Alan Moore has expressed that he doesn’t want there to be any other Watchmen comics. There may have even been a verbal agreement, which is why there were no other Watchmen comics for 25 years until Before Watchmen.

Of course DC has the right to do whatever they want, which is why this is ethically repugnant instead of illegal

Thereby retcon-ing the Watchmen movie into the DC Cinematic Expanded Universe or whatever it is they’re calling it, retroactively establishing a foundation for who-knows-what.

Torsten Adair – I’ve heard your v2.7 era labelled the “relevance era” for DC in the past. I like to think that there was some kind of secret crisis that happened some time around 1970 because the shift from Silver Age stories to the Denny O’Neil-type “relevance era” stories is abrupt enough that it feels like a different version of the same universe. I’d probably consider that a 3.0 shift rather than just a change in the minor version number myself.

The Marvel logo of the 90s was better than most of the comics.

The one where they fire Eddie Berganza, Jim Lee, DiDio and rehire Karen Berger is the logo that will work. It’s all just lipstick on a pig until then.

Also: put back the OVERSHORTS.

PS: Clearly Milton Glaser needs to be called in to update Milton Glaser’s design. It’s not like Chip Kidd wouldn’t jump at the chance to take it on either.

Kate: I love it! Maybe that would spark a full-scale ’60s revival, with DC’s chief rival calling themselves “Marvel Pop-Art Productions” again.

Logo redesigns come and go. Surely the real news is that they might change their name to “DG Comics.” Bold move after all these years.

Fans will be quick to dismiss this news, and I’m skeptical, of course. But say what you will about Geoff Johns’ work, he does actually care about these characters. If he’s actually given some real power over “DC Films” (cough), then maybe Batman will stop killing people and Superman will crack a smile now and then. Anyway. Fingers crossed.

At least with Johns we get as close to apologies for whatever initiatives don’t work at WB/DC that we’re going to get.

Not actual apologies, mind, but the closest we might get.

After being disappointed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, I watched Man of Steel again. It was a solid movie, genuinely interesting with a lot of potential for the series. Then they started fighting… and fighting… and fighting… and all of the goodwill the movie had built up with me evaporated. This was well before Superman killed Zod.

I had completely forgotten how good the movie was up until that point. That’s how damaging the latter portion of the film was.

It would seem smart to take what worked with MoS and expand it in the sequel. This did not happen. Clark/Superman got no further character development or sense of direction. His relationship with Lois gained no depth. Superman’s interaction with the world got no clarity. Many things were implied, but the result was not something I cared about. BvS did not serve Superman the character well at all.

As for Batman/Bruce Wayne, his character arc is deeply flawed. So much so that it undermines the film’s credibility. After living through the destruction of Metropolis, Bruce’s substantial ill will towards Superman is understandable. What is not understandable is Bruce apparently not investigating Superman.

With relatively little to go on Lois Lane learns the identity of Superman in MoS. This was before he put on the costume and presented himself to the world, before he put Smallville on the map through his hyper-destructive battle with Zod and crew, before he is seen as Superman at the Kent’s residence showing significant interest in Martha, before the world is told on live TV that Lois Lane knows who Superman is.

It is entirely logical that a Superman and metahuman obsessed Lex Luthor would be able to find out that Clark Kent is Superman. It is entirely ILLOGICAL that a Superman obsessed crime fighting detective named Batman who is also a billionaire industrialist would not find out that Superman is Clark Kent and that his mother’s name is Martha.

There are certainly other problems with the BvS, but my point is that these issues should have been identified and addressed well before filming began — at the screenplay stage.

Snyder is getting a lot of blame, but whoever greenlit and produced this film deserves just as much. Maybe these new appointments at DC/WB will improve things, but I am skeptical. As the article states, Johns and Berg were already involved.

I completely disagree with this analysis. The whole point is he doesn’t need to find out who Superman is. He doesn’t see him as a human being until the largely chided (and I think greatly misunderstood) “Martha” moment in the film. SUperman is an enemy to be destroyed, first and foremost to Bruce/Batman. He doesn’t “:figure” out who SUperman is because he doesn’t want to and sees him as the furthest thing from human on the planet. It’s not until the “Martha” moment and her name’s connection to his own personal tragedy that he even considers for a second that Clark/Superman could be anything other than an enemy that needs to be destroyed. The “martha” moment in the film ultimately stops Batman because it makes him realize Clark/Superman isn’t this “conceptual” enemy but could actually be considered to be a living breathing if not human, than at least non-enemy being.

