5. Review: American Ultra asks “What if Jason Bourne was a stoner?”

Sometimes films take on heavy concepts: life, death, space, time travel. Other times, they take a simpler approach. Sure, it’s hard to argue that American Ultra is doing anything profound or meaningful, but it’s also hard not to have fun with a movie where the primary question seems to be: What if Jason Bourne was a neurotic pothead? 7. Jesse Eisenberg Compares Being at SDCC to Genocide

jesse-eisenberg-lex-luthor2

This weekend, actor Jesse Eisenberg, who plays Lex Luthor in next year’s Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, was seen at the premiere of The End of the Tour, a film about the release of David Foster Wallace’s 20th century existential tomb of a novel, Infinite Jest.  In an interview with the Associated Press, Eisenberg was asked about what he thought of his first comic con experience, to which he replied:

“It is like being screamed at by thousands of people. I don’t know what the experience is throughout history, probably some kind of genocide. I can’t think of anything that’s equivalent.”

“I can’t think of anything that’s equivalent,” he says, as he stands in line being screamed at by fans and paparazzi, berated eternally by the strobe of 200 watt light bulb flashes.  I understand that comic con is a stressful experience for all parties, especially the talent, but come on.  Eisenberg’s statement sounds like slight hyperbole for an A-List actor– not to mention the fact that it’s an offensive statement to make in the first place.

8. Jesse Eisenberg confirms he’ll be at Hall H

jesse-eisenberg-lex-luthor2

Toss this into the “no duh” pile, but it’s good to get confirmation about Warner Bros’ plans for SDCC.

Speaking to the folks at Collider regarding his upcoming road-trip drama The End of the Tour (which looks promising, by the way), our newest Lex Luthor, Jesse Eisenberg confirmed that he will indeed be at the mega-event in just a few weeks, and he plans to spend a significant amount of time in Hall H:

I’ll be there…I think I’m there for the hour I’m on the stage.

Eisenberg also had further praise for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice screenwriter Chris Terrio, who jumped onto the project after Ben Affleck was cast as Batman and completely rewrote the existing script:

I like what this writer does, this guy Chris Terrio. He wrote this movie we did and I just think he’s so great. He’s such a good writer. I like what he does with characters, I like what he does with wordplay and cleverness. I like anything he writes.

I’m certain that given Marvel Studios not appearing in San Diego this year, that the Warner Bros panel will indeed be the talk of the entire Con. Here’s hoping whatever they show, a full trailer seems almost a certainty, gets released online right away and not in some lower quality bootleg form first.

We’re only a few weeks away, it should be a madhouse!

11. Jesse Eisenberg with a bald head = Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

lex-luthor

Via Entertainment Weekly, here’s your first look at Jesse Eisenberg with a clean shaven dome for his role as Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Director Zack Snyder shared a few words on Eisenberg in the role:

He’s not any of the Lexes that you’ve seen, that’s for sure, other than him being a captain of industry and one person to the world and another person to himself. And bald, of course. Our Lex is disarming and he’s not fake. He says what he believes and he says what’s on his mind. If you can unravel the string and decipher what he means, it’s all there.

More importantly, this tips me off to the idea that we’ll be seeing a trailer very soon, as they had been keeping Eisenberg’s head under wraps (literally) for months. Now that this cat is out of the bag, those WonderCon trailer debut rumors don’t seem so unfounded.

14. The Social Network and Not Saving the Cat

The trailer for David Fincher’s The Social Network was genius. It featured a choir in the background, singing Radiohead’s song “Creep” over images of Facebook, the website. Without the song (and Jesse Eisenberg’s face), I would have groaned. A movie about social networking? Get real. But the trailer did have the song. It did feature Eisenberg (who I’ve loved since Zombieland). Plus, I knew it was directed by David Fincher (who I’ve loved since Fight Club). So what could go wrong?

Evidently, a lot.

