To help kick off the release of Monster Needs His Sleep, the second book in the Monster & Me series, Kid Lit Reviews is thrilled to have Monster and the young man who keeps Monster on the straight and narrow. This is the fourth stop on the Scarletta Kids Blog Book Tour. On May 12th, the first day of Children’s Book Week, KLR will review this new edition of the Monster & Me series and also be giving away a copy of Monster Needs His Sleep to one lucky winner.
I know you have tremendous responsibilities right now and many places to get to, so, this will be a quick interview. A mere six questions. We shouldn’t even get below the fold.
KLR Readers, please welcome the stars of Monster Needs His Sleep!
Welcome. Uh, what should I call you, young man?
Boy!
Really? Okay. Boy, what is it like have a monster living in your house?
It’s great! Monster and I are best friends, we do everything together. But he can be a handful. Like once we wanted to go camping and–
Lets go build a tree house! Doesn’t that sound cool? I want to build a 20 story tree house!
Monster, we need to do this interview to help us sell the book. Once we’re done, we can go and build a tree house. Sorry, like I said, he’s a handful, but life is always really fun!
* tree house *
.
Let’s get right to story. Monster, why don’t you like to go to bed?
There is way to much to do at night like read books, and play games, and eat, and watch T.V. and–
.
Monster…
What? I like to do a lot of stuff. There is only so much time during the day. When else am I supposed to write a song? Or learn about the symphony?
Monster…
the dark is creepy.
.
Monster, you like to read. That’s terrific! What is your favorite book?
Well…there is a great book out called Monster Needs His Sleep–
Monster! Shameless plug!
What? You’re the one making me do this interview. I wanted to go a build a tree house.
.
Okay, Monster’s favorite is Monster Needs His Sleep. What is your favorite book?
Monster is right about Monster Needs His Sleep, but I really like The Dark by Lemony Snicket. Monster has a fear of the dark, just like Lazlo, so reading it to Monster before bedtime helps Monster relax.
You should read me Monster Needs His Sleep.
.
Here is the million-dollar question—no, you don’t get a million dollars—what are your plans after getting some sleep? Any new adventures?
#!
On September 2nd, 2014, look for Monster Needs a Christmas Tree.
Oh I love Christmas! But that time I got worried we weren’t going to have a Christmas tree and Santa wasn’t going to visit!
Yeah, that was a close one. But you came up with a great idea to save the day!
Don’t forget! Halloween will soon be here and I am going to need another costume.
And when spring rolls around again, its time for sports and you’re going to need to exercise!
But I really wanted to learn how to cook. Do you think Mom will let me use her apron?
Maybe you’ll get one for your birthday, when we throw you a party.
. Does that mean, Monster Needs to Exercise or Monster Needs a Baseball Game and Monster Needs a Birthday Party? Count me in!
This is the last question. Monster, what is your bestest advice to young kids about bedtime?
Don’t drink a lot of water before going to bed—Not a good idea.
And always keep your nightlight close. Remember, he’s your glowing friend!
Thank you for stopping by and bringing your best friend, Monster. Good luck on the rest of the blog book tour. Stay out of trouble. And Monster, get a lot of sleep!

Q&A With Suz Korb and Eve Eden
Hi, Eve, I’m Suz. Thanks for joining me for this Q&A session. So, what do you do when you’re not fighting off zombies?
I go to Twin Forest High. I get to be part of the senior year fashion show in a few weeks, so I’m even more pee-owed at those gross rotting zombies for taking away my sewing time!
Who do you live with?
My parents who are too much in love with each other. I can’t stand their PDAs all the time! Public Displays of Affection. Parents shouldn’t make-out in public. Barf.
Do you have siblings?
No, but Kimi is my best friend and she’s like a sister to me. Except for when she cries and gets her snot on me. Then I'd gladly disown her. HAHA ;)
Any other family members?
Well, there’s an old story on my mom’s side of the family that she has a long lost uncle who disappeared from Twin Forest when he was a teenager back in like the 1950s or something.
What were three things you liked to do when you were a child?
I liked to play in the sand at the park when the sprinklers came on. Then me and Kimi would make sandcastles with buckets of water and pretend we were at a beach. I’ve never actually been to a beach of any kind. I know, I’m sad and I totally need to get out of this town once in a while! Oh well, maybe someday I’ll get to see the ocean up close and personal.
What were you afraid of when you were a child?
Heights. After recent events though (floating through the skies of hell anyone?) I’ve gotten used to being way up high. lol
How did you respond to the physiological and psychological changes a zombie attack made in your life?
Huh? I don’t think anyone has come to terms with the zombie disaster. The whole town is shell-shocked!
What makes you happy now?
Creating new dress designs.
What is your greatest fear?
Zombies chomping my skull and eating my brain! Obviously.
What would you change about yourself if you could?
I’d change my white hair back to normal light brown!
Got any secrets that you never told anyone?
Well, I don’t exactly know how to break it to my parents that I know a vampire.
What do you want?
I want my dress design to win the school fashion show so that I can get into the London College of Art and Design!
Thank you for answering my questions, Eve, and good luck getting into your college of choice!

