Here we go again! Marvel has a new direction and it's charging right at you this faall with an ambitious new slate called MARVEL NOW! Which they did already four years ago. And it was followed by All-New Marvel Now. And then All New All Different Marvel (ANAD). So, Marvel please check in with Stan and find some new words! Bravura. Gorilla. Defy. There are plenty! So when you google for a headline this is going to be hard. ON the other hand "Now" is eternal and Marvel is always changing, so maybe it's a meta suggestion for the eternal flux and evolution of life in the universe.

Just like in professional sports, comics often recruits talent from outside the U.S. Case in point, Marvel’s “gun for hire” Gabriele Dell’Otto. The Italian native started doing work for marvel’s European division in 1998. He officially began working for the core Marvel Comics line when he was brought on to draw & paint Secret War, written by mega-popular writer Brian Michael Bendis. After that, Dell’Otto produced a bunch of covers for the Annihilation crossover, and illustrated the mini-series X-Force: Sex & Violence.

Currently, Gabriele Dell’Otto is one of Marvel’s top artists, and you can see his work on the latest issues of the Spider-Verse cross-over, and Miracleman.

Here’s a link to the Italian fan-site for Gabriele Dell’Otto, if you’d like to browse more of his great artwork.

Michael Del Mundo is an artist who’s responsible for so many great comic book covers of late, but I didn’t realize, until recently, who he was. The new Marvel Now Elektra series features both cover art, and interiors by Del Mundo, and it’s received a ton of well deserved critical acclaim. In fact, he, and writer William H. Blackman have impressed Marvel so much with their work that they’ve been promised another project once Elektra ends.

Del Mundo has brought the same unconventional, and dynamic style to his interior artwork, that has made his covers so memorable. I’m looking forward to see what comes next for this exciting, young artist!

Michael Del Mundo is from the Philippines, and currently lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. You can follow his blog here.

Tradd Moore broke into the comics scene with the indy series The Strange Talent of Luther Strode, and it’s sequel The Legend of Luther Strode with writer Justin Jordan. His distinct, dynamic style, and liberal use of squash & stretch with his characters has quickly propelled Tradd Moore to the top of the mainstream comics world. He graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010, and jumped right into illustrating comics after that.

Today, Tradd Moore has a bonafide hit on his hands with his work on the new, revamped Ghost Rider with writer/artist Felipe Smith for Marvel Comics. He also provides cover art for other Marvel books, like Secret Avengers, and Deadpool. When he can find the time, he continues to work on independent comics like the new Image series Zero.

7. Marvel’s Second Wave is ‘All-New Marvel Now’, Starting with All-New Invaders

In an interview with delightful hero Brian Truitt of USA Today, Marvel have unveiled the branding for their next wave of comics. Called All-New Marvel Now, the two launch books will be All-New Invaders by James Robinson and Steve Pugh; as well as Matt Fraction and Joe Madiurera’s Inhumans.

anmn1

All-New Marvel Now will start in December, and certain current books will be renumbered to take that into account. As a result, Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers will feature an issue 24.NOW, for example. Which, yes, is ridiculous. Across the line, Marvel will be rebranding the design of their comics to match the covers you can see here, whilst Captain America seems set to be put in the spotlight (handy when there’s a new film coming out soon!)

All-New Invaders will see Cap reunited with Namor and the Original Human Torch – AS WELL AS The Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes. Written by James Robinson and drawn by Steve Pugh, this new ongoing series will send the team off to another war – one with the Kree, an alien race returning in force.

anmn2

Inhumans was already announced, and will also launch as part of All-New Marvel Now. Matt Fraction will write and Joe Mad will pencil the series, which looks to redevelop the concept of X-Men – a minority forced to band together in the face of overwhelming oppression – but for a franchise whose film rights aren’t owned by FOX.

anmn3

Avengers 24.NOW, by Hickman and Esad Ribic, will begin the new phase for Marvel on December 24th. Hey, that’s Christmas! Once Marvel send out larger versions of the covers, I’ll update the article accordinglu.

One of the most notable parts of the announcement, however, is that certain ANMN issues will come with a digital code which gives you access to the original run of comics. So readers can not only get these new comics – they can also get a look at the classic stories as well, to catch them up.

