean. We tried both a Roomba and a Scooba at one point, with less then stellar success. We couldn't return them and ended up donating them with a note that someone more mechanically inclined might have better luck than we did. But I still long for them (working versions, that is), swishing and swirling throughout the house every day, sucking up dog hair and dust and leaving us with clean floors with no effort on our parts. Ahhhh. It's a nice dream. Anyway, here's what this Scooba makes me think of.

*   An electronic scale that can weigh my laziness. How do you measure laziness...in pounds?
*   Tiny spy mice, who ride a Scooba around a house and hop off onto furniture to search for clues--no footprints left behind
 *   An empty room is easy to clean. Give me something that works on a room full of chairs and corners!

So, what does this picture make you think of? Write a quick 15 Words or Less poem and share it in a comment below. Keep it clean, people!

12. 15 Words or Less Poems: Fly, Penguin, Fly

Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines here)!

This is a spheniscus magellanicus, or Magellenic penguin. It's amazing how strong and robust its chest looks, even with no muscles. I guess it's no surprise this bird can't fly, even though they have it displayed as if it's in flight. Huh. Wonder why they have it displayed this way at the Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Karlsruhe, Germany. Oh, I guess it's probably displayed as it looks while swimming! I'll just count that as flying through water, right? Anyway, here's what this picture makes me think of:

*   How can eyes look so intense, on a skeleton with no eyes?
*   Is that big chest plate bone to keep the water pressure from caving in the ribs?
*   This looks so predatory, which I never think of as a major characteristic of penguins.

So, what does this picture make you think of? Write a quick 15 Words or Less poem and share it in a comment below. Have fun!

Who knew what an elephant's feet looked like on the bottom?! I actually went looking for pictures of arthritic hands this morning, but then was sidetracked by this!  Here's what this picture makes me think of:

*   I hope that layer is a lot harder than it looks!
*   It looks like ant farm trails
*   Looks like the elephant stepped on caramel corn, spilled Coke, and other stuff. Maybe it was at a movie theater.

14. 15 Words or Less Poems: Spent

26. TRACK & FIELD - Erik Sjoqvist is exhausted at the finish line of the 5000m event.
Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines here)!

I made it through my first two drum corps shows--it's been an intense week of parade last Thursday night, drill camp all day both days over the weekend, show Tuesday night (first of the season), camp all day yesterday and show last night. My body and my brain are overwhelmed, which is why I chose the above picture, and I have so much to get better at before the next show. (But the corps did a fantastic job, and I was proud to be part of it, even if I was just a tiny, off-time, doing the wrong work part!)

Here's what this picture makes me think of:

*   All that work to come in second
*   Road rash is worse than a broken leg
*   I'm so embarrassed that I fell--would it be better to pretend to be really injured, so they can take me off the field as a hero, than to get up and finish the race in last place?

So, what does this picture make you think of? Write a quick 15 Words or Less poem and share it in a comment below. Have fun!

Striped Hula Hoops, Assorted Colors

One of the sounds of summer for me is the hula hoop, with its little metal beads clicking together as it whirls around.

Here's what this picture makes me think of:

*   A rainbow of hula hoops!
*   Giant pixie sticks
*  The sound a group of us makes hula hooping--like a bunch of toy trains click-clacking over tracks

The drift of the sand around this beach bucket makes me feel like I'm sitting on the beach, barely in the water, and the wave motion begins sucking the sand out from right around you. It's hard to tell if you're moving or the water is moving, or what. I do miss the beach. It's the only thing about Florida (besides family) that I miss.

Here's what this picture makes me think of:

*   Getting halfway home and realizing I left my favorite toy somewhere
*   Waves are like spy sculptors, shaping sand and then disappearing
*  Those bits of tar mixed in with sand at some beaches--and the gritty, sticky feeling that leaves on my skin

17. The Second Best Kind of Revision Letter

I posted a bit ago about the photopoetry book I'm working on for an educational publisher. I got it turned in early last week, and yesterday I got the revision notes.

Now, there are several kinds of revision notes I get from educational publishers. The first kind is the best kind. It's where the editor says I nailed it, she loves it, and she has nothing further for me to do (or maybe just a few small wording changes). That kind usually only happens when I'm writing an entry for an existing series so I have something to match.

The second best kind is when I have plenty of work to do on the manuscript, but the notes all make sense and feel very doable. That's the kind of revision note I got on the photopoetry book. Some adjustment in voice, a bit of rearranging, and a few changes in material--but nothing overwhelming or earth-shattering. That's the kind I often get when I'm writing for a new series, as I am here.

And it's the kind of note I got yesterday. So now I can move forward with this revision, confident I'm giving the editor what she wants. Yay!

As for the third kind, the "you totally missed the boat with this attempt" kind? We're just not gonna go there.

18. 15 Words or Less Poems: The Envelope, Please

Envelope containing May Edward Hill’s letter to Daniel Hill Jr., January 5, 1919

Photo: Archives of Ontario

Welcome to 15 Words or Less Poetry! If you've never played or want a reminder on the rules, please check out the guidelines!

At my Young Authors Conferences this week, the kids are writing poems of fear and hope. The fear poems, we write directly on the envelope, because fear is easy to find--it's right there, in your face. The hope poems we write on brightly colored index cards and put inside the envelopes, because you have to keep hope inside and it can be there influencing you, even when it's not as easy to see. So, envelopes have been on my mind.

This envelope makes me think of Dear John letters, my nephew serving overseas, and the way my stomach still rollercoasters whenever I get an envelope from a publisher. What does it make you think of?

Take one of your answers and write a quick 15 Words or Less poem. It doesn't have to describe this picture. Just get your brain moving and have fun with it!

Feel free to offer each other encouragement and feedback (see the guidelines link above), and I'll be back, probably tomorrow, to see what you've sent in the Comments! I'm sure your poems will be First Class. Arrrgg. Sorry.

I'm finally home from all my April travels, and I'm happy to be back to normal for 15 Words or Less Thursday. I can't wait to read your poems and share what my favorite bits are. Thanks, you guys, for commenting on each others' poems the past several weeks. Keep it up!

This image of acanthite reminds me of an inkblot or cloud formation--you can see so many things in it! This makes me think of the Weisman Art Museum, a survivor trapped under rubble after an earthquake, and someone trying to break free of routine (something about those curved pieces makes me think of arms struggling against the rest of the rock). What does it make you think of?

Take one of your answers and write a quick 15 Words or Less poem. It doesn't have to describe this picture. Just get your brain moving and see what comes out! For an extra challenge during National Poetry Month, try writing your poem either FOR a child or FROM a child's point of view. But if it doesn't come out as a children's poem, that's OK. 25. 15 Words or Less Poems: Wading?

I wanted a picture of a kid outside in the rain (I loved being outside during afternoon storms as a kid in Florida), but came across this first.

This image makes me think of people who see the ocean for the first time as an adult, an alien spaceship beaming someone up or down (something about the way this child is right in that beam of light), and the texture of the sand and water--they look almost like poured latex to me in this photo.

What does it make YOU think of?

Take one of your answers to that question and write a quick 15 words or less poem and leave it in the comments below. Have fun!
