EFII’s own Marc Scheff just launched a new collaborative project today called 52 Shades of Greed. 52SOG is a fully illustrated deck of finance and OWS-themed playing cards with drawings from 28 top illustrators, art directed by Marc Scheff and Daniel Nyari.
Marc and Daniel had a project to make a set of playing cards. It was pro bono, and limited in scope. Daniel suggested adding just a few more artists to add some more oomph to the deck. The project quickly ballooned to 28 illustrators from around the world, 56 cards, a huge fundraiser, and an incredible amount of buzz. The deck is beautifully illustrated and currently available exclusively through Rocket Hub for a limited time. When the fundraiser is complete, there will be a limited set sold at the Society of Illustrators’ Museum of American illustration.
This project is a testament to what we can create together, when we get off the island.

It’s been a long time coming, but the newly redesigned Illustration Friday has been launched!
Rather than try to explain the changes, here’s the official announcement from Penelope Dullaghan on the Illustration Friday blog:
I am so thrilled to finally share with you our freshly updated website, including easier ways to share your art, browse illustrations, and connect with your creative community. With the new site, you can see all the beautiful artwork front and center, pop up a window to take a closer peek, and easily “Like” the pieces that make you smile, and “Share” them with your friends!
A few highlights:
* Thumbnails are now huge (!) and can be automatically generated (!!) for you if you choose. Try it out this week when you post your artwork — Go to the homepage, choose “Submit your illustration” and fill out the form. After you paste in your url and choose your Medium, the auto-generator will start doing its thing and you can choose your thumbnail easily! (Yippee!) You can also choose a thumbnail from your desktop if you choose. Either way is cool!
* It’s easier and fun to Submit a Topic! Think up a good word or short phrase that can be interpreted visually in lots of ways and submit it! If your topic is chosen you’re website link will be on the homepage and on the new weekly topic email.
* We are now accepting sponsorship ads on the site if you’re interested in getting more eyeballs on your artwork / little prints shop / new project. Check out the sponsors on the sidebar. View sponsorship info.
* For even more ideas to get involve with the new Illustration Friday, visit the About page.
Thank you so much for your support, continued participation and, of course, the awesome artwork you contribute! You guys are what makes Illustration Friday wonderful!
This reporter has learned through reliable sources, on deep background, and totally off the record that *wink wink*, a certain Matt Groening will be Lynda Barry’s ”super secret, special guest” for the Friday night Artist as Cartoonist keynote at this year’s ICON7, The Illustration Conference. I can also report that Ms. Barry and Mr. Groening go way back, meeting at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA in the 1970′s. Maybe they’ll talk about that, maybe they won’t. I don’t know. You’ll have to show up and do your own reportage. And please, whatever you do don’t tell anyone on Twitter or Facebook you heard it from me. Tell them you heard it on TMZ or something.
This much I can tell you, ICON7 will take place in a place called Providence, RI on June 13-16, 2012.

They do a weekly Livestream on Saturdays at 2pm EST. Each episode consists of 1-2 critiques of art submitted from the audience, and a demonstration.
“A year ago, I started a series of posts about drawing utensils I use. The first one revolved around self-contained pens called Creation of a Line – Part 1. For this installment, I will center around the pencil. While the last post got pretty indepth with some of the pens, this one is not as much.”
Last week, the final episode of the Escape from Illustration Island Podcast was released, featuring an in-depth interview with Zina Saunders.
In addition to all the gracious feedback from all of you, dear listeners, the great Steve Heller (who appeared on Episode 25), posted a nice tribute to the end of the show in his Daily Heller column, which lives on Print magazine’s Imprint blog. Thanks Steve, and everyone else, for your continued enthusiasm and support for this truly rewarding project.
For the 81st and final episode of the Escape from Illustration Island Podcast, Thomas James interviews Illustrator Zina Saunders. Together they discuss her experiences working in multiple styles, her passion for working on personal and political projects, and a lot more. Thomas also includes a personal message to acknowledge the ending of the show and thank its many supporters.
Here are links to some of the things mentioned on the show:
Thank you for all of your hard work Thomas :) I’ve been listening since I finished studying and just started to venture out into freelancing. The podcast has been a big help with my career and many others, I’m sure.

Many thanks for putting so much helpful info out there, Thomas. All things run their course, and that does not diminish their value. Cheers!

Wow. Thanks for all the kind words, everyone. This has been a real thrill for me and I’m glad that I came to this decision of ending the show on a high note. Thanks to all for joining me on this adventure. Now I can go back and listen to them from a different perspective.
Cheers,
Thomas

Your podcasts kept me very inspired during my work days. So valuable. Thanks for all the episodes.

Thomas,
As the old saw goes, ‘All good things must come to an end.’
This series of podcasts, even if there will be no more made, serve as an amazing historical document and information about some of the greatest illustrators and will be listened to for many years to come. These are invaluable to any new and seasoned artist. What would be a bigger tragedy is if all the podcasts are removed.
Thank you so much for all the wonderful work and time spent creating such a hub of information for the illustration world and congratulations on all the new projects and your illustration work.
I am sure we’ll talk again and see each other out in the world.
All my best and respect,
Scott Bakal

Great run, sorry to see it end. The podcast is one of the reasons that despite my age, I am perusing illustration as a career…best of luck with everything you do.
Adrian Johnson said, on 1/20/2012 1:41:00 PM
Thomas,
You have conducted some of the best interviews of illustrators around. Period. For instance, on the SiDEBAR podcast, we wanted to interview Dave McKean. However, after hearing your episode, we had to scratch that one off as yours was definitive. Along with Barron Storey, Murray Tinkelman, Marshall Arisman, Anita Kunz and many more, you have essentially warehoused a library of knowledge for the education and enjoyment of artists for years to come. Thank you for 81 great episodes and all the best in your future endeavors.

Thomas,
I want to say that it is sad to see the EFII podcast fade into the ether after 81 episodes, but I can only imagine the mental strain that has been lifted because of it. You and the rest of the crew have done an amazing job getting some of the greatest interviews of some of the greatest artists to us in the general public and that will be misses, but thank you for every last one of them.

Yeah, I think that was definitely for the birds…pun intended, of course. I always smile when I see that “I drew this thing” headline, before I ever scroll down. Adds fun to my day. Thanks for these. ;-D