8. Uncanny Avengers Introduces ‘The M-Word’

Even allowing for the fact that we’re not supposed to like any of the characters in Uncanny Avengers (only this week, Wolverine calls Japanese mutant Sunfire “a walking atomic bomb” and nobody bats an eyelid – not even Sunfire, whose mother died in Hiroshima!), the book is going to startling lengths with some of the characters. Particularly Havok, who gives a speech in the most recent issue which is incredibly alarming.

uncanny aven Uncanny Avengers Introduces The M Word

The message of this speech has absolutely horrible implications. Whilst it’s possible to see what the character is going for – which writer Rick Remender may or may not be intending to associate into the scene – the actual content of his speech is shameful. Hopefully the book is intending for readers to side against the character, but it’s remarkably hard to tell at this point.

The idea that ‘mutant’ is an ‘m-word’ is comprehensively wrong. The idea that equality is reached via erasing differences is wrong. And the message this scene puts across is that minorities – for, of course, mutancy in the Marvel Universe is used as a metaphor for the struggles of persecuted minorities round the world, be they of a different sexual orientation, gender, race, religion – should want to become invisible and fit into their surroundings. It’s a message that minorities should feel ashamed of who they are, and seek to become, quote “normalised”.

If the word ‘mutant’ is swapped out in this scene for “gay” or “African-American” or “Muslim”, the scene becomes downright offensive. Hopefully, this should all be leading towards some kind of twist of some kind – but at the moment, it’s astonishing how brave this book is in making the lead characters appear to be utterly awful people.

9. Review: Captain Marvel #11 – Warp Speed

The relaunch of Captain Marvel, with Carol Danvers in the title role, started off very shakily. The first six-issues told a time-travel story which eventually teased together parts of the character’s origin in a way which wasn’t particularly as entertaining or dynamic as was hoped. Writer Kelly Sue DeConnick had previously proven herself to have a great voice and sense of humour in her work – but the first arc of this book didn’t give her much chance to do that. It felt like a side-story, blocking us from getting to the real adventures.

CaptainMarvel2 Quinones WEB Review: Captain Marvel #11 Warp Speed

Which is why I’m delighted that ever since issue #6, the book has picked up massively. Taking the character back to present-day gives her a chance to be far more contemporary, and build up a far stronger individual voice. She can be funnier, because there’s more for her to react to, and she can build up a lasting supporting cast. Issue #11, out this week, shows just what the book should’ve been from the start. It’s immediately likeable, with instinctive art and a freeform story which segues between multiple interesting sub-plots.

The best of these storylines is one which sees Captain Marvel grounded. If she uses her power of flight, then she’ll start to build up permanant brain damage – which gives a twist which the character has needed for a long time. There’s nothing inherently interesting about a character who can fly, who also works as a pilot. If they crash the plane, it doesn’t matter, because they can always step out the cockpit and FLOAT AWAY. But giving her this twist means the character suddenly lives a much more high-stakes lifestyle. There’s a more immediate tension now we know she’s not safe at all times.

There’s a line in the issue – which is scripted by Christopher Sebala – in which somebody asks Cap “what’s it like to not be good at something for once?” That line captures the issue, and gives readers further motivation to root for the hero. Her frustration at not being able to get in the air also leads to many of the funniest moments of the issue. It feels like the book has now got a real grip on the voice of the lead character, giving her a lightness of tone that makes her more relatable and entertaining than before (she has previously had a tendency to be a little boring).

Filipe Andrade’s artwork – boosted, as everything is, by Jordie Bellaire’s colour, is a brilliant fit for the book. He’s quirky and left of centre without sacrificing storytelling ability. There’s a much more sudden sense of motion in the pages, but I also really like his refusal to cop out for easy spectacle. The sequencing in the pages works fantastically because he doesn’t use gigantic splashes and overwrought hero poses in each panel. In fact, he keeps the action sequences very tight, with smaller panels which keep an eye on the lead.

There’s a sequence where Captain Marvel blasts a group of guards with her energy, but Andrade doesn’t decide to have this take up half the page. Instead, he sets it in a small page-width panel at the top of, and sets the action at a distance from the reader. Whilst we still get to see Captain Marvel wipe out a group of goons, Andrade’s decision to keep the move locked within a single panel emphasises how normal and unexpected a day this is for the lead character. Even during sequences where Cap is on a flying motorbike and racing round like a lunatic, Andrade refuses to make this into a spectacle – you could replace the bike with a transit van and the pages would still work. It’s a small touch, and perhaps not something Andrade is consciously doing, but it adds to the relatability of the main character.

