Inktober 4 – Mr. Bones Dancing

Anyone  who knows me well, knows that I LOVE bones! This one was fun to draw. Since it is that time of year, maybe I will find more inspiration to draw Mr. Bones!

2. SkADaMo Day 2

Happy Dia De Los Muertos!

Actually, not sure that’s an appropriate salutation, but I do know that I love the art and culture of this Latino holiday! So in honor of the day and of all our dearly departed I thought I’d do a quick skeleton sketch… skeltch if you will.

Oh, and since this wee boy skeleton is so shyly presenting his gift, I thought maybe he’d like to toddle on over to Illustration Friday.

……………….

So, wow, quite a few ambitious sketchers decided to join in on the fun of SkADaMo! Welcome one and all!

Although there are absolutely no rules to this, (unless you count the rule that there are no rules,) there were a few questions.

Some wanted to know how to use the badge. I would say simply put the badge in the sidebar of your blog. If you want to link it up, maybe put the URL to the original SkADaMo post on my blog, so people can give it a gander and maybe join us: http://sketchedout.wordpress.com/2012/11/01/skadamo-2012/

Some wanted to know how we could keep track of each other’s posts as the days go by. Perhaps the folks who are joining could leave the URL where they will be posting their SkADaMo sketch, in the comments of this post and I will create a list that I will add to the end of each of my daily posts. (Please note that I will be out of town until Tuesday, so I probably won’t get to this until then. Thanks guys!)

How to organize the sketch posts? Perhaps we could also add the tag SkADaMo to each post, which will be the static link that I’ll use for the list of everyone.

If anyone has an idea of something that would work better, please let me know. This is just a very easy, breezy, unorganized thingy. So, pretty much anything goes. But if we can make it easier to keep in touch and be inspired by each other and root each other on, that is all the better!

And that my dears is the extent of my organizational skills! I am spent, spent I tell you! (0;

3. Mary Blair Day of the Dead

Here's my piece for
THE ICONOCLASTIC DEAD show with the Autumn Society!

We got to pick from real-life heroes (living or dead) to illustrate for our pieces.

I chose Mary Blair, because she was such an amazingly talented female artist who worked in animation! I am sure I am one of many women (and men!) working in animation today who look up to her in more ways than one : D

4. Answer: The skeleton was real

Keble College Chapel as viewed across the quad...

*Dear readers, you have inspired me to continue with one more year of questions. Thanks for the new subscriptions and the encouragement. The next year of questions starts tomorrow. Here’s this year’s last answer*

The skeleton was real.

One fearless thing. That’s all I wanted. One crazy-ass thing.

But I never thought it would happen the way it did. I never thought I’d jump. And the real kicker is? I know the real reason why and I’ll never tell. I guess you could say I took it with me to the grave. But I’m totally claustrophobic so it was more like taking it to the crematorium which is a way creepier sounding word than grave, but just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Since the world’s running out of places to bury people maybe it’ll catch on.

It all started at a football game. There was this guy. And there was my lying boyfriend. And, there was my sister’s raised eyebrows. For the first time in my college life something started that wouldn’t stop. It would follow me and put a smile on my face. And would have followed me until I was old and gray because when your jumpmaster is a red-headed, Irish, politically-incorrect joke cracker named Angus and his company mascot is a full-scale [whispered to be real] human skeleton named Winston, well, that crap sticks with you. I think of it every time I eat Giordano’s.

“Look. look. check. check. Pull.”

5. Bare Bones Contest

I wonder if Michael Paulus and I had the same anatomy professor in college

I thought  a skeletal study/sketch of a favorite 90′s Warner Bro’s cartoon would be a great spooky post for this week…but it still seems to lean towards cute (sigh). Can you guess who it is? This is pretty easy so let’s have fun with this one. First person who guesses who this character is get’s a free 8×10 copy to add to your Halloween decor.

Big Hint: I’m a girl…I’m tiny..I’m toony…we’re all a little looney..and in this cartooney they’re invading your TV..

Email me at [email protected] your mailing address and answer by the end of this week and I’ll announce the winner on Friday, or early next Monday. Good luck!

HAPPY MONDAY!

9. "No Bones About It"

This post may be a short one today. Mostly I wanted to share---yes, that's the right word. For I don't want to appear unseemly or unduly excited. The final proofed, edited and approved version of my picture book, "No Bones About It" has been sent to the printer. Yes, I know its official publication is still a few weeks away. But I must say, it feels pretty good to see it come this far. Are you kidding me? This is way too cool!

The book is the first of a series of anatomical rhymes designed to help kids learn about the human body. The series, which is called THE SUM OF OUR PARTS, will eventually cover several anatomical systems including the skeleton, muscles, skin, circulation, respiration and many others. The entire collection will be "kid-friendly" with just the right balance of technical content, humorous verses and anatomical factoids, brought to life through the playful illustrations of artist Eugene Ruble.

When "No Bones About It" finally hits the street, look for a press release on this blog and my website announcing the book's publication and launch. In the meantime, readers are most welcome to visit my website for more information about "Bones" and any of the rest of the series. Just look for the link to the THE SUM OF OUR PARTS on the right side of the website's main page.

Cheers!

11. 10 days to Halloween!

Oh my, I haven't planned my costume yet. Jessica found my old prom dress from the 80s and is wearing that now for her costume. She said she will go as "80s prom chick." Why does that make me feel so darn old?? I am now officially "vintage." Anyway, here's our Halloween "share" for today's post.

It's last year's Halloween postcard. Hey, I had to go into my archives of drawings and realized I have lots and lots of Halloween art! I love this piece. It was a departure from what I was doing at the time and pushed me into thinking more on a 3d scale. I found the skeleton guy at a yard sale, and I wanted to make a piece starring him. Of course, in my work, there is always a story, and this one emerged.