I’ve long thought that Marvel should explore their non-super-hero comics for film and TV projects and that’s about 1000% more true for DC.

Erik Scott gets BvS in a way that most other vocal fanboys don’t. He actually watched what was on the screen (instead of cataloguing all the ways the movie didn’t match the mental checklist he had in his head). It’s amazing how clear some things are if you actually pay attention.

Awesome how BvS fans can still insult people who simply didn’t like the movie. “haters didn’t actually watch and get the movie.” Nope, a large portion of living humans did, and they found it dull and calculated, and also poorly conceived. Why was that little girl’s mom in a skyscraper and she was just hanging out in the downtown by herself? Because the movie was poorly conceived. And an insult to people who love the characters.

Love it if you like, that’s your thing. But don’t insult people who dislike it. There are a multitude of reasons to not like it.

Will Johns be better? I’m not a big fan, but he can’t do worse.

Well, the actual point is why would anyone think Superman HAD a secret identity. Why would you assume a god-like being who can fly anywhere he wants at amazing speed waste his time being anything else?

I mean, does anyone in the Marvel movies have a “secret identity” besides Spider-Man? And they actually explain why he does in Civil War…which is what movies that genuinely have a brain do to separate themselves from movies that just pretend to have one.

Better than the last two, at least. And at least they’re timing the intro better this time. It was kind of ridiculous last time when they did the New 52 relaunch and then introduced a new logo 7 issues in.

As a logo it’s fine, though I feel like it’s trying hard to tweak those Feelings Of Nostalgia that I as an Old Man feel for the DC bullet. Since DC likes to use those Feelings Of Nostalgia to get me to Open My Wallet, well, I’m naturally a bit skeptical.

I actually like the “peel” logo – I don’t even think it looks dated yet. The swoosh was dated the day before it was introduced. Of course as an old man the only one that “looks right” is the DC bullet, but that’s because I Am Old and it was the logo that was on my Personal Golden Age Of Comics so of course It’s Objectively The Best.

Also to truly invoke those Feelings Of Nostalgia it needs to be tilted counter-clockwise by 45 degrees.

Actually, this new bullet looks more like the version DC used a few years *before* the Glaser logo. From mid-1972 through the fall of 1973, DC had a very ‘plain wrap’ logo — two large, block letters surrounded by, but not touching, a black circle. Sometimes the title of the comic would be squeezed in the small empty space above and below the DC inside the circle. Pretty ugly.

I’d say this new logo is an improvement over that — and the previous ‘page turn’, but I’d be happier if they took the trip on the nostalgia bus all the way back to the Glaser bullet — or to a variation of the DC/Superman National Comics 1960’s bullet (which is still used on some DC licensed products.)

I don’t know why DC feels the need to farm the job out to an outside design firm. They should have hired Todd Klein to design the new logo. He has created some of DC’s best logos over the past 30 years or so and knows a thing or two about good design, lettering and DC history.

On the new logo: the “D” is fine, but the “C” looks clunky: there is something crude and unsophisticated about it. It looks like it is from one of those ‘FREE FONT” packages. No finesse. Oh well, better than the peeling sticker logo.

I predict the main book launching at around 80k copies, and steadily dropping. Jim Lee will draw even fewer issues than he is currently planning to do, and the book will quickly slip to around 30k. The one-shots will sell around 25-35k each, with 35k being an absolute max.

I understand the cold business aspect of trying to mine some new money out of old properties, and I’m sure it was fun for those involved to do their ‘What If?’ takes on these iconic characters — but in the end, isn’t it all rather creepy looking? Sort of like when aging stars have too much plastic surgery. Or that time when 63 year-old Pat Boone dressed up in a studded leather collar, bared his chest and did that album of heavy metal songs.

The more serious they try to make Batman and Superman’s costumes, the sillier they look.

Nothing says “stuck in the past” to me like people hung up on wanting to bring back briefs. But then, I’ve also always been a “no cape” person even before The Incredibles.

Is it sad that today’s superhero fan can make exception for superpowers but can’t get past the red undies or a cape?

‘Realism’ is a fickle thing.

I think it’s still worth noting that Golden Age superheroes wore trunks over tights like acrobats or circus performers. Not wearing the trunks would be… very revealing for a man. I guess we’re now so far from Superman’s original cultural context that most people are incapable of seeing his old costume as anything but “underwear on the outside.”

For what it’s worth, I think Derenick’s turnaround here looks a lot better than the cover by Janin released previously. Maybe it’s just that he used a lot more ink for shading, so the overall impression isn’t such a blue onesie.