The narrative as a whole is very well constructed, too. Some of the supporting characters could come across as bringing a little too whimsy to proceedings – Cap makes friends with a young girl who is slightly too bluntly inspired by living next door to a superhero – but this is alrgely averted. The subplots are handled directly, by having Danvers walk between them – again, there’s an emphasis on how she’s having to live a very normalised life, and when put in a normalised setting her power and personality come through far more strongly. It’s all handled very nicely indeed.

Captain Marvel is rapidly rising in quality, emphasising the normalcy of the character’s life whilst also pushing the idea of her as inspirational and good fun. DeConnick’s voice comes through more strongly, and the whole thing feels a lot more natural and warm. Assisted by an excellent creative team, including Sebala, whose dialogue is witty and light, she’s set up a new dynamic which will hopefully stick with the character for a long time to come.

10. SXSW: Marvel Make 700 Digital Issues Free, Announce Weekly Wolverine Series, Reveal Project Gamma

This is all just breaking!

Marvel are at South By Southwest right now, announcing some new digital projects. The first is ‘Marvel Infinite’ comics, Marvel’s own digital service for comic books. It appears that Marvel will be making 700 of their #1 issues available for free, so new readers can try the first issue before seeing if they want to continue on and buy the rest. Also announced is a new weekly digital Wolverine series called ‘Japan’s Most Wanted’, which will be headed up by Jason Aaron but overseen by a number of different writers. And finally, they’ve revealed that ‘Project Gamma’ will be an adaptive audio addition to their digital comics, putting sound to their digital stories.

gamma SXSW: Marvel Make 700 Digital Issues Free, Announce Weekly Wolverine Series, Reveal Project Gamma

So! Let’s break that down as best as possible. The first news involves Marvel Infinite, which was previously revealed to be the new name for Marvel’s digital comics program. As part of their rebrand, which Todd spoke about a few days ago, Marvel are going to make a series of issues available for free to readers. These will be the first issues of every respective series – Guardians of the Galaxy, for example – offering readers a chance to try the books before they decide to pick up the following issues and start following the books proper.

However! This will be a limited offer from Marvel, and it looks like the books will go back to regular pricing – ranging from $1.99 to $3.99 – so you have until Tuesday.

Wolverine: Japan’s Most Wanted is a digital series, which will be released weekly. The first issue will be out in July, with Jason Aaron overseeing the storyline. Jason Latour will also be writing, with Paco Diaz on art. CBR have an interview with the creative team, and Marvel have offered a solicitation for the series:

Marvel Comics’ latest innovative Infinite Comic is here! Wolverine stars in a weekly adventure from the mind of super star writer Jason Aaron (WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN, THOR) that pits Wolverine against classic villains and a threat unlike any he has ever faced!

The Wolverine series will last 13 weeks, and then be followed by three other stories, which will all also last for 13 weeks each.

And finally, Project Gamma. This will be another addition to Marvel’s digital comics, where readers can add audio to their comics as they read them. The sound will be fully adaptive, with no loops. It’ll move with you, in essence, following you as you follow the story. There’ll be music played which changes depending on location and character. There’s no official date for this yet, but Marvel plan to roll this out later in the year. Rolling Stone seem to know a lot about this, actually. You can also find a video from Marvel here.

Kieron Gillen is already furiously writing an email to Kenickie’s manager as we speak, asking for clearance rights.

11. Review: X-Men Legacy #6 FEATURING PIXIE

X-Men Legacy completes the first arc, with writer Si Spurrier taking its lead character – which, I still can’t really believe, is Professor X’s son Legion – into a new direction, having thoroughly established him as protagonist worth following. He’s joined by artist Jorge Molina, who has spent the last year or so drawing essentially every X-Men book going, and is always a pleasure to see. This has been a scattered, easily distracted book (much like its lead character), but also a very funny, wonderfully melodramatic piece of work, and the best X-Men book around right now.

xmenlegacy Review: X Men Legacy #6 FEATURING PIXIE

The first arc has worked hard to make sure that Legion is more than just a plot device – which feels a little out of character, given that’s basically all Legion has ever ever been, but still. To do so, Spurrier has leant heavily on the character’s Scottish upbringing, giving him not only a Rebus accent but also an attitude which is surly and independent. Like Rebus! He’s an annoying lead at times to spend time with, having a lot of new-age mantras in his head which are designed to help him keep his wonky powers under control. The character balances self-help with anti-heroics in each issue, which is mainly fun but sometimes irritating. It’s obviously an important part of the story, but Legion’s road to recovery can be a little tedious to read about sometimes. Not often, but sometimes.

