Reach Out and Read prepares Colorado’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. Reach Out and Read trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and to give books to children at pediatric checkups from 6 months to 5 years of age with a special focus on children growing up in poverty. By building on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers, Reach Out and Read helps families and communities encourage early literacy skills so children enter school prepared for success.
And that's why I'm so very proud to serve on the board.
It's a prescription for literacy and it works. It's that simple. But if you need more convincing:
Friends, I'm only 55 for a few more months, so here's how I'm celebrating ... For every $5 you donate to Reach Out and Read Colorado - it has to be Colorado - you receive one entry to win your choice of:
A critique of the first 5-pages of your picture book, middle grade or young adult manuscript from amazing Bloomsbury New York Editor - Brett Wright
OR
A classroom gift pack from me, which includes autographed books, coloring sheets, bookmarks, a Skype visit and more. OR An autographed set of my books plus a $100 gift card to the bookseller of your choice.
3. For every $5 donated you'll receive one entry into a random number drawing for one of the prizes above. 4. Then, on September 26th at high noon (here in Colorado we like such things) Mountain Time, I'll pick a winner! 5. If you're my winner, I'll e-mail you to let you know. And if you pick the critique as your prize, you'll have 48 hours to send me your 5-pages. Then I'll send them on to Brett. So make sure they're polished long before 9/26. You only have one chance at a first read.
So celebrate with me and support early literacy for every child. Thanks so much for stopping by! Jean
P.S. And if you want to get weird, there's always this:

Whether you write picture books, chapter books, middle grade or young adult, stay tuned. I have a chance of a lifetime coming in late August. But I'm not ready to spill the beans quite yet. So polish up your favorite manuscript (Oops - now there's a hint!) and hang on. August will be here before you know it.

I love giving and receiving books and with the holidays approaching I find myself reviewing my own wish list as well as preparing shopping lists for others. Recently, Chronicle books asked if I would like to take part in their #GiveBooks campaign and in the process gift nine books to family and friends. I gladly accepted the challenge and I’m excited to announce that in the spirit of the holidays one lucky winner will win my gift picks.
Enter and Support a Good Cause
For every #GiveBooks Facebook comment & Pinterest pin, Chronicle Books will donate a book to children in need through First Book. The goal is to giveaway 10,000 books!
What You’ll Win
My list is stacked with design and architecture titles, but I’ve included a Tartine Box set for the food afficonados. Here’s what’s up for grabs: Balthazar Korab : Architect of Photography

You can enter by joining the Grain Edit Facebook Fan Page or by following us on Pinterest (please read the details below). Feel free to use both methods of entry, giving you two entries into the giveaway and increasing your odds of winning.

Thanks Kimberly. Yes, the guides are written by award-winning teachers and are tied to learning standards. But here's what's even better - they are great activity guides for parents and grandparents too. Gobs of great fun for library, home and school.
Today, I heard about a young, self-employed carpenter whose hands were incinerated in the blast at the Boston Marathon. So many lives were greatly touched by this tragedy. How can we not help?
I've already donated to One Fund Boston. But now I'm challenging you to do the same. And as an added incentive, I'm giving away a picture book manuscript critique to the highest donor.
So please, read about One Fund Boston below. Then enter your donation bids and your camouflaged e-mail address in the comment section of this post from now until 4/30/13. The highest bidder on 4/30/13 (midnight Mountain Time) will win a picture book critique. The winning donation will be verified by your One Fund Boston Paypal receipt.
And even if you're not the critique winner, I hope you'll still consider donating. Because after all, we are Americans. We may be bruised, but we're never broken.
Peace, Jean
One Fund Boston: 2013 Our hearts continue to go out to those affected by the tragedy in Boston. In the immediate aftermath of the devastation and days since, we've witnessed incredible acts of humanity from a community that we are so proud to serve.
In light of this event, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Tom Menino recently announced the formation of The One Fund Boston. This fund has been established to help the individuals and families most affected.
Please join us and our partners in support of the victims of this tragedy.
Just want to say how awesome Tara Lazar is for offering up a critique! And for donating, as well as all the others here! And... hi Cathy! *waves* I keep bumping into you! :-)
Thanks Jean for making us aware of this opportunity to help! As I posted on Tara's blog, this is close to my heart, as we had a family member just 1 block away from the explosions. We are couting our blessings that she was okay, and praying for those who were devasted by this. I was more than happy to donate.
I've changed up the rules for the auction bidding, Connie. Now everyone will have a chance. I hope you'll enter your pledge. Thank you, for stopping by. Jean
Hi Jean - I just donated $50. One of my close friends ran in the Marathon. He finished just minutes before the explosions - was about 75 yards away. His wife, daugher and son-in-law had just left the finish line. They were safe but shaken. Thank you for doing this. xoxo
This is wonderful and healing to all that hurt and sadness brought about by this horrific act of terror. Would like to donate $25. Do you know if there's another way to give besides with paypal? Thanks, Jean
So glad I finally figured out Paypal. Just donated $25. cekster at aol.com Thanks for the push for this important donation. Kidlit people are the best!
Sorry Jean! I live in Hong Kong, and the gmail login that popped up was in Chinese, and when I signed in anyway, it came up as "anonymous." I've just sent you an email with this same explanation and my email address. When I post this, it will probably come up again as anonymous, but my name is Amy Cohas. Glad to see so many people participating.
It's May 2nd so you know what that means. The critique contest deadline has passed.
As of yesterday, we've raised over $1400 for One Fund Boston - and that was only from the contest entrees. Many, MANY other generous friends messaged me to let me know that they donated as well. Tara, Tammi and I thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
Before we announce the winners - a little business.
If you've not yet done so, please make good on your pledges. Whether you win a critique or not, please make your donations to One Fund Boston. Even though we'll verify donations for our critique winners, we won't be asking for verification from the rest. You're on the honor system here, friends. Please make your donations today.
And now, the moment you've been waiting for. The winners of the One Fund Boston Picture Book Critique Contest are ...
Salina Yoon - who will receive a critique from Tammi Sauer Wendy Greenley - who will receive a critique from Tara Lazar Paul Zajak - who will receive a critique from ME.
WOO HOO! Congratulations to all. Your critters will be contacting you directly.
Thanks again everyone and have a great day.
Jean P.S. Winners were selected by Random Number Generator.
Congratulations to the winners! Jean, did you total up all the donations? I think you've helped raise a very nice chunk of change for One Fund Boston! Awesome!!
During November-December 2011, a group of awesome book-loving, generous folks came together in the Light Up the Library Auction. Using the proceeds from the auction, thousands of books were shipped via container through the Books for Africa organization to Uganda. And one of the beneficiaries was a new library at Musana Children's Home - a place that's near and dear to my heart. See the amazing photos below.
Never, in my wildest dreams, did I imagine the effort of so many to create a space so rich and beautiful.
So to celebrate, I'm giving away a LIGHT UP THE NIGHT classroom pack. All you have to do is leave a comment from now through April 30, 2013. Then on May 1st I'll select one commenter (sorry, U.S. only - postage breaks me), via random drawing, to win:
A copy of LIGHT UP THE NIGHT signed by the author and illustrator.
A LIGHT UP THE NIGHT poster
30 LIGHT UP THE NIGHT activity sheets
30 LIGHT UP THE NIGHT coloring sheets
30 LIGHT UP THE NIGHT bookmarks
Then please check back on May 1st to find out if you're the lucky winner!