I agree with Tim. Whenever anyone tries to “fix” Superman, they tend to break him even more.

Superman, to me, is a cartoon character, and changing his costume so drastically is kind of like getting rid of Bugs Bunny’s ears. Bugs has had many designs over the years but nobody has ditched the ears.

Superman is an old-fashioned character – he’s the guy superheroes are named after! – so his costume should have an old-hat feel. And Kate it’s not about being “hung up” on it – the red trunks aren’t going to make me read the lousy Super-books either way. But the traditional costume had a very simple red-blue-yellow rhythm that worked well and endured for decades, and tinkering with it, uh, has *not* resulted in any kind of successful, enduring looks.

Could maybe Jim Lee not design the new costumes on any iconic characters? Seriously, they just look cheesy as hell.

I can believe a man can fly before I can believe a man in American society would wear the trunks. It’s not about science, it’s about what the trunks look like to an observer. Arguably, he could have one of those frilly Victorian collars, since what he wears apparently doesn’t matter, right?

It does matter. He’s an icon. What he wears is practically synonymous with who he is. More people wear Superman merchandise than have ever read a comic book.

Yeah, I’m on board for this, and I’ve also never read a Suicide Squad comic. I was leery at first; the initial trailer made it look like another dark, gloomy, depressing DC movie. But each subsequent trailer has looked better, with more emphasis on humor. Good.

I’ve read that the failure of the light-hearted GREEN LANTERN, five years ago, spooked DC on humor in their movies. They decreed that their movies be utterly serious and joke-free. Glad they’re backing off from that stance.

I don’t get it – doesn’t DC already have a mature readers imprint (Vertigo)? So why not tap Way to rejuvenate it instead of a whole new imprint? All the PR for YA right now, you wish it was for Vertigo, that would’ve been amazing, hasn’t been the same since Karen Berger left. Like Berger, Way clearly has a vision for his imprint, feels like a missed op for Vertigo, esp when the YA books to me feel like the vibe of those early Vertigo books.

My initial reaction to this was “Deja-Vurtigo” … which I think is a good argument for not doing this under the Vertigo imprint. Off-beat superheroes for grown-up readers is what Vertigo was, and dragging the imprint back to DC’s superhero universe would undermine what they’re trying to do with it now. It would say that trying to build a library of original stand-alone fiction wasn’t working, and that they had to rewind the clock to 1993 when Vertigo was doing it “right”.

I think the idea of a branch from the DCU written for readers who are ready for something different from the usual spandex punchfests they grew up with is a worthwhile idea. Vertigo was a great stepping stone for me in the mid-1990s. Re-developing a “mature readers” wing for the DCU might also open up a little more freedom in the main line for material that appeals to younger readers (though I realize I’m probably just being pollyanna on that point… it doesn’t seem to be an audience that DC Entertainment is really interested in cultivating).

Much as I like seeing Felicity be more than the girlfriend/IT gal, I can’t help thinking it would be harder for the writers to work her into the episodes if she’s not on Team Arrow. Team Arrow has been fairly even with Felicity, Thea, and Laurel representing women and Ollie and Diggle representing men. If you swap out Felicity for Curtis, the dynamic swings back to the guys. So I have mixed feelings about this, though I do want Curtis to become Mr. Terrific sooner rather than later.

On the one hand, I like Kellums’s Curtis Holt, so seeing more of him on the show is a good thing.

On the other hand – I assume given last week’s episode this means more “relationship problems” for the show – this time between Holt and his husband. Which, frankly, this show does not need. At all.

On the gripping hand – this might mean that they fridge his husband in order to give him something horrible to happen in his life. Which also this show does not need.

What this show needs more of is superheroes defeating robot bees with trick arrows.

Those are the 7th and 8th films in series with die hard fanbases. Nobody is jumping on those that late in the game based on word of mouth (especially HP 7 PT 2). BvS is meant to bring in new fans, even if it is a sequel (and on that note, at least only film #2, not film 7 or 8).

The biggest new release this past weekend was God’s Not Dead 2: Eschatological Boogaloo. If the second week of Batman <3 Superman hadn’t come out ahead of a independent fundieporn sequel with an even-lower Rotten-Tomato score, that Justice League of Avengers movie would be looking at a direct-to-DVD release.

“Content improvement”. Best euphemism ever. Film-making as contract negotiation followed by marketing. They must be frustrated that the movie actually has to be filled with something before they can make their money. Don’t people realize how much work it took to market this thing?