But more than the main character, it’s the world Spurrier has built around his lead which is where the book starts to sing. From the cameos from off-centre X-Men like Frenzy and Chamber (who, given he is essentially a comic book version of Si Spurrier, gets all the best lines) to the global sweep of the narrative and the psychological elements of Legion’s powers, Spurrier quickly make sit clear that anything is possible in his story. He can spend an issue inside Legion’s head (literally) or in Asia, and it feels like a natural part of the story. The book can go into flights of whimsy or be brutally realistic. Rather than being stuck at a school in America, the series has a more escapist approach to the X-Men, which finds new real-world analogies to play around with, dismantle, and reassemble.

The central metaphor of the X-Men has been explained and explored to death over the years, but X-Men Legacy takes some of the old ideas and views them through a more contemporary filter, which suddenly makes the threat of prejudice and anger seem much more potent. The villain of these first six issues is one of the most vicious we’ve seen in years, a new creation who is genuinely scary and horrible to see in action. Issue 5 – the standout issue of the series so far – deals almost exclusively with establishing the villain, and Spurrier makes his origin just recognisable enough to be scary whilst also making it wonderfully ridiculous. The fantasy is stripped out entirely for a moment, as we focus on the evolution of a misguided child into a fully formed adult horror. He’s ultimately dealt with a little too suddenly – issue 6 runs out of space, it feels – but he’s a fascinating new character, and one I hope to see again.

That narrative over these six issues has been talked about a lot. Spurrier’s story does get easily distracted, with many different tangents suddenly appearing from nowhere, with some leading to a more rewarding place than others. For the most part, these drifts in focus have worked in favour of the book – it helps that Spurrier has the ability to point to his multi-personalitied lead and say the story is just mirroring Legion himself – but there have been some times when the story has wandered around, a little lost, for a few pages at a time. In taking time to develop Legion, the book has had to hold off on revealing the central premise which will push the story forward over the next few months, which has hurt the momentum a little. Hopefully with Legion now established, and a proper premise offered to readers, the book will have a firmer direction as it heads into the second arc.

PIXIE PARAGRAPH: There’s been a swarm of British writers towards Pixie over the last few years, with the pink-haired wonder attracting the attention of Kieron Gillen, Mike Carey, and now Spurrier. It’s meant that the character now actually has a Welsh accent, although she has yet to ask anybody what’s occurring. She appears in issue #6 for a page or two, and I am of course utterly furious with Spurrier for what he does to her. I won’t say what it is, but I will say that Spurrier at least manages in about six words to nail the character’s dialogue. She sounds just like Joanna Page, which is unanimously agreed to be the only way people should ever write Pixie. So well done for writing her properly, Spurrier – but I remain furious at her treatment. Compensation is demanded!

Issue #6 of X-Men Legacy is an incredible read, filled with fully-developed characters, funny jokes, exciting drama, and genuine tension. I don’t really know how Legion has become the centre of the best written X-Men book… but X-Men Legacy is one of the triumphs of the Marvel Now initiative, and the best X-Men book you can buy right now. It’s a wee wonder.

12. Marvel’s Next Big Thing: Jeph Loeb’s Nova

The conference calls are back at The Beat! Last night Jeph Loeb participated in a phonecall with member of the comics press to discuss the coming launch of a new Nova series – starring a new Nova. The series will be drawn by Ed McGuinness, and here’s Marcos Martin’s cover for issue #1:

nova1 Marvels Next Big Thing: Jeph Loebs Nova

Sam Alexander, the new Nova, has appeared in a few comics over the last year, most notably his role in Marvel’s first-ever ‘Infinite Comics’ story by Mark Waid and Stuart Immonen. He precipitated the Avengers Vs X-Men crossover, and was offered Avengers membership by Thor at the end of the series. But Loeb explained that this is the end-point for Nova’s story, and the new series will rewind back to before Sam even knows what a Nova is. The aim is to pitch Nova as a hero in the vein of Peter Parker – a young, inexperienced, but upbeat figure, who tries to use his new powers for good. He doesn’t even have the helmet yet.

nova2 Marvels Next Big Thing: Jeph Loebs Nova

The first issue will be set in a small town in Arizona, where the character lives, and will ultimately throw him into space to fight giant, overpowering threats far beyond his abilities – villains who will really test the character. Loeb noted the popularity of the Sam Alexander character in Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon series, saying that the journey for the comic character will ultimately lead him towards the same personality and confidence of his animated counterpart.

