We had a fantastic time at the Cloudy Collection show at Minneapolis’s Pink Hobo Gallery, and the rest of the weekend at MIX was so much fun!
But like the fun weekend, all good things must end. So instead of moping, we’re excited to release our celebration of the endtimes in our 2012 Calendar of the Impending Apocalypse. Each month was made by a different artist - January through December were made by Phil McAndrew, Jaime Zollars, Ana Benaroya, Joe Alterio, Adam Koford, Vincent Stall, Joe Lambert, David Huyck, Kali Ciesemier, Luke Pearson, Emory Allen, and Amy Crehore, repectively. Check them out!

Phil McAndrew Lays It Down For Those Who Need It Layed:
In a new blog post Phil McAndrew reminds us illustrators what is important and how we can get to where we want to be. I for one needed the kick in the ass. Here is just one of his “tips” click through to read the whole thing.
If you don’t enjoy drawing enough to want to do it every single day then you should probably find another line of work! I don’t know about other freelancers, but I work seven days a week.
Add a CommentCreativity is a muscle. If you want that muscle to stay strong you’ve got to use it every day. If you fall out of the habit of drawing every day it can be really tough to pick it up again. Muscles weaken much faster than they grow. So don’t stop drawing ever! Take a sketchbook with you everywhere. Keep a sketchbook next to your bed. Keep one in your backpack or hand bag. Delete Angry Birds from your phone and spend your time doodling while you’re waiting in line at the bank or riding the subway from 181st Street to Union Square. Drawing is your religion.

Phil McAndrew offers up solid advice for young cartoonists and illustrators. From my own experience, every word is true, but especially this:
I’ve tried many different methods of self promotion. I’ve sent out postcards in the mail, I’ve tried shmoozing at conventions, I’ve sent cold emails and have considered cold calling art directors (I’m still considering it). The most effective thing I’ve done has actually been the simplest: Draw awesome stuff and put it on the internet. Do this for a while and good things will happen.

At TCAF I snagged a copy of Phil McAndrew’s latest minicomic Feral Pizza. That Feral Pizza cartoon. Oh man. I chuckle every time I look at it. Phil’s non sequitur sense of humour and inky illustration style are like some unlikely combination of B. Kliban and Ronald Searle, two of my heroes. Cartoons from Feral Pizza can be seen at Phil’s Flickr page, along with countless others.
Phil also plugs away each month at Picture Book Report, illustrating scenese from From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

I've been noodling with this for a little while, working on it in between other projects. I might touch it up a little bit still, but it's basically finished. It's an illustration of a bunch of my favorite film directors enjoying a movie together. Can you recognize any of them? I just finished working on a brand new comic. Click here to read it, I hope it makes you smile!
I was originally planning to not put this one on the internet, making it a “print only” thing, but I like giving stuff away for free too much. Anyways, I’ll still be printing this up as an 18 page mini comic sometime in the next week or two and will have it for sale at SPX, along with the print version of the comic I drew last month, The Secret Thoughts of Harold Lawrence Windcrampe.

My friend Natasha and I started a little project a while ago. We've been doing it purely for fun! Natasha draws pictures of girls and then I draw pictures of boys for them to date. Sometimes we switch it up and I draw girls and she draws boys. Here are a few of the characters I've come up with so far...

I've added a label cloud!
I admit I wasn't too comfortable playing with the html and I'm still trying to decide where on blog to have the cloud.
If you're interested, the code came from WebWeaver's World. I followed the directions exactly, and hey, it worked! There are some things you can change; for example, I set it to show only labels I have used at least 10 times, and also changed the maximum and minimum font sizes. The instructions are very clear.