Hello Ty! Can you tell us about yourself?
I’m a Aries. I like football and working out. I’m a one girl kind of guy. Family is everything to me.
My life goals include:
1. Make it onto an NFL team.
2. Be the first in my family to graduate from college.
3. Always maintain a 30.01 body mass index or better.
4. Always have a six-pack.
5. Visit all seven continents.
How has your life changed since you moved?
I miss my dad a lot. He died six months ago, and sometimes I wake up and don’t want to get out of bed because the pain is crushing me down. But I have to take care of my little sister, so that gets me out of bed and to school and to my job bussing tables. I still try to make time for football, because it’s in my heart.
What made you fall for Jordan?
She’s smart, independent and serious. I like that she’s organized and knows how to lead a team. She and I are very similar in a lot of ways.
Who is your football idol and favorite team?
My football idol is Troy Aikman. He was quarterback of the Cowboys when I was a kid. The Cowboys are my favorite team.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Playing for an NFL team. I want to be chosen in the first round of the draft. I’d like to be married or engaged and thinking about having kids. And maybe I’ll get a dog. A yellow lab.
From Goodreads. What girl doesn't want to be surrounded by gorgeous jocks day in and day out? Jordan Woods isn't just surrounded by hot guys, though-she leads them as the captain and quarterback of her high school football team. They all see her as one of the guys, and that's just fine. As long as she gets her athletic scholarship to a powerhouse university. But now there's a new guy in town who threatens her starting position... suddenly she's hoping he'll see her as more than just a teammate.

The battle against goblinkind continues . . . but which side will Teagan be on?
Teagan, Finn, and Aiden have made it out of Mag Mell alive, but the Dark Man’s forces are hot on their heels. Back in Chicago, Tea’s goblin cousins show up at her school, sure she will come back to Mag Mell, as goblin blood is never passive once awoken. Soon she will belong to Fear Doirich and join them. In the meantime, they are happy to entertain themselves by trying to seduce, kidnap, or kill Tea’s family and friends. Tea knows she doesn’t have much time left, and she refuses to leave Finn or her family to be tortured and killed. A wild Stormrider, born to rule and reign, is growing stronger inside her. But as long as she can hold on, she’s still Teagan Wylltson, who plans to be a veterinarian and who heals the sick and hurting. The disease that’s destroying her—that’s destroying them all—has a name: Fear Doirich. And Teagan Wylltson is not going to let him win.
Me: It’s good to have you here with us, Abby.
Abby: It’s good to be here, Casey. Dumpster Boy usually gets all of the attention.
Me: You mean Finn?
Abby: That’s what I said, right? So, what did you want to talk to me about?
Me: Everything that’s been happening. Did you believe in magic and monsters before any of this started?
Abby: Goblins and invisible cats and stuff? Not exactly. I am totally psychotic though, so I knew something bad was coming—
Me: Um…do you mean psychic by any chance?
Abby: Now you sound like a Wylltson—like a constanant or two is important, when this stuff is life and death. I dreamed the things from Mrs. Wylltson’s paintings were coming for Tea. I told her, right? At first I thought Dumpster Boy was the nightmare, but it turned out that it was something worse. Whatever—they’re not gonna get her. You know why? Because she’s got a Gagliano watching her back.
Me: What's it like living in a mafia family?
Abby: (shrugs) Every family’s got issues. With mine, they’re just bigger, you know? I’ll give you a for instance. Your family might expect you to help them hide if the cops came after them, right? My Family? They’d expect me to help them hide a body.
Me: Who do you think would win in a fight—a goblin or one of your cousins?