When I go to conventions now, the amount of young kids who talk about how they love the show. When I ask them who their favourite characters are, it always comes out as Spider-Man is their favourite, and Nova second.

I asked him about if this has made him consider the title in terms of an all-ages property:

I don’t know that it was as much in my mind as the fact we we were telling a story about a 15 to 16 year-old kid. Part of the Nova story from the beginning, is that he was a very fun character – Rich Rider loved being Nova. I don’t think we’re necessarily writing for an all-ages audience… we’re writing for the Marvel audience.

nova3 Marvels Next Big Thing: Jeph Loebs Nova

From Arizona, Nova will then be moving on to outer space, where he’ll come into contact with Brian Michael Bendis‘ Guardians of the Galaxy – Loeb says no plans for the Annihilators as yet, but they may well show up later – and this will be apparently a very important part of Marvel over the next few months. We’ve seen that Guardians of the Galaxy will interact with Iron Man, and that All-New X-Men’s story will have some kind of ramification for the team. This is all a deliberate way of meshing the Universe together, Loeb says – when attempting to establish a character like Nova, it’s important that they’re visible. We’ll likely be seeing the character show up in a variety of books over the next few months.

nova4 Marvels Next Big Thing: Jeph Loebs Nova

No plans yet for any more Infinite Comics ventures, but Loeb was very open to the idea.

Finally, in terms of established Nova concepts returning? Loeb was very careful not to give too much away, although there will be a new, rebuilt Nova corps (of a kind, anyway) coming back into the book eventually, as Sam gets used to his powers, the legacy he’s inheriting from Rich Rider, and the importance of the Nova Corps in the Universe. At all times, Loeb spoke glowingly of Rich Rider as a character, and how the shadow of the character will loom over Sam at all times, driving him to be a better Nova.

Nova #1 will be released by Marvel in February, from the creative team of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness.

13. Marvel Reveal Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers Lineup

By Steve Morris

Via that very best of methods: the Dustin Weaver giganti-cover. The covers for issues 1-3 of Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers relaunch have been revealed by Marvel today, establishing that more X-Men have moved over to Cap’s Crew. While there are no surprises about which members of the Avengers movie cast made it into the series (all of them), the cover does still hold a few surprises. So! Who’re The Avengers?

504626bb60f3e Marvel Reveal Jonathan Hickmans Avengers Lineup

Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Hulk and Thor are all members of the Avengers – unsurprisingly – and they’re joined be fellow non-surprises Spider-Man and Wolverine. But also in amongst the shiny heroes are Sunspot and Cannonball from the New Mutants, as well as Captain Marvel, Spider-Woman and Falcon. This represents perhaps the first time that two minority characters males have been on the main Avengers at the same time, I believe, although that still feels a bit of a low ratio for what’s meant to be a world-spanning team. No sign of Redwing yet either, which is a worry.

There’s also some whizzy technology in the background, suggesting that Hickman will be basing the team in Nick Fury’s helicarrier. The most intriguing part, however, looks to be the mystery character on the far left, silhouetted by the explosion Steve Rogers is manfully walking away from. For my money, this looks like it’s meant to be Shang Chi, but.. well, it could be anybody really. Anybody else got a better guess in mind?

Hickman, artist Jerome Opena and colourist Dean White will start the series off in December. There are still several more characters yet to be revealed as team-members, so don’t lose hope yet, Jarvis fans!

14. Marvel release a first look at All-New X-Men #1

5033aff952ce4 tm Marvel release a first look at All New X Men #1

By Steve Morris

Stuart Immonen’s artwork is one of the key selling points to, well, anything he is involved with, and All-New X-Men #1 is no exception. The premise of the book is that the original five members of the X-Men – Angel, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman and Beast – have come to the present for some reason (no, there’s no sign of other founding X-Men Shortpack and Sage at this point in time). They are in the present, and they are… in the present. And Stuart Immonen is drawing it! So now you know the premise of the series in its entirety.

