Hi everybody! This is one of the images I used on my Christmas card this year. It was the outworking of an image I did for Illustration Friday. I can't tell you how many changes this went through to become this, but it was a lot!
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas! Thanks for visiting our IFK site and blog!

Summer is my favorite season, as I enjoy being outdoors as much as I can. The above is my image for our IFK summer promo postcard, which had the summer theme of "beach". I did several prior to this one, finally opting for a looser, devil-may-care style with heavier ink. And I liked the idea of a poodle in a polka-dot bikini, lying on the beach. I was also doing dogs on a beach-scene for my own summer promo, below, so these kind of went together.
Have a good rest of your summer, everybody!

Hi all y’all. I hope you are enjoying spring (those of you who are north of the equator). The trees around here are finally getting around to leafing. Soon enough it will look all springy and then summery and hopefully warmth will follow. I myself have had it with winter. Bah!
The above is the image on the spring promotional postcard mailer that Illustration For Kids (the illustration group I am a part of) recently sent out. The entire front of the mailer (with the all the images) is below. Check out our group blog for more details from the illustrators themselves in regards to our respective illustrations!

A piece for our recent mailer over at Illustration for Kids, with a theme of "Playtime." Its been a while since I voluntarily did human kids for the mailer- anthropomorphic animals are always so much more fun. But I actually enjoyed this one and liked how it turned out.

Enjoying the spring weather as I work on my own book dummy and a piece for our spring promo over at Illustration for Kids:
And a thank you to Lori West at Curledupbooks.com for nice review of The Great Matzoh Hunt.
Thats about it around here. I've been taking a slight break from Facebook and Twitter, and giving myself more time for personal projects. Also I need to start doing some research on my upcoming trip to Tokyo. I can't wait!

Hey all! I’ve been a little slack in posting lately, I know. I’ve been spending quality time away from the computer in general and hope to be getting back into the swing of posting more often. So I’m starting things off with posting images for the postcard promotional that the illustration group I am a [...]

JacketFlap tags: ifk, what inspires you, cartoon, comic, facebook, bird, illustration for kids, paula becker, twitter, Add a tag
Lately, yes, I've been finding my inspiration in the social networking tools Twitter and Facebook. Most of my associations on Twitter are illustrators, authors, designers, etc., so the chit-chat is primarily about what one is working on, what inspires/interests/amuses them, and so on. It's akin to working alone in a studio, but right next to me, a group has gathered, and I can over-hear these conversations. Participate or lurk--whatever--I'm energized (though sometimes over-whelmed!) by the stimuli. Seeing these others in creative-mode makes me want to be creative, too.

Below is my illustration for our IFK fall postcard. I have also included some earlier color versions and rough sketches and ideas working up to the final piece. I obviously decided to use a bear as the main character early on in the process. I changed the color background to blue to add more contrast when there seemed to be a lot of yellows and oranges on the other IFKer's images.

There's been alot of sprucing up lately! Over at Ilustration for Kids, we got an updated logo and look (thanks, Holli!), with images used for our recent fall mailer. We are also at Facebook and twitter. Come follow us!
Our individual profile pages were also updated, with a fun Q & A section. Find out stuff like what kind of animal I want to be (no, its not a chicken) or some of my favorite artists. There is a "real" picture of me, I think I kind of look evil. Should I swap it out with a stock photo of a chicken instead?
A much needed update also went on over at my personal site. Happy to be using my moving monster as my welcome page. Oddly, the colors match exactly with the tabs above. And here I was thinking I've been making an effort in using different color palettes.
Please go visit and let me know what you think. Happy Friday!

A spoonful of creativity a day
Day 13
Another day with very little time to squeeze in anything creative - but, I had promised myself to do something every day, I didn't promise that it would always be pretty :)
I have a piece to paint for our Fall Illustration for Kids promo card which I need to submit by the end of the day tomorrow. (Shouldn't you have started this much earlier Susan? Yes, I should have, but instead left it until the last minute..)
Here are some very rough sketches....I have Little Red Riding Hood on the brain - quite like the idea of her feeding squirrels with the sneaky wolf looking on - but the image has to be approximately three inches square and this might be too busy and detail may get lost..
Keep doodling moles and hedgehogs with oak leaf umbrellas...
As you can see, I don't really have a clear idea of what I am doing yet, but it is all part of the process...
Sometimes things have to get a bit messy before something good can come out of it.

...To Make An Illustration?” That’s the question that Holli, Jenn, Susan, Anette, Jannie, Claire and I are answering this week on our Illustration For Kids (IFK) blog. My post is here.
