Lauren Oliver has signed a deal with HarperCollins Children’s Books. She plans to write a new young adult duology; the first book will be called Replica.

According to EpicReads.com, this science-fiction story follows “a girl named Lyra, known by the number 24, a replica—human model–who was born, raised, and observed in a clandestine research facility called the Haven Institute. When Lyra escapes from Haven and meets Gemma, a stranger on a perilous quest of her own, earth-shattering secrets are revealed.”

Rosemary Brosnan, an editorial director, negotiated the deal with Stephen Barbara, a literary agent at InkWell Management. The publication date has been scheduled for Sept. 2016.

Lauren Oliver announced that The Book of Shhh will be released in May 2016.

This fictional book appears in the Delirium trilogy. Oliver’s young adult series features a dystopian story where love is regarded as a disease.

According to Oliver’s blog post, The Book of Shhh will contain “previously unreleased passages from the prominent religious, social, and scientific compendium of the Delirium world.” HarperTeen will publish it as an eBook and make it available free of charge.

Author Lauren Oliver has written a short story set in the universe of her forthcoming young adult novel, Vanishing Girls.

EpicReads.com has posted part one of the piece which is called “The Search.” Part two will be unveiled on February 9th.

Oyster has established a new agreement with Pottermore.

Subscribers now have access to all seven installments from the Harry Potter series and the three titles from the “Hogwarts Library”. In honor of this occasion, young adult author Lauren Oliver has penned an essay for The Oyster Review on the influence J.K. Rowling has had on her.

Literary agent Stephen Barbara will move from Foundry Literary + Media to InkWell Management.

Barbara devoted six years of his career to Foundry. His start date at InkWell is scheduled for January 05, 2015.

Last week, Lauren Oliver appeared at the “Epic Reads” panel hosted by Books of Wonder.

During the event, Oliver shared the three traits she feels that fiction writers must possess: (1) great self-awareness (2) radical empathy and (3) a deep interest in human beings. Do you agree with her?

Oliver also divulged that her book Panic was inspired by a Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale called “The Boy Who Left Home to Find Out About the Shivers.” Towards the end of the night, she revealed that she has a number of projects in-the-works: a young adult novel entitled Vanishing Girls, a middle grade series called The Curiosity House, and another young adult story featuring clones.

HarperCollins has established a new partnership with JetBlue. Henceforth, the content platform on JetBlue’s Fly-Fi (a special inflight Wi-Fi program) will feature content from HarperCollins books.

For this month, passengers will be able to read excerpts from Patricia Cornwell’s thriller novel Flesh and Blood, Amy Poehler’s memoir Yes Please, and James Dean’s children’s book Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses. Readers will have also have the option to purchase any of the available titles from a plethora of booksellers.

HarperCollins Publishers has launched a new global podcast network called “HarperCollins Presents.”

I was sold on this book by two things: the words “Lauren Oliver” and the idea of ghost POVs. Rooms by Lauren Oliver is a slow, secretive book that intertwines the lives of the dead and the living, and yet its tone is, in turns, contemplative, chilling, and in the end, nearly unbearably sad. If you’ve read the author’s previous young adult or middle grade novels, you probably know that a supernatural book by this author is not going to be your typical ghost story, and it’s a pleasure to find that the author’s first adult novel is sure-footed and clear-eyed. Not all transitions from YA to adult (and vice versa) feel as natural as this, but the author handles adult themes and language and structure with ease. Writer Lauren Oliver has launched the Ghostly Goodreads Challenge in honor of her forthcoming novel, Rooms.

Every time ten bibliophiles add Rooms to their Goodreads shelf, Oliver tweets out a new section of an original ghost story. She will continue writing this ghost story until Ecco releases Rooms on September 23, 2014.

Thus far, Oliver has unleashed more than twenty sections of her story. Readers can follow along with the hashtag #ghostlygoodreads.

Soon it will be time to buy a new calendar for 2014. Earlier in the year, photographer Lauren Zurchin ran a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for a fantasy author-themed calendar project called “Beyond Words: A Year of Daydreams.”

The calendar is now complete and features photos of fourteen authors dressed up as fantasy characters. Each calendar costs $20; the proceeds generated from the sale of these calendars will be donated to First Book and Worldbuilders.

The participating authors include Lauren Oliver as a trapped spirit, Gregory Maguire as a steampunk automaton, Cassandra Clare as Autumn, and Christopher Paolini as Death. Here’s more about Paolini’s photo shoot:

I am posting this because I think all of us should be thinking past having a website, blog, and a facebook page and start thinking about selling our books. This is an excellent discussion guide for Lauren Oliver’s fabulous book, PANDEMONIUM. With this one piece she is showing that she is a true professional, generating interest in reading her book, and providing content for teachers to encourage them to invite her in to their school. Are you putting out something this high end? Next week I will share an excellent middle grade discussion guide and a picture book discussion guide. I hope these will get you thinking about doing more than just putting up a website and hoping someone calls.

The exciting news this week was that I got to host a couple panels regarding Banned Books (it being the week of ‘em and all).  The first was at the Brooklyn Book Festival with David Levithan, Francesca Lia Block, and Lauren Myracle.  I then cannibalized my own questions and used them in this, a Google+ Hangout alongside Lauren Oliver, Lev Grossman, and Lexa Hillyer.  My sole objection: You cannot see my awesome shoes.

And yes.  The Google offices do have free food, copious couches, and massage rooms hither and thither.

Speaking of the Brooklyn Book Festival, I was pleased as punch to see Catherine Jinks speaking there, live and in person.  She mentioned this video which, through utter and total coincidence, I’d seen on my own a couple days before.  Alfred. Is. Perfect.  Look at his fingernails!

And speaking of awesome book trailers . . .

And yeah.  Your book trailer might be awesome.  But did yours ever have a snappy theme song?  I’m just so pleased that our own Gregory K. (he of Gotta Book and The Happy Accident) is debuting his middle grade this year.  Spoiler Alert: It’s good.

And…. okay.  So, maybe I’m a pushover.  Obviously this isn’t my usual video.  But I just sorta liked the feel of this little paper studio and the kiddos who help out.  The narrator I can live without (would that Mimi had narrated the whole thing herself) but I like the kids and I like the product.  So sue.

And for the off-topic video of the day . . . was there any question what I’d go with?  This video works better when you know beforehand that the father is trying to distract his daughter from the “scary” fireworks outside.

I also like the fact that he clearly did her hair that night.