The regardless point being, Marvel have released some of Immonen’s pencils for the first issue of the series, written by Brian Michael Bendis. And unsurprisingly, they’re spiffing, corking, and several other 1960s adjectives.

The first page shows us the Jean Grey school, Wolverine’s semi-creepy tribute to his friend’s dead wife, who is now 16 and about to stare him right back in the face. But before he has time to sleep with her and freak us all out, it looks like the team are going to first endure some face-time with Beast. Which is probably going to be especially weird for Beast. You can also see a few students running round in the background, which reveals that Pixie has moved to Westchester along with the others. Yep, Utopia is doomed. Toad is also busy, uh, washing a tree. Cyclops Jr will probably blast him in the face in a moment or two.

The third page revealed shows Beast talking to the younger X-Men, who look like the Famous Five. Look at Jean’s adorable haircut! Shame she’s about a year away from murdering billions of people, isn’t it? If young Beast is scared now, just wait till he hears about the repeated genocides his older self has been enjoying over the past few years. And let’s not even get started on Trish Trilby! Ominous times are ahead for you, McCoy. This appears to be page 20 of the first issue, so lord only knows what the first 17 pages are going to be made up of.

And as a final note, here’s the interconnected cover for the first two issues, which sees all your favourite X-Men scowling at you.

15. Journey Into Mystery gets New Creative Team, Focus, Heroine

By Steve Morris

Excellent news has come in from Marvel today! I refuse to be objective, because today comes that announcement that Journey Into Mystery WILL continue, as I previously reported, with the new creative team of Kathryn Immonen and Valerio Schiti coming onboard as of issue #646. Alongside the new creative team comes a new focus, as the series switches from following Kid Loki on his magical exploits, and instead turns to the swashbuckling swordplay of Sif.

Which means Marvel now have comics spotlighting Captain Marvel, Dazzler, Red She-Hulk, and now Sif. There’s some momentum gathering there, isn’t there? Here’s the cover, which I think is by Stephanie Hans.

phpE2rstZJIM2011646 DC11 Journey Into Mystery gets New Creative Team, Focus, Heroine

Immonen previously wrote a Hellcat miniseries for Marvel, as well as the modern classic Pixie Strikes Back, which is one of the best stories ever told by Marvel. Her focus on Sif means that Kieron Gillen’s grip on Kid Loki may well continue, but it also gives Immonen the chance to flesh the character out. Perhaps most strongly characterised by the Thor movie from a few years ago, Immonen notes that

One of the really interesting things about Sif to me is that she’s defined by absence, with her lover, Thor, and brother, Heimdall, always away from her

The series will see Sif embark on a new mission to define herself as a warrior, which brings her into conflict with a lot of old Asgardian lore, and allows Immonen to play around with monsters and swordplay. In the liveblog, she talks about how daunting it is to follow such a fan-favourite run, but has some interesting ideas about how her run with the series is going to play out. Particularly interesting is her suggestion about the predestination inherent in the Asgardian characters. There’s always going to be an endpoint at ‘Ragnarok’, so how much of their lives is basically spent treading water before that happens?

I see a similarity between Sif and Loki because neither of them can ever be Thor. I think that has more effect on her then she’ll admit. She’s been told she’s capable of anything, but at the end of the day, she will never be Thor. It’s a matter of finding out how to be enough anyway.

The first issue with Sif in the lead, issue #646, will be released in November. And hey – it’s $2.99

16. Marvel Showcase Fraction’s Fantastic Four and FF – But Defenders is Cancelled

By Steve Morris

Marvel have spent this week showing off shiny covers for their Marvel NOOOWWWWWW!!! rebranding, and I’ll gather them all together at the end of the week (Friday, just so you know) for you to look into. But USA Today have today revealed the first cover for Matt Fraction and Mike Allred’s ‘FF’ series and, well…

ff now 02 Marvel Showcase Fractions Fantastic Four and FF But Defenders is Cancelled

So the book is heading in a radically new direction, you can see. Not only does the focus seem to have moved away from the students enrolled at Reed Richards’ ‘Future Foundation’, but it’s moved towards Ant Man, Medusa, She-Hulk, and… a woman wearing a Thing costume.

This sounds like exactly the kind of project which would play to Fraction and Allred. Apparently the new female character is called ‘Miss Thing’, which means she’ll likely become an instant fan-favourite amongst camp people. And can you even imagine how exciting the world is, now that we know Mike Allred is going to be drawing She-Hulk EVERY MONTH? These are golden times.

