26. Pencil Quote - When you are having a bad day...

A quote day!  Not sure what drove this to pop into my head, but I like it. It's a little on the heavy side (like life is, sometimes) but it's most definitely true!

27. Welcome to my Saturday

Welcome to my Saturday. Today is a GREAT day... Busy!

First things first! Woke up to an Etsy email from someone asking about my Starry Eyed Surprise iphone case. So I snapped a shot of my own (I have that exact one) and also answered some questions about it.

Ran out for my hair cut...

then shipped out a couple big prints to their new home

on the way home-- WOW- What luck - got a fresh baked baguette to go with...

the stew I made last night. Yum! Had lunch with Matt, then...

a quick laugh before I head back out.

Pre-work preparation!

Welcome to my office! My spot at the library.
Getting down some greeting card ideas today.

I also rediscovered this awesome Lynda Barry book.
(Almost bought this year ago at the Brookline Booksmith, but didn't)

On the way home, I picked up a few things at the grocery store...

...also picked up a little treat for someone waiting at home (hint: not Daisy)

Finally home! Writing more cards. Good night!

28. Chris Rushing

Chris Rushing

Mr. Chris Rushing is a designer/illustrator/art director working in NYC, at Time Warner. He has a great number of interesting projects and a nice site with which to neatly house them. It looks as though while working at TW Chris has had the chance to create some great web and interactive experiences —  these projects are interesting, and well worth a look. What really attracted me to his work, though, was his skill in lettering and illustration. I love the pinache and wit throughout his portfolio. In general, I’d say his work is smart and succinct; interesting and engaging without being overstated.

A number of his prints are available for purchase at Society6.

Chris Gardner, who drew our beautiful Drawn logo, shows some sketches and preliminary work for a logo he drew for a new iOS word game called Letter by Letter that launches today.

I’ve been playing a closed beta of the game for the past few weeks, and I’m complete addict. Its the perfect mix of Scrabble, Boggle, and Risk with short, but challenging turns that require some crafty strategy and a healthy vocabulary.

32. Please Social Share my Threadless submission...

http://www.threadless.com/submission/452012/I_Love_To_Dance

Hey, happy Sunday! Here's something fun about Sunday— this cute new t-shirt I designed and submitted to Threadless. But here's the sticky part— it has only been submitted, not approved for voting (..yet, I hope).
Your help here could make a big difference! If you click this page, and "social share" the design to your favorite online places, it might help to get my latest Threadless submission approved for voting! It's a mystery to me how they do things over there, but I know that social shares usually help everything (I can't help but think of Mary Poppins' "spoonful of sugar" helping the medicine go down. I must revisit that movie again soon!). So if you like the t-shirt, if you could picture your 4-year old niece loving it and wearing it (I can certainly picture my 2-year old niece in it!) then please Share it thorough the links on this page. I would be SO grateful. :D

34. A Conversation With Myself...

"You know those letters that you did with the dark blue edging and light blue center were far to bold for mural?  They real drew too much attention."

"Yes, I know.  That's why I changed the centers to green and posted pictures.  I thought the green would blend in a little bit better."

Dark blue edging with a green center

"Weeellllllll, it's still not working.  That dark blue edging with the dark green is still too demanding."

"Oh, it's fine.  Just live with it a little bit.  You'll get used to it."

"Come on, who are you kidding?  You should know to trust your instincts by now."

"Do you realize how long I've spent hunched over on the floor doing these letters over and over?  My back is sore, I've got a kink in my neck..."

"Yes, I know.  But, I think you're making excuses.  Do you really want to drive by the mural for years wishing you had changed the color?"

(Grumbling...sigh)

"Alright, you win.  I'll repaint the letters AGAIN.  I'll use a dark green/light green comination so that it is more harmonious with the background...BUT THIS IS THE LAST TIME!"

35. Finally, Some Pictures...

Well, not only did the laptop get a virus, but the charger ceased charging.  Then, the desktop computer got a really nasty virus, rendering it useless.  And, on a sad note, my fathe- in-law, Robert Smith, passed away last weekend.  Needless to say, no mural progress worth noting has happened...that is, until now.

Little details have been my focus - the bottle and wine glasses...

...the swirled hair and curling vines on the Dionysus character...

...and the vines reaching across the top of the arch.

Now, I've started some lettering along the bottom (the mural's title) and I'll show that when I've worked out some kinks.   One thing I've realized is that I really don't like doing the lettering.  Since it's along the bottom, I have to be down low on the floor and it gets uncomfortable quickly.  Also, I tend to overfuss letters, so it can be tedious.

The only thing after that is the field beneath the wave - I have to line up the panels in order to put in the plants and some dots of red strawberries.

The Studio Photo-Bomber Strikes Again!

Summer is running out, so I'd really like to be done and work on some personal projects for a change.  Unfortunately, I don't think much of that will happen.  So, finishing the mural will be my summer goal.

43. Mary Kate McDevitt

mary mcdevitt

The sweet and quirky work of Mary Kate McDevitt never fails to delight. Her personality shows through in every brush stroke and chalk mark, and really accentuates her obviously love for her craft. With a quickly growing client list of industry big-timers like Chronicle Books, Lehigh University, Better Homes & Gardens and Rachael Ray Magazine, Mary Kate seems to be on a path to lettering success.

If you like what you see, you can buy some prints of her original artwork in her shop!

This week’s Illustration Friday’s prompt “Jump” lends itself to lots of ideas, so I might just use it as a warm-up for the week.

Below is an illustration where I played around with type and a painterly style.

47. A Tail A Day. Weekend!

The weekend is a really good time to... have a little fun with your blog template! :D So, what do you think of my new look? I'm trying out blogger's new Dynamic Views.

I'm pretty happy about the new offerings. There's lots of ways (7, if you're counting) to keep your blog looking fresh and fun! You can check out all the latest on the new templates at the Blogger Buzz blog.

So.. aside from cleaning up my blog template a bit, I'm going to take part in a few of the activities listed above! I will draw, I will finish a work project (which is not listed above... hmmm..) I will have a nice lunch or brunch, I already saw a movie (21 Jump Street, and I highly recommend it. I'm being completely honest! it is GREAT!), I will sleep, do errands, draw, have dog time, watch a video, and maybe even try to finish the (hilarious) book I am reading. Is all that asking too much? Hmm... maybe, we'll see! What are you doing this weekend?

Here's a montage of sticker graphics that I photographed on an outside wall a couple years ago. Who can guess where I took the picture?

The first person who names the correct town or city in the comments wins two free signed and remarqued posters. (The two-sided posters for Imaginative Realism and Color and Light). One guess per person, please.

Addendum: Michael has guessed the correct answer: Laguna Beach, California.

50. Danielle Davis

Danielle Davis

I recently stumbled upon the charming work of Danielle Davis. Her lettering work pulls from both traditional typography and entirely modern calligraphic styles and she always puts a unique spin on each project. I especially love the small personal illustration touches on each of her projects. Keep up to date with Danielle’s work on her blog and be on the look out for her note card line, Local No. 633, hopefully coming out soon!
