Humor is the affectionate communication of insight.
Leo Rosten
My grandson, Ricky, was going to the Senior Ball, and this was photo opportunity time on the front lawn for two of his grandparents. A neighbor yelled, "Get away from the garage sale sign!"
Then I yelled, "No, stay there!" And he did. Ricky and I both had the same insight at that moment. This would make a rather silly photo. I didn't ask him to lean on the sign, which made it an even better photo. Who would ever wear a tuxedo to a garage sale? Shop for bargains in a tux?
Humor is the instinct for taking pain playfully.
Max Eastman
Ricky has gone through a lot of medical procedures in his life, but he has a rich sense of humor. I think that is partly due to all of the pain that he has experienced.
If you could choose one characteristic that would get you through life, choose a sense of humor.

$20 for a Tilley!!! What a score.
Yeah..? Yeah! I know it’s a bit much for a garage sale item but, like you said…
Thanks Jazzer!
cool hat… and a very nice drawing of it. I like hats, but for some reason I feel odd wearing anything other than a ball cap. I feel a bit conspicuous out with a fedora on. oh well…
Doug: You know, me too. I always wear ball caps, and this Tilley almost seems silly (!) to wear. Oh, looks like I missed out on a poem! Oh oh. But my ball cap fall off my head when I’m sailing. They don’t take the head bending this way and that. Maybe ball players should wear Tilley hats. Hey…I just wrote a book! Thank you very much. : )
ball caps are great but the tilley hat will keep your ears safe from the sun, all the old salts around here wear them.
erin: Good to hear! I’m really enjoying mine!
My lady writer friend looks like Paddington Bear in one of these.
Peter has a Tilley hat on a Christmas wish-list. They’re worth a lot and are super-durable, apparently. Good find!
Jack: Heh!
Blythe: You’re right. It truly was a good deal. My garage sale mentality wants everything for $1 though so it’s hard to hand over $20 for a hat! I’m so glad I did, however. Hopefully Peter will get his hat from Santa this year!
I bought a green canvas “bucket hat” from a dollar store for $1. Honestly can’t tell the difference. Items like these and Moleskine notebooks (and Fila shoes, and Mac Pro Powerbooks) have a mystique I don’t understand. Some advantages and comforts yes, but worth the premium you pay for the brand name?
I admit I did spring for a “Lumix” Camera, because my pro friends had them. And there is a bit of a cachet, and also a feeling of belonging to a group in owning these items.
