1. Mole and Rat: A chancing friendship

National Friendship Day was originally founded by Hallmark as a promotional campaign to encourage people to send cards, but is now celebrated in countries across the world on the first Sunday in August. This post celebrates the friendship of two of our favorite characters from classic literature, Rat and Mole from The Wind in the Willows.

4. Thoroughly Modern Milly

Some designs take a long time to hatch - I've been meaning to work out a mole design for two years, but what with my book jobs and things, I've only just got round to it. Luckily I had made a little sketch at the time - in *shock horror* the back of a picture book...

I absolutely do not condone drawing in books, but this was an old battered ex-library copy which I picked up from a charity shop after a trip to the dentists, two bus rides away from the village. Happily my bus home stopped right outside a pub, so I popped in for a pint while I was waiting for it and read my book. It is an old favourite and I hadn't got a copy. It's the most beautiful story for children, dealing with bereavement and not at all mawkish or pro-religion of any kind.

Here, Mole is passing on the gift of making paper chain moles, which Badger in turn taught him. And finding myself with pencil but without sketch book, I drew a mole of my own on the endpaper and called her Milly.

In real life, moles are not at all the sweetly shy characters they are often portrayed as; they are quite fierce and territo

5. Mole & Mouse

Continuing with the mole study, here’s little mole with his mouse friend. This is a segment from a much larger scene, but it allows mole to be shown in some context besides just a study.  He’s turning into a fun character to draw. Oh. And so is little mouse!

7.

A spoonful of creativity a day
Day 5

Watch out folks - needle felting is very addictive.

I started a mole last night (which you can see next to the mug there) but in the end felt it was too big, so I put it aside. Ewan had asked for a koala bear, so I spent another afternoon stabbing at some roving..

Starting to look bear like...the ears were fun to shape..

Almost there...

Added some legs and black beads for the eyes...

Finished off with a little bit of stitiching to the face...

And as I am completely addicted, I had to make something else. This time it was a teeny tiny mole...

I love moles :)

I will do something different tomorrow - probably a simpler project that is a little less time intensive...but I do have to finish the Christmas scene that I started, so I will get to feed my needle felting addiction some time in the near future.

Cheerio!

Illustration Friday: Foggy

Mole loved to take long, hot showers but his glasses always fogged up afterwards...

cardboard tag, acrylic, ink and a foggy mole

Oh that felt good! I am not sure how long it has been since I last participated, but it feels like such a long time and I have missed it. It's such a fun exercise and a great way to take a break from work. I am off to look at the other submissions.

12. 138: Oils, 139: Acrylics, 140: Bees ATC

I finally found time to scan and upload! This is the first oil "painting" I've done, at my beginner Oils class on Monday where we learned to mix colours:

138oils

Not the greatest I know ... I scanned it in finally as I haven't had time to take a photo of it, so it's not the whole painting, only the size the scanner accepted but I think it gives a good idea of my first work in oils since 1976!!

I then attended my first acrylics beginner class and again we learned to mix colours and this was (part of) the result:

139acrylics

Yes yes I know, they are absolutely amateurish but it's baby steps that I'm taking here and I am scanning them in the spirit of uploading even the works that are far from perfect ... it's a learning process! This is also the first acrylic painting I've done since 1976 ... eeek.

And finally, Bearuh was kind enough to invite me to join the Monday Artday ATC group, so I decided to try my hand at an ATC tonight as I had time to doodle while mum watched sports on TV :). This was the result:

138bees

2.5 x 3.5 inches. I know that they are all very simplistic and experimental but I'm pretty fond of them as they are the first in what I see as a future filled with tons of educational fun! Hope you like them as much as I do -- take them in the spirit in which they were made ... tons of enjoyment sprinkled with loads of humour! Cheers.

P.S.: Thank you thank you thank you to everyone who has made such lovely comments on my last couple of drawings! And many apologies for my not being able to reply to comments or not visit your lovely sites as yet ... what with my mother being here and tons of work to catch up on I just haven't had the time, But I will as soon as I possibly can I promise. You are all wonderful and your feedback is SO much appreciated! Hugs to all of you!