Austin Parker is on a journey to bring truth, beauty, and meaning to his life.
Austin Parker is never going to see his eighteenth birthday. At the rate he’s going, he probably won’t even see the end of the year. The doctors say his chances of surviving are slim to none even with treatment, so he’s decided it’s time to let go.
But before he goes, Austin wants to mend the broken fences in his life. So with the help of his best friend, Kaylee, Austin visits every person in his life who touched him in a special way. He journeys to places he’s loved and those he’s never seen. And what starts as a way to say goodbye turns into a personal journey that brings love, acceptance, and meaning to Austin’s life.
What's your favorite memory of Austin?
I don’t have a favorite really, just many fond ones, mostly related to music—that’s what brought us together. We sit around sometimes searching Youtube, sharing the cool bands we’d discovered. We kind of try to one up each other to see who’d found the best one. We’d been to some shows together, The Shins, Death Cab, Black Keyes, those were good times. When it’s just me and him, it’s really laid back. There’s no pressure, no expectations; just us and the music.
How are you coping with his illness?
It’s hard. And he doesn’t make it any easier by joking about it all the time. That just makes everyone uncomfortable. But that’s Austin, a jokester til the very end. I still keep holding out hope that he’ll go into remission, but I’m preparing myself. I’ll have to stay strong for Suz. She’ll be a basket case. Music gets me through though, and it will help me honor his memory when, I mean, if, he dies.
Some people initially misinterpret your shyness as arrogance. Has this ever caused you a serious problem? Is it something you're trying to overcome? How?
Oh yeah, it’s caused problems. People think because I don’t talk to them that I’m a snob. The jocks, they used to say shit to me, shove me around. And I’m small, so I couldn’t really do anything about it, so I just took it. I’ve been shoved in lockers, thrown in dumpsters, been called names, shoved down stairs. But I wanted them to know they didn’t scare me. I stood my ground, never ran or hid, I’d come out of it bruised or smellin’ like stink, but I didn’t co1 Comments on Character Interview: Trevor from Never Eighteen by Megan Bostic, last added: 11/7/2011Display Comments Add a Comment