Over on the Fraction/Mark Bagley Fantastic Four title, it looks like Valeria and Franklin Richards are going to head back to their family for some cosmic adventuring, too. Fraction seems set on making this a big adventure series, with all six members of the Fantastic Four back together in the same book.

Now for the sad news. The article also confirms that Fraction’s Defenders – which had a massive decline in sales figures – will be concluding with issue #12 in November. From one She-Hulk to another, and one team to two teams. Sad to see the book go, but it’ll be interesting to see what this means for Marvel’s lineup next year. Will Dr Strange or Iron Fist show up somewhere else, now? Is this the last time we’ll get to see a Defenders title?

17. Rick Remender on Captain America, Simon Spurrier on… X-Men?

Well look, news is flying out the internet like four and twenty blackbirds from a regal pie. Following USA Today’s teaser images showing Matt Fraction on Fantastic Four come two more images, this time teasing what look to be Captain America NOW and X-Men NOW.

1344002104 Rick Remender on Captain America, Simon Spurrier on... X Men?

iFanboy have the Captain America teaser image, which places Rick Remender and John Romita Jr on the title this November. This is, of course, coming as Ed Brubaker starts to cycle away from Marvel and towards more creator-owned work, as his long run on Cap ends later this year. Some sites are suggesting this teaser is actually for Winter Soldier, but it’s unlikely that Brubaker would leave Marvel completely, and so suddenly. This will be the Captain America relaunch.

legacy marvelnow 561 Rick Remender on Captain America, Simon Spurrier on... X Men?

Spurrier’s image on MTV Geek, meanwhile, looks to be playing off X-Men Legacy, the Mike Carey/Christos Gage book which has a terrible title. If Marvel were looking to calm down their X-Output, then it’d be an excellent idea for them to replace the cancelled Legacy with something else. Rumours still abound that Brian Wood’s excellent run on the current adjectiveless X-Men may be coming to an end already, which would seem to be the best place for this creative team – if true.

Spurrier will be joined on this book, whatever it is, by artist Tan Eng Huat, and will likely string together some incredible adjectives before we even make it past the first panel. Very exciting news for X-Men fans, because Spurrier’s X-Club miniseries was brilliant.

Any minute now, Heidi is going to post a teaser image with ‘TIDY’ on it. I can feel it in my bones. Stay steady, Pixie-fans!

18. Fraction, Bagley and Allred are on the Fantastic Four

The final teaser image for Marvel’s week of NOW! has gone up on the USA Today’s website, revealing that Matt Fraction will be writing a relaunch of both Fantastic Four and the FF. Joining him will be Mark Bagley and Mike Allred.

1343999249 Fraction, Bagley and Allred are on the Fantastic Four

Bagley will draw the Fantastic Four series while Mike Allred will draw FF, which follows the ‘Future Foundation’ school set up by Reed Richards during Jonathan Hickman’s soon-concluding run with the team. MIKE! ALLRED! Dunno about you, but I always feel a compulsion to shout his name out like a cheerleader and wave my pom-poms.

This will be slightly worrying for fans of Bagley’s Icon series ‘Brilliant’, as there’s no word yet on if this announcement will affect the shipping of the book/mean the book has been cancelled. It does mean, however, that Marvel aren’t going to rename the team ’The Uncanny Fantastic Four’ or ‘FF Avengers’. So there’s another trend bucked by the First Family of Comics!

The teaser image above only relates to FF, I know. USA Today say they have the second one, so we’re just going to have to trust them until they decide to actually put it online. You wouldn’t have had this delay if you’d just sent the image to us, Marvel!

This means we now have confirmation for Uncanny Avengers, New Avengers, Avengers, Iron Man, Hulk, Fantastic Four, FF, Thor, Deadpool, and All-New X-Men as part of Marvel NOW! That’s half the books, with another half yet to be announced. Anyone for a solo PIXIE series? Time to make some noise if there is! Let’s lead a charge! Get your pom-poms out.

19. Mark Waid and Leinil Francis Yu are Indestructable (writing Hulk)

By Steve Morris

Continuing Mark Waid’s seeming obsession with the in- prefix, Marvel’s third of what will presumably be five teasers revealing their upcoming ‘Marvel NOW!’ books has been revealed. He’ll be teaming up this November with artist Leinil Francis Yu, for what is likely to be a new Incredible Hulk relaunch. The news comes from CBR, which means we have to put up with that little obnoxious ‘CBR exclusive!’ tag which we all hate so well.