Fess up! We've all been there. Timeout. And to celebrate my latest picture book
TIME OUT FOR MONSTERS!
(Disney Hyperion - on shelves 7/31/12)
tell me your timeout tales and have a chance to win great prizes.
Here's how it works:
Take a video - under 2 minutes - of your kid, your spouse, your pet, your parents, your teacher -- anyone -- in the timeout corner doing what they do or telling us how they got there in the first place. Be creative but keep it clean.
Post it on YouTube and send me the link. I'll accept your links as soon as they're ready, up through 8/31/12.
Then, beginning 8/1/12, I'll post the videos on this blog, in the order in which they came/come in. I reserve the right to exclude any videos which I deem inappropriate or not in the kid-friendly spirit of my books. Also, I won't post any videos of children screaming or crying. My purpose, after all, is to have fun.
Once your video is posted here, get all your friends to stop by and comment on your video blog post and, if you're up for a little competition, tell them to submit videos too.
Enter as many videos as you like.
The videos with the five highest number of unique commenters (must supply name and e-mail address) prior to September 1st (comments counted through 11:59 P.M. Mountain Time, 8/31/12) will win:
1st Prize - $100 gift card for Amazon or the online bookseller of your choice, a signed copy of TIME OUT FOR MONSTERS and a monster bag of goodies.
2nd-5th - Autographed copy of TIME OUT FOR MONSTERS!
So the sooner you enter, the more time you'll have to gather voters!
See you in the corner!

Eli No! is a fun tale about a loveable dog with a knack for getting into trouble. The story was inspired by the author’s (Katie Kirk of Eight Hour Day) dog, Eli, as well as a phrase often said by her nephew. Whenever Katie would say “Eli no!” her cousin, Parker, would say it too. Between Parker’s joyous exclamations and Katie’s desire to write and illustrate a children’s book a new project was born.
Two years ago Katie gave us an exclusive sneak peak at the original mockups for the book. Soon after that, the title was picked up by a major publisher and has been in development ever since. We’re excited to announce that the book is now available. To celebrate, we’ve teamed up with Katie to give away three signed copies!

HOORAY JEAN, CONGRATULATIONS!!
Thanks for stopping by, Mike!
WOW! Where have I been?
I didn't know you had teacher guides available. I'll have to pick up more ink cartridges, so I can print them out.
Congratulations on your award, Jean. You know everyone at my house is a fan! =)
Thanks Kimberly. Yes, the guides are written by award-winning teachers and are tied to learning standards. But here's what's even better - they are great activity guides for parents and grandparents too. Gobs of great fun for library, home and school.
Congrats, Jean! Your books are favorites at our St. Thomas More school library!!!
Congratulations, Jean!!!!
