51. Wondercon’16: DC All-Access… Not Quite All

IMG_1585Chalk it up to weird timing or bad planning. Even before DC Comics makes all their big REBIRTH announcements at Wondercon on Saturday, the publisher didn’t mind holding panels. DC All-Access opened their big weekend. Even with such a fantastic line up of creators one has to wonder why you’d ever let the words “ALL ACCESS” […]

WonderWoman_50_coverIt's not that it's a terrible comic book -- I wish it were! Terrible comic books can be fun in their own right. It's just that it's ... fine.

In May DC is reimagining your beloved Hanna Barbera cartoons with books like Future Quest and Scooby Apocalypse. While that latter title sounds like a late night Tumblr parody, it isn't. And here are the variant covers by Steve Rude, Bill Sienkiewicz, Howard Porter and Neal Adams to prove it.

60. “I love this world but there’s something missing” – DC gets back into its comfort zone with Rebirth

Cbh9CswUYAA5U29.jpgIn his video introducing DC's Rebirth publishing plan, Geoff Johns calls it a "third rebirth" for DC. At first I thought this referred to the original DC, Silver age Flash and...something else? But he was actually referring to reimagining Green Lantern and the Flash characters with better, more motivated origins. Perhaps more accurately, from an external viewpoint, its the third rebirth of DC in the Diane Nelson era, following the New 52, DCYou and now a new line based on core characters. Or as he put it, in the video's most quoted line, "It's not just an event, it's a mission for us."

66. DC Comics Month-to Month Sales: January 2016 – The Adjustment Bureau

Greetings, sales charts fans! It's time once again to look at DC's sales figures.

Things were bad for DC in January. How bad? With records going back to March 2003, DC had its second worst average sales on record of 21,845, just barely beating the March 2009 low point of 21,792. The Vertigo line had its lowest average sales on record by far: 6,832, beating the previous average low of 7,055 in March 2015. And the median sales for both lines was even lower: 24,624 & 5,802 respectively.

DC shipped twenty fewer comics in January as compared to December (74 versus 94). Two titles not shipping in January were two of DC's top sellers, Dark Knight III and Justice League. They moved a total estimated 1,616,524 comic units in January, compared to 2,640,519 in December, a difference of over a million units!

68. Batman V Superman is either in trouble or a savior

I think we can all agree that yesterday’s new Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice trailer was pretty dope. But will it be enough to rescue the fortunes of Warner Bros., whose movie slate of late has been a series of costly flops, from Pan to In the Heart of the Sea. It’s common wisdom […]

70. Five superhero shows put to the Bechdel test; only one fails

theflashLast week, fellow Beat writer Alex Jones wrote this article about the TV show Arrow and it's treatment of female characters. I don't really follow Arrow, so I can't say whether I agree with his assessment. But the premise got me thinking about whether any of these shows could pass the Bechdel test, i.e. the new standard for fictional female characters.

73. How Marc Tyler Nobleman Rescued the Legacy of Batman Co-Creator Bill Finger

Detective_Comics_27For decades, Bob Kane was the only person credited for the creation of the Batman. However, as Nobleman argued at 92Y, Bill Finger was the man who did most of the work.

74. DC, WB, Mattel and Target going big on DC Super Hero Girls

Everyone is teaming up for DC Super Hero Girls, the multi-company, multi-platform push for girls' versions of DC's lady characters. Target will have an exclusive line of apparel and toys; Boomerang will air a 44-minute special and the digital shorts. The line also claims some firsts: "the first-ever 6-inch action figure designed for girls; first 12-inch collection of action dolls featuring strong, athletic bodies that stand on their own in heroic poses; and first-ever action role-play toys for girls." Toys that stand on their own -- kinda a nice metaphor there.