Coffee of Tea? Definitely coffee. I love caffeine. I hate getting up in the morning. Like, really hate it, so a jolt of that stuff in my blood come seven a.m. usually does the trick. Don't tell anyone I'm addicted.
Breakfast or Dinner? Breakfast. I used to hate having dinner with the 'rents. Especially during the last few months before...you know...Nothing says we're a big, happy family like arguing across the dinner table. Mom sucked at cooking too. I think she burnt some of our dinners just so she wouldn't have to cook.
Mac or PC? PC. I know might wanna burn me at the stake for saying this, and that it's not cool or whatever, but I can't stand Apple products. I mean, don't get me wrong, I got sucked into the IPOD phenomenon just like every other teenager, but it's only because it's the only legit mp3 player out there, and because they straight-up murdered the Zune. Plus, I'm a friggin' teenager, man. I don't have 2 grand to spend on a laptop.
Movies or TV? Guess it's a tie. There are some movies I'm really into. I love getting scared, but not too freaked out, just enough scared to make sure I'm still a legit human with feelings and whatever. There's some good TV, but not much. I'm into the Walking Dead. I think it says a crapload about the world we live in, you know? I like to think a little bit. I guess I analyze too much.
Winter or Summer? I met Arson in the summer...and everything changed.
Beach or Forest? The forest. I like to get lost, go someplace where nobody knows where I am. It doesn't mean I wanna go an be all kinds of forgotten; that's not what I'm talking about. I just like to get lost in the woods, get a little freaked out, and then remember that these trees have been here for so long, and that they're so strong, even though they sway when a powerful wind comes in. You chicks with the tan lines probably think I'm weird.
Book or ebook? My dad's all over the Kindle, thinks it's the greatest thing since he discovered they had this new Bible program that allows him to chat with God. That last part was a joke, but needless to say, he was pretty stoked about the program, like he is about his Kindle. And I guess he's got good reason to. I mean, he can literally have hundreds of books at his fingertips at any time. I'm just an old lady that way. Whatever. Me...I like smelling a book, feeling it, knowing it, and messing up the pages because I fell asleep during the best part. I only have a few on my shelves.
Chocolate or vanilla? Black Rasberry with chocolate chips mixed in. Best. Flavor. Ever.
Dog or Cat? Someday, I'm gonna genetically create a hybrid of the two. Ever seen that lame show on Nickelodeon in the late nineties? Yeah, it'll kinda be like that. Only mine will speak Spanish.
Thanks for giving a crap,
-Emery.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your family?
It’s pretty much just me and mom, Melissa. People ask me all the time why I call her Melissa. Let’s just say that Melissa’s never been a typical mom, which is why calling her mom would just be weird. I used to when I was little. And then one day when I was about six, I got stung by a bee on my finger when I was playing outside, and I went running inside yelling Mommy as loudly as I could. Melissa was working on her first book at the time, and she came out of her office, and said very calmly, “I’m not much of a mother, and we both know that. I’m lucky you are so patient with me. Let’s just cut the traditional mother-daughter act and be friends or colleagues. There’s no sense pretending we are something we aren’t.”
So I just gaped at her, and then I said, “Uh, Melissa, I have a bee sting.” And she said, “There’s a first-aid kit in the bathroom.”
That’s pretty much the story of our relationship. She might not be a good mother, but I have to admit that she makes a pretty good “colleague.” At least I never have to worry about her reading my diary or giving me the sex talk like normal mothers. But it would be nice if she would let me in on her life sometimes.
I don’t know much about my father. Melissa doesn’t like to talk about it; she just says it didn’t work out between them. I think there’s something she’s not telling me. I’m going to find out that that is.
What are your thoughts about how your mother had such a great impact on creating PROFILE?
Well, at first I was pretty mad at Melissa. I mean, it’s her fault that a lot of this bad stuff happened at Quiet High. But sometimes people have good intentions. I think that counts for something, right? I’m not perfect either. Plus, it’s not her fault that everyone at QH just sort of jumped on the PROFILE bandwagon.
Do you think being 'predicted' could potentially make someone a criminal or are some people just inherently bad?
Hmmmm, I used to think one thing, but then something happened that made me change my mind. I guess you just have to read my story to find out what I think. I will tell you this, though: A lot of people at QH are pretty sure they know the answer.
What initially drew you to start liking Jesse?
His eyes. And maybe his glasses. I’ve always had a thing for guys with glasses. He doesn’t look like your typical jock. Jocks are a turn-off to me. He seemed kind of mysterious. Total cliché, right? But it’s true! I think there’s just something between us, you know? It’s electric, like nothing I’ve ever felt before. It’s hard to describe.
What do you think is the future of PROFILE?
If you want me to be totally honest, I’m scared. I don’t know what’s going to happen with PROFILE. All I know is that Quiet High will never be the same again. And neither will the rest of the world when this program extends across the country. I try not to think about it too much.
From Goodreads. Daphne is the new girl in town and is having trouble fitting in. At least she has Jesse... sort of. He wants to be0 Comments on {Teen Book Scene} Character Interview: The Predicteds (Christine Seifert) as of 1/1/1900Add a Comment

1. Welcome, Antonio. Let's get right to it. Is it difficult being a vampire?
Si. It is the most difficult thing in the world. I have to struggle every moment to not forget myself, to not let the demon out. I have prayed countless times to have this curse lifted from me and one day I believe God will answer and will save me.

Answering the WHY? question
It’s the WHY question that is plaguing me right now.
Why does my character want to participate in this project?
Why does she want this so much that she will jump out of her comfort zone in order to make it work? Why, why, why?
Oh, how I hate that question! It’s obvious to me that the character wants this because, well, because that’s the story I’m writing. Of course, she wants to do this. Boy, am I in trouble.
I have to go back to the basics – again.
Interview the character. Find the back story details that answers the WHY? I’m such a private person that I hate telling people the whys of anything I do, so why should I expect my characters to be more forthcoming?
But how do you describe a fascination with something? For example: There’s no logical reason for me to like quilting, yet I do. I can make up something that will satisfy you, something about the puzzle of cutting up fabric and sewing it back together; but in the end, quilting transcends those explanations and I just wind up weakly saying, I love to play with color. Really, that’s it. I love to play with color and love the feel of the fabrics and love the semi-precision of sewing, fitting things together into a larger pattern.
How can I describe for a character a fascination with the tasks needed in this new story? There are multiple motivations: the inherent fascination with a hands-on process; the feeling of connection with a missing loved one; the reluctant joy of being pushed out of comfort zones to meet more people and to open up more; the surprise of watching how the project affects others. It’s so many small things that motivate my character. How to put those into the story?
Maybe part of the answer is that I was looking for a single answer, a single incident that motivates her and in reality, it must be multiple small things, which are woven into multiple scenes.
I’m wrestling today with that awful WHY? What are you wrestling with?