I feel like WB could really save their own bacon by cutting ties with Snyder and either bumping James Wan into the Justice League director’s chair, or going out and spending a truck-load of money on an attention grabber.

I still don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility that Justice League gets delayed from that April 11th start date. I just don’t see where it gets the billion dollars it needs at this rate.

If the movie were in fact as huge a worldwide hit as WB wanted it to be, there wouldn’t be reports of studio agita, now, would there?

Does this increase or decrease the pressure on “Rebirth” to succeed?

Brian, increases to neutral for Rebirth pressure. The studio will have bigger fish to fry, but the opening week means it’s not a full-on “burn down the house” crisis.

Zack Snyder’s horrific tendencies made him a good choice to direct the ultra-violent, R-rated WATCHMEN. But he’s a lousy choice for directing mainstream DC superheroes. He began his career with a horror film (the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake) and it looks like he’s returning to his roots.

I can’t imagine a dark, gritty and brutally violent Justice League movie. But that’s what we’ll probably get, because that’s the only kind of movie Snyder knows how to make.

A JL movie needs the sort of exuberance and FUN that Joss Whedon brought to the first Avengers movie (before he burned out on the Marvel Cinematic Universe).

Sounds like DC’s try-hard was turned up to 11 and they managed to do enough. This “strength” might include a fair bit of smoke and mirrors, which is even worse than failure as many might pin their fortunes to something that has the veneer of success but isn’t actually comprised of it.

What my man, Tim, is trying to say is that It sucked but it sure did look pretty doing it. While I respect Ben for his efforts, he just wasn’t the Bat. The story line, if you can call it that, was scattered and painfully redundant. We all know by now what planet Superman is from and how Batman’s mommy and daddy got shot in that bum-ass alley cause they don’t know what a Daimler limousine is, I guess. We don’t need to waste the first 3o minutes of every DC movie retelling the same origin crap over and over except this time daddy has a mustache. If people don’t know by now why waste the time and money. They’re probably not the ones that are going to see the film anyway. DC just has to except the fact that Marvel is the franchise authority. They literally have it all. Especially the writing. Jesus H, the script had to have been downright awful Oh, and Lex Luthor was shite. The casting director should be shot in that same alley along with Batmom and Batdad and the bloody script.

DC has the trinity up front and center I see.

It’s awesome that the crew that led DC off a cliff (by going back to the 90’s when the industry crashed) is going to rescue the company. There’s no real solution, since completely overhauling the editorial staff is next to impossible, but someone in editorial should have lost their job by now. Maybe Warners just wants yes men?

Or maybe making successful corporate super-hero comics is a hard job that comes with some failures sometimes, but you stand a better chance of success with experienced people in the important positions?

Hey, Scott Lobdell is down to one book a month now. That alone is a victory. Maybe Harras will finally have to not give him any more writing assignments after he runs Red Hood further into the ground.

Overall I like Snyder, King, Jurgens and Seeley staying on the Batverse side of things and it feels like the books will just organically grow into the new status quo for some reason. Otherwise until I see some real descriptions of concepts behind the titles not really overly interested in any of these titles just based on a marketing burst.

And so we have Barbara Gordon still as Batgirl. So much for the hopes of a return to the old continuity.

Can’t say I’m blown away by the old-new mismash going on above, but I can see a couple of books I’m definitely picking up and a couple more I’ll keep an eye on. That’s more interest than I was able to scrape up for Marvel post-Secret Wars.

Also, how the hell did DC managed to score Christopher Priest on Deathstroke?! That’s amazing.

Comics are synonymous with habits. For those of us who’ve been away, it might just be easier to maintain the habit than go out of the way to look in on DC’s characters again. Especially since such irrevocable damage has been done to them.

That includes the travesty of the cinematic universe.

Yep, I sure do remember Tom King, Christopher Priest, Hope Larson, Gene Luen Yang, Simon Oliver, Phil Jimenez, and Dan Abnett’s total of 0 comics in the New 52 launch.

Yes, many of these writers are *now* writing DCU books (though not Larson, Priest, Oliver, or Jimenez, let alone relatively new writers like Percy, Semper, or the Bensons) but there’s a lot of people with titles coming out this summer that weren’t at DC post-Flashpoint.

Sorry to see SECRET SIX, BATGIRL OF BURNSIDE, and DOCTOR FATE go (along with the promised second PREZ series, most likely), but turnover is inevitable. Sigh.