I don’t mean to speak badly of the film. The Social Network, as an entity, was irrevocably interesting. It follows the evolution of Harvard sophomore Mark Zuckerberg, as he becomes the founder of Facebook and the youngest billionaire in history. It follows him through a bad breakup, a brilliant idea, lawsuit after lawsuit, and finally, regret over being an a$$hole. The film features those brilliant Fincher camera angles. It features outstanding performances from Eisenberg (who was nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award) and Andrew Garfield (who’s in line to be the next Peter Parker/Spiderman). And like I said, the story is excellent. The dialogue is awe-inspiring.

Jesse Eisengerg as Mark Zuckerberg.

So what’s my beef?

There’s an expression, honed by screenwriter Blake Snyder. It’s known as a “save the cat” moment. Generally speaking, the “save the cat” moment is a moment early on in a movie, where the hero does something noble, making the audience like him and root for him for the rest of the story. It is a vital part of introducing a hero. Arguably, there are no “heroes” in The Social Network. I don’t have a problem with this. My problem is that scene one of The Social Network makes me physically and psychologically disgusted by the character of Mark Zuckerberg, and yet, we are expected to spend the next two hours with the guy. He comes off as egotistical, entitled, and chauvinistic. If I was the girl talking to him in scene one, I would have punched him in the face.

I have a similar complex regarding Evita. Evita, the musical and Madonna film, features beautiful music. However, Eva Peron is a person whose portrayal in the musical/movie offends me. She meant a lot to Argentina, but at her basest, she was a power-hungry, gold-digger. Why does she deserve to be immortalized?

"Best" friends ...?

Zuckerberg does deserve to be immortalized in the same way Bill Gates deserves it. They both made huge strides in the computer/internet world. For that, they deserve respect. However, in the movie, I was distracted by my dislike for Zuckerberg to the point of hoping the movie would be bad enough to turn off so that I wouldn’t have to support the little jerk with my attention. However, the movie wasn’t bad enough; I watched it to the end, but I didn

16. 'The Social Network' & How The Professional Became Personal

In this week of ubiquitous Facebook chatter, it seemed only appropriate to cap things off by addressing the creation myth that's been stirring the pot. And so, last night I caught "The Social Network" with a couple friends at a crowded movie theater... Read the rest of this post

17. What's Your Type?

I just finished watching Zombieland for the first time. I've been wanting to watch it for a while, and when Hollywood video called to wish me happy birthday last week and told me I could have a free rental, I decided to go for it.

While I'm more of a vampire and werewolf fan, I have nothing against zombies. I read and loved Zombie Queen of Newbury High by the lovely Amanda Ashby, The Forest of Hands and Teeth by the lovely Carrie Ryan (by the way, The Dead Tossed Waves is due out March 9!) and my TBR pile just acquired Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I've watched some zombie films too, like Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead (which reportedly was the movie choice for my parents' first date), and a fairly recent one that dealt with zombies and the apocalypse but for the life of me (pun intended) I can't recall its name! Grrr.

Okay, that was quite a birdwalk from what I set out to write about today. What I was going for was a theme about BOYS. And yes, while zombies as subject might be hot, I have yet to see a zombie dude we non-zombie girls drool over.

In Zombieland, Jesse Eisenberg played "Columbus," a non-zombie character reminiscent of the characters Michael Cera usually plays--like in 2 of my favorites, Juno and Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist. You know, kinda dorky, awkward, nervous, quirky, charming, sweet, honest, and kinda-sorta cute if you squint just right. At one point in Zombieland, Columbus asks the little sister (played by Abigail Breslin) of the girl he's crushing on (played by Emma Stone) what her big sister's "type" is. The little sister says, "Bad boy," so Columbus drops their popcorn bowl on the floor (trying to be a "bad boy," if you didn't catch that). Yeah. Doesn't quite work. So, I'm not sure if it's the fact that they're in the midst of an apocalypse and the supply of hot non-zombies is severely depleted, Columbus's personality ultimately wins her over, OR she's flat-out tipsy from Bill Murray's 1996 (if I remember correctly) wine, but (please skip to the next paragraph if you haven't seen it yet and don't want a spolier) our sweet little Columbus gets to first base with his crush. Yay!

Now, that's what I wanted to write about today. What's YOUR type? Do you like the type of guy who goes shopping with you and tells you which sandals to buy? Do you like the guy who is "all business" and has his future AND your future