1343772981 Mark Waid and Leinil Francis Yu are Indestructable (writing Hulk)

This is the third Avenger to be given a relaunched solo series after AvX concludes, following the apparent Thor and Iron Man creative teams announced earlier this week. Hulk only relaunched itself recently, with Jason Aaron trying out a new run which saw Banner as the monster and Hulk as the desperate hero. Which, well, that’s had mixed reviews. Next time’s the charm?

Oh, and if the Marvel NOW! promotional image from Joe Quesada is any indication… Hulk’s going to be wearing some armour. No sign of She-Hulk Jennifer Walters yet, but rest assured that I’ll leap onto the internet, keyboard blazing, as soon as there is even the barest indication that she might show up somewhere.

20. Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic are Worthy (to write Thor)

By Steve Morris

Some of you are going to try and burst my bubble on this with some crazy nonsense babbletalk about how this is ‘clearly a Thor relaunch’ but DAMMIT, you’re not going to change my mind. The second Marvel teaser of the week reveals that Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic will ABSOLUTELY be the creative team for a new WARREN WORTHINGTON III solo series. I do not accept anybody who says this is a Thor title.

marvelnow teasernew3 02 Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic are Worthy (to write Thor)

Sometimes the sinister mutant known as Archangel but more typically the golden boy of Charles Xavier’s army called Angel, Warren Worthington has really been through the wringer recently. First he gave in to the Archangel persona, then he had sex with Psylocke, and then he got murdered and a new soul grew inside his dead body. Ai ai ai.

No no, stop saying that Thor is considered to be one of the only people ‘worthy’ of wielding his hammer, Mjolnir and therefore this title refers to him. You’re really harshing my buzz. The rest of the World may have decided that Jason Aaron is going to write a new Thor series for Esad Ribic to draw, but I will never accept this as anything other than a new series for Angel. The X-Men franchise could always use another series!

If it is a Thor series, it would be interesting to see if it’s a solo title, or if a group of characters are being tied together into a new team. There are a number of characters tangentially connected to Thor, after all, and they’ve got fans too, don’t they? You could potentially fit in Valkrie, Sif (remember she’s prominent in the film), Beta Ray Bill and Dani Moonstar, among others.

Of course this is all irrelevant, because it’s a Warren Worthington book. DEFINITELY.

21. Marvel Cancel NINE Titles!

Marvel Now! was always going to claim some victims before relaunching, and now it’s made revealed (through that most sneaky of revealers, the solicitations listing) that nine of their current books will die in order for Marvel Now! to live.

UNCX020 COVER FINAL 2 Marvel Cancel NINE Titles!

Those nine titles are: Captain AmericaFantastic FourFFIncredible HulkInvincible Iron ManNew MutantsThe Mighty ThorUncanny X-Men and X-Men Legacy.

This isn’t completely surprising in every case, because Brian Michael Bendis already said that Uncanny would end and several of the other books were winding up long-standing runs with big name creators. Matt Fraction was already set to leave Invincible Iron Man, while Jonathan Hickman and Ed Brubaker were both already known to be leaving the Fantastic Four titles and Captain America, respectively.

What does this mean for the characters? Well, Captain America, Thor and X-Men Legacy’s Rogue are all in a team together anyway, while Iron Man will surely find a place in one of the Avengers titles. But what of the Fantastic Four? They’ve completely dropped off the map, apparently, and the World’s Greatest Superhero Family look set to pack up their bags for a one-way trip to the one place they’ve never been before: comic-book limbo.

FF1998611 cov Marvel Cancel NINE Titles!

It’s interesting to note that most of these books were handled by the ‘Architects’ of Marvel, and that some low-selling titles like the beloved Journey Into Mystery have survived this new purge. Dan Slott’s Amazing Spider-Man also escapes the destruction, so that much-teased ‘big change’ in issue #700 isn’t going to see the book cancelled, thankfully.

Three X-Men books are chopped, including flagship Uncanny X-Men. Which is a massive surprise, because most were predicting that the pointless titles – adjectiveless X-Men and Astonishing X-Men – would be the two to go. New Mutants was expected to go, and does. But it’s still surprising to see just how big a change Marvel seem to be making. What new books are going to replace these ones, which surely were the backbone of the Marvel Universe?
